Background / History

Gilgamesh first appears during the Fuyuki Holy Grail War period, where Rin openly warns Tokiomi that his compatibility with Gilgamesh is effectively zero: the King of Heroes will not follow a Master's plans, and using Command Spells against him would only make the Master "worthless" 7.

During the war, Gilgamesh battles the King of Conquerors. He confronts Iskandar's army calmly, uses the Gate of Babylon, binds Iskandar with the Chains of Heaven, and finishes him with the Sword of Separation while accepting a future rematch 12.

Against Angra Mainyu's Evil Saintess form, Gilgamesh pursues from Vimana, stops firing Noble Phantasms when civilians are endangered, and resists being controlled by the Black Mud. He declares that a king bears and permits the world, then retaliates with Enuma Elish 13 14. He later assists Rin and Semiramis in defeating Angra Mainyu and keeps his promise to help Rin retrieve the Holy Grail 15.

Rin later summons a Servant clone of Gilgamesh. This version receives memories from his main body, recognizes Rin, and asks her to form a contract with him 42. In Fuyuki's later crisis, he fights beside Rin against the Lion King and the 666 Beast, showing a younger, more careless and ego-driven temperament while still treating Rin more kindly than before 50 60.

In the Uruk era, Gilgamesh rules as the living King of Heroes. He is described as the divine "Key to Heaven" placed between gods and humans, yet he separates humans from gods and contributes to the end of the Age of Gods 136. When Rin arrives in his era, he welcomes her with unusual happiness, and Enkidu notes he has not seen Gilgamesh so happy in a long time 216.

Gilgamesh becomes central to Uruk's defense against the looming Tiamat disaster. He seeks Rin's help, accelerates the North Wall's construction, summons Heroic Spirits, manages refugees, and uses Clairvoyance to observe Tiamat's future—an act that kills him temporarily before he is recovered from the Underworld 263 264 267 268 269.

In the final Tiamat crisis, Gilgamesh accepts that he must hold the line while Rin prepares the Star of Bethlehem ritual. He orders Siduri to preserve Uruk's children for future resurrection, shelters the remaining citizens through Quetzalcoatl, and fights Tiamat for over five hours until he and most allies reach their limits 296 298 300 301.

Gilgamesh is most often presented through regal and combat imagery: seated on thrones, riding Vimana, surrounded by golden ripples, or appearing in full armor amid golden light 13 14 50 290.

Personality

Gilgamesh is arrogant, absolute, and openly contemptuous of most people, frequently calling others "mongrels" or "scum" 7 14 50. He refuses to be treated as a controllable Servant, and Rin warns that forcing him with Command Spells would be fatal for Tokiomi 7.

His kingship is based on total selfhood and burden. He declares that the King "bears," "permits," and "shoulders this world," and Uruk's soldiers draw morale simply from seeing him arrive on the battlefield 14 291.

Despite his harshness, he shows loyalty and concern toward those he accepts. He is protective of Rin, panics over Enkidu's curse, compromises with Ereshkigal for Uruk's citizens, and entrusts Siduri with the future of Uruk 50 219 265 271 296.

In Uruk, he grows more mellow and responsible. Siduri notes that he has been working late into the night, and Ele observes that he is beginning to resemble a wise king rather than his earlier arrogant self 263 265.
