Background

Chen Song overcame the Inner Demon Tribulation, assumed human form, and was accepted by Laozi as the latter's eldest disciple. Jieyin and Zhunti attempted to recruit him to the West, but the Three Pure Ones deterred them; Chen Song then joined his masters on their journey to Purple Heaven Palace. 2

Although Yuanshi repeatedly urged him to cultivate diligently, Chen Song initially preferred wandering, eating snacks, and finding diversions over secluded cultivation. His repeated encounters with stronger enemies—especially Demon Sage Feilian—eventually convinced him to strengthen his alchemy, artifact refinement, formations, evasion, and cultivation. 6 41 43

Appearance

Chen Song's original form is an Innate Five Needles Pine. He can transform into a human form, while his Saintly manifestation carries the phantom of an immense ancient pine behind him. 2 201 206

  • His pine origin grants him an affinity with the Five Elements and vigorous life force. 13 201
  • His human form is small compared with great divine beasts such as Kui Niu. 10
  • His eyes display five-colored radiance when his cultivation is active. 20

Personality

Chen Song is playful, lazy, and prone to theatrical exaggeration. He often flatters his elders, invents elaborate excuses to leave Kunlun Mountain, and treats dangerous situations with irreverent humor. 6 8 23

Behind this unserious exterior, he is observant, persuasive, and highly pragmatic. He repeatedly turns others' pride, desires, or responsibilities into leverage, whether negotiating with the Dragon Clan, persuading the Three Pure Ones, or directing events surrounding the Human Race. 73 92 131

His priorities mature over time. Chen Song takes responsibility for Hongyun's remnant soul, protects human tribes from demonic attacks, guides successive Human Emperors, and ultimately identifies his Dao as protecting those he chooses and settling the karma he bears. 70 82 201
