Background / History

Big White first emerged from a marsh as an enormous, round white beast drawn to the pine nuts in Chen Song's hand. It attacked Kui Niu after coveting the bull as food, but surrendered as soon as it recognized Chen Song's superior strength. Chen Song accepted its loyalty in exchange for food, renamed it “Big White,” and made it follow rules rather than insult Kui Niu. 11

It soon became Chen Song's preferred mount, enlarging itself into a soft, cloud-like form suitable for riding. Its greed for pine nuts, Ginseng Fruits, and other spirit food repeatedly shaped its decisions, including its eagerness to travel to Wuzhuang Temple. 12 14 15

Chen Song later attempted to teach Big White cultivation through the methods of Laozi, Yuanshi, and Tongtian. Its restless temperament proved incompatible with Taiqing meditation and Yuqing discipline, while Tongtian's body-forging method caused its absorbed spiritual energy to lose control. 22

While guiding the early Human Race, Big White loyally followed Chen Song's instructions and helped demonstrate the use of lightning to start a fire. The resulting Human Race faith eventually elevated it into the Guiding Divine Dog, Saint Venerable Qiming. 51 52

Appearance

Big White is a plump, snow-white dog-like beast with a body likened to an immense fluffy rice ball. It can shrink to ordinary dog size or expand into a giant airborne mount. 11 12

It is also highly adaptable and survival-minded. Rather than continue a losing fight against Chen Song, it immediately surrendered; under danger, it can be fearful and complain loudly, but it still carries Chen Song through pursuit, battle, and hazardous locations. 11 38 172

Despite its greed and cowardice, Big White is loyal. It shows concern for Chen Song during Feilian's pursuit, warns Shi Nian against recklessly tasting unknown herbs, and actively guards Fuxi during a staged auspicious event. 38 131 139
