Background
The Primordial World was opened by Pangu and remains bound to his legacy. Mount Buzhou is described as Pangu’s transformed body and a pillar linking heaven and earth, while the Three Purities—born from Pangu’s Primordial Spirit—carry the causal burden and merit connected to the world’s creation. Their continued presence is considered essential to its stability. 13 113
Hongjun gradually merged with the Heavenly Dao to organize the world’s Three Thousand Great Dao Laws through the Creation Jade Plate. His stated purpose was to prevent calamities from again shattering the world, though the resulting system restricts access to deeper Great Dao comprehension. 36 55
Li Er’s arrival and the development of Jie Sect, Daoism, formations, trade, and other new methods repeatedly introduce unfamiliar laws into the Primordial World. Hongjun recognizes these changes as beneficial to the world’s development, but finds that the Creation Jade Plate cannot easily contain or regulate them. 25 36 44
Structure and Cosmology
| Feature | Function and significance |
|---|---|
| Mount Buzhou | A heaven-and-earth pillar and central hub for the world’s laws. Its law circulation ultimately feeds through the Zhou Tian Star Array into the Heavenly Dao; its continued existence obstructs the Earthly Dao’s independent development. 13 140 |
| Sun Star and Taiyin Star | Their sources are fundamental to the world’s balance. The loss of their origins disrupted the laws, while the restoration of the Sun Star restored light and strengthened its original power. 54 71 |
| Primordial Time | Established by the Three Purities after the sun and moon crisis. The system brought a cycle of day and night to all beings and connected the world’s time path to the Great Dao’s River of Time. 54 55 |
| Sea of Blood | Repository of killing intent, baleful aura, filth, and other negative energies. Its continued existence is treated as necessary unless those energies can be safely purified or redirected. 48 87 |
| Nether Valley / ghost world | A region of extreme yin and evil energy containing the dead and ghost gods of the Primordial World; it provides the primordial foundation for the Netherworld. 123 125 |
| Dark side of the Primordial World | A harsh region of inverted, chaotic laws, demonic energy, and strange creatures. Its laws interfere with Primordial Spirits and force even Sages to adapt their cultivation. 113 116 161 |
| Chaos boundary | The world is sealed off from Chaos, making it difficult to locate from outside. Its edge is comparatively weakly monitored by the Heavenly Dao and can be used for transmitting information into Chaos. 82 114 |
Laws and Authority
Primordial World Merit
The Primordial World grants merit to those whose actions advance its development. This differs from Great Dao merit: both aid cultivation and law comprehension, but Great Dao merit is issued directly by the Great Dao, while Primordial World merit is issued by the world itself. 13
- The establishment and teachings of Jie Sect generated merit described as transformation and edification merit from the Primordial World. 13
- The Heavenly Dao witnessed Yuanshi Tianzun’s establishment of the trading market and the Dao of Trade, a new law meant to promote exchange and prosperity. 44
- New laws may strengthen the world, but they also create new interests, powerhouses, and conflicts over limited resources. 36
Heavenly Dao Administration
Hongjun governs the Primordial World through his merger with the Heavenly Dao and his use of the Creation Jade Plate. He can monitor spiritual-energy consumption throughout the world, using abnormal expenditure to infer concealed activity. 36 158
- The Creation Jade Plate records and organizes the world’s laws, but the growing number of new laws repeatedly overwhelms its original framework. 36 44
- The Heavenly Dao recognizes beneficial developments, including new laws and the Human Dao opportunity contemplated for Tongtian. 44
- Hongjun can alter memories through a blue law and used this influence within the Three Realms, affecting both its controller and its cultivators. 158
Earthly Dao and Reincarnation
The emergence of the Earthly Dao threatens the Heavenly Dao’s exclusive authority over the Primordial World. Houtu’s efforts in the Witch God Hall, assisted by Li Er, began the process of opening the Earthly Dao and establishing the Netherworld. 111 125
- Pangu’s Heart within the Witch God Hall connects six chains of law to six gateways, forming the basis for the Six Paths of Reincarnation. 128
- Li Er creates a prototype Netherworld and entrusts its management to Houtu. 128
- The Six Paths require an origin seed of Reincarnation Laws; cultivating them risks immediate detection by the Heavenly Dao. 140
- As reincarnation develops, the heavens begin rising and the Sea of Blood begins sinking, gradually reducing their dependence on Mount Buzhou. 147
Inhabitants and Major Forces
- Three Purities — Pangu’s Primordial Spirit transformations and the designated holders of key Sage positions; their absence risks destabilizing the world’s balance of forces and laws. 113
- Hongjun and the Heavenly Dao — The dominant governing authority, responsible for controlling law circulation and preserving the world against Chaos-borne threats. 36 166
- Witch Race — Occupies Mount Buzhou and possesses Pangu-derived bloodlines and the Witch God Hall. Its physical cultivation tradition initially lacks Primordial Spirits. 12 110
- Demon Race — One of the world’s two foremost races, led by Dijun and Taiyi; its changing fortune and internal development repeatedly diverge from Hongjun’s expected trajectory. 25 46
- Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin races — Formerly dominant forces whose surviving powers may seek a renewed chance at Sagehood. 113
- Chaos Demon Gods and forbidden-zone inhabitants — Ancient, powerful beings connected to Chaos, many of whom remain hidden while awaiting opportunities to return to prominence. 31 55 113
- Innate sacred beings and reclusive immortals — Independent powers scattered across forbidden zones and hidden regions, including Great Immortal Yang Mei. 31 125
Major Changes
Establishment of Primordial Time
After Black Dog consumed the Taiyang and Taiyin sources, the world’s laws fell into chaos. Li Er proposed manifesting a law of time; the Three Purities implemented the plan by using the Taiji Diagram, Pangu Banner, and Immortal Slaughtering Sword Array to establish Primordial Time and restore the sun-and-moon cycle. 54
River of Time Intrusion
The Great Dao of Time formed a River of Time that pierced the Primordial World’s Heavenly Dao barrier. Hongjun was forced to monitor the connection, fearing that cultivators could use it to access the higher Great Dao of Time. 55 90
Opening of the Netherworld
Li Er and Houtu explored the ghost world beneath Nether Valley, where Houtu absorbed the spiritual power of ghost gods. Li Er subsequently created a Netherworld prototype to protect Houtu from Heavenly Dao calculations and to provide a foundation for the Earthly Dao. 123 125 128
Rise of the Three Realms
Li Er used the Valley of the Sun as the seed for the Three Realms, imprinting three thousand foundational laws and allowing factions to contribute laws, divine patterns, and resources. The resulting world develops as a separate, orderly realm and arena for the Witch–Demon conflict and the Investiture of the Gods. 146 147 150
- The Three Realms possesses the Zhou Tian Stars, Thirty-Six Heavenly Stars Formation, Seventy-Two Earthly Fiends Formation, Reincarnation Formation, Blood God Formation, and Thirty-Six Heavens. 146
- Its growing law structure is supported by contributions from the Demon Race, Witch Race, Dragon Race, Phoenix Clan, Qilin Clan, Human Race, reclusive innate beings, and reincarnated Chaos Demon Gods. 148
- By the later stages, the Primordial World’s laws are described as being converted through the Three Realms, whose spatial and law structure can withstand unrestricted combat without ordinary karmic consequences. 168
