Background / History

Yuanshi Tianzun is one of the Three Purities alongside the Grand Pure Saint and Sect Master Tongtian. He initially worries that Tongtian's impulsive nature and vast recruitment of disciples will bring trouble, yet repeatedly assists his younger brother when needed. Tongtian specifically seeks him out as a formations specialist to establish Jie Sect's Trial of Heart and Heaven's Pride Ranking. 8

His relationship with Tongtian is marked by rivalry, exasperation, and loyalty. Yuanshi envies the closeness between Tongtian and the Grand Pure Saint, competes for their elder brother's favor with innate treasures, and becomes furious after Tongtian repeatedly evades him with layered formation disks. 5 21 Nonetheless, he stands beside Tongtian against Zhunti and later helps the Three Purities establish the rotation of Primordial time. 29 54

After meeting Li Er as “Second Brother Pan,” Yuanshi becomes increasingly involved with Daoism. He recognizes that Jie Sect's new rules and systems originate from Li Er, accepts Li Er's plans for a market, and establishes a trading market on Mount Buzhou under his own protection. 38 41 44

Yuanshi later uses the Pangu Banner, Taiji Diagram, and Chaos Bell to form the Axe of Creation and restore the Sun Star's original power. His apparent self-destruction becomes the basis for widespread faith, which he identifies as Thought Power; a clone later continues the spectacle to build demand for the Chaos Bell. 71 72

His incarnation, Yuanshi Tianming, becomes entangled in the Heavenly Dao's authority. Yuanshi grants Tianming the Mark of the Heavenly Dao, and the Three Purities subsequently pass their Sage positions to him, alarming Hongjun. 109 111 112

After crossing a bronze passage with the Grand Pure Saint and Tongtian, Yuanshi is stranded in a hostile world whose reversed laws severely restrict their powers. He remains with his brothers on the dark side of the Primordial World, fighting strange creatures and searching for a way back. 114 123 124

Personality

Yuanshi is technically minded, competitive, and highly conscious of order. He approaches new ideas by examining their practical value, as shown by his immediate interest in the purpose and structure of Li Er's proposed trading market. 41

He can be proud and quick-tempered, particularly when Tongtian's deceptions or formations make him look incompetent. His obsession with Tongtian's formation-disk stacking method drives him to demand answers from Lingbao Tianzun after repeated failures to break the disks. 21

Despite his complaints, he is protective of his brothers and allies. He supports Tongtian in major confrontations, assists in stabilizing Primordial time, and takes combat responsibility while the group flees the strange creatures of the dark world. 29 54 165
