Background / History

Xuanwei accidentally enters Tongtian's Biyou Palace after passing through a spatial channel. Tongtian examines the unusual wisp of innate immortal qi and initially offers him work tending medicinal gardens and sweeping courtyards. 9

When the Jade Pure Primordial Lord of Heaven calls Xuanwei unworthy of creation and urges his destruction, Tongtian gives Xuanwei an opportunity to argue for his own value. Impressed by Xuanwei's belief that every being should have a chance to seize “the one that escapes,” Tongtian accepts him as a nominal disciple and grants him the introductory chapter of the Supreme Pure Immortal Method. 10

Tongtian repeatedly protects Xuanwei from the Primordial Lord of Heaven's pressure, arguing that the Intercepting Sect exists to preserve a sliver of opportunity for all beings. 14 He later personally tempers Xuanwei's Chaos Bead fragment with Heaven-Severing Sword Intent, improving the treasure rather than destroying it. 25

After Xuanwei protects Golden Ao Island against a peak Golden Immortal's attack, Tongtian brings him to Biyou Palace to recover. He then formally accepts Xuanwei as a personal disciple, records him in the Supreme Pure Treasure Register, grants him an Origin Imprint, and bestows a replica of the Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner. 39

As the Great Tribulation approaches and the Western Teachings take notice of Xuanwei, Tongtian explicitly promises his protection and grants him three months in the Supreme Pure Dao Comprehension Pool to strengthen his foundation. 45

Personality

Tongtian is casual, playful, and unconventional even when dealing with Saint-level matters. He treats Xuanwei's debate with the Primordial Lord of Heaven as both a test and an amusing spectacle, but sincerely values Xuanwei's intelligence, persistence, and desire to defy limiting origins. 10
