Background / History

Ereshkigal was feared in the Human World as the embodiment of death and was poorly regarded even among the gods. Unlike other gods, she had neither worshippers nor admirers; her long isolation in the Underworld left her longing for companionship while fearing rejection. 25 41

After Rovi told Ishtar that he admired Ereshkigal, the sisters' dormant spiritual connection returned. Ereshkigal descended through Ishtar's possession only to glimpse the mortal who admired her, initially hiding herself behind darkness and the cold winds of the Underworld. 24 25

Rovi entered the Underworld despite its deathly erosion, prompting Ereshkigal to reveal herself after Ishtar urged her to stop hesitating. Moved by his apparent willingness to face death to meet her, she accepted the key he made for her—a two-way key to the Human World—and granted him protection against death's erosion. She marked him as the one she loved. 26 27

She later left the Underworld temporarily to walk with Rovi in the mortal realm, despite the distortions her absence could cause in both worlds. After receiving the gratitude and faith of people Rovi had saved, she began to see herself not merely as a lonely goddess of death, but as someone who could bring comfort to the departed. 41 42

When the Bull of Heaven threatened Uruk, Ereshkigal openly defied the Mesopotamian gods. Drawing strength from the souls sheltered in her realm, she raised the mountains of the Underworld and trapped the Bull, ignoring Anu and Ishtar's objections. 49

During Tiamat's appearance, Ereshkigal attempted to attack the primordial goddess but was repelled into the Norse lands. There, she became connected to the Shadow Country and Scathach, eventually reuniting with Rovi after nearly two thousand years apart. 67 150 151

Unable to endure waiting in the Primordial Highest Heaven, Ereshkigal descended to the East Sea in search of Rovi. She accelerated the birth of the Stone Monkey, unintentionally giving the new being a possessive nature, then adopted the identity offered by the Stone Monkey: the Goddess of Mount Li. 184 185

At Mount Li, Ereshkigal merged with the land and manifested a Netherworld beneath it. Her existence was retroactively woven into the Divine Land's history under the name Ai, and she became associated with Qin's Heavenly Might through her position as the Goddess of Mount Li. 189 190

Appearance

Ereshkigal is a beautiful goddess whose appearance closely resembles Ishtar's due to their shared origin, though her demeanor is markedly gentler. Her initial descent was an indistinct shadow concealed by darkness, while later manifestations are fully physical. 25 27

Personality

Ereshkigal is gentle, shy, and easily moved by sincere affection. Having spent ages alone among the dead, she is deeply sensitive to the possibility that others may fear or reject her. Her contact with departed souls has made her unusually close to humanity in outlook, despite being a goddess. 25 41

She often tries to sound imposing as the cruel embodiment of death, but her embarrassment is readily exposed when teased. She is affectionate toward Rovi, worries intensely about his condition, and repeatedly tries to protect him while disguising her concern as a goddess's obligation. 27 62

Despite her insecurity, Ereshkigal can be resolute. When Rovi is threatened, she defies other gods, acts on her own convictions, and refuses to be used by the pantheon that neglected her for millennia. 49
