Background / History

Gilgamesh ruled Uruk as an overwhelmingly powerful but arbitrary king, treating the city-state as his personal property and exercising authority over his subjects' lives and possessions. Although he openly disdained the gods, he still attended the Festival of All Gods because of his connection to his divine mother, Rimat-Ninsun. 3 11

At the festival, the priest Rovi publicly denounced Gilgamesh's tyranny and divine claim to rule. Rather than executing him, Gilgamesh elevated Rovi to the position of royal aide, finding his defiance entertaining and potentially useful. 3 4 6

Gilgamesh subsequently granted Rovi access to the Treasury of Babylon and came to recognize him as a person worthy of standing beside him. When Rovi vanished in the Monster Forest, Gilgamesh used Clairvoyance to search for him, assumed the gods were responsible, and confronted Enkidu after finding her in Rovi's place. 10 18 38

After Rovi prevented his battle with Enkidu from reaching its conclusion, Gilgamesh gradually accepted both of them as companions. The three coordinated Uruk's response to the gods' punishment, spread warnings across the Mesopotamian Plain, formed an alliance of city-states, and prepared Uruk for war. 29 32 34

During the invasion of demonic beasts, the Bull of Heaven, and Humbaba, Gilgamesh became a stabilizing leader rather than merely a tyrant. He unified the plains nations, constructed the Great Wall of Uruk, rallied the population, and fought the Bull of Heaven while Rovi and Enkidu carried out their own parts of the plan against the Heavenly Realm. 44 46 48 50

After Rovi was taken by Tiamat and Enkidu departed to search for him, Gilgamesh left Uruk in search of the Elixir of Immortality. He ultimately discarded it, returned with a deeper understanding of his friends' influence on him, and resolved to lead Uruk to its greatest era while awaiting their return. 68

Gilgamesh later led Uruk into the Underworld, where he became its non-divine king and continued expanding his domain. He reunited with Rovi in the Greek Underworld, where the two resumed their familiar friendship and planned to return Uruk to the mortal realm. 109 115 117

Gilgamesh is a tall, heavily built young man whose appearance is repeatedly compared to that of a sculpted divine figure. He presents himself with conspicuous gold, crimson, and royal imagery. 2 18 109

Gilgamesh is intensely self-centered, proud, and verbally abusive, routinely calling others “mongrels,” “scum,” or stray dogs. He considers the world and everything within it to be his domain, and he reacts harshly to challenges against his authority. 2 3 44 253

Despite his tyranny, he is neither incompetent nor indifferent to Uruk. He refuses to permit outside forces to harm his kingdom, can make sound strategic decisions, and becomes increasingly willing to shoulder responsibility for his people. 11 31 38 44

He has a strong tendency to express care through insults, punishment, or grandiose declarations rather than direct affection. His concern for Rovi, Enkidu, and Siduri becomes increasingly apparent, even as he continues to speak with arrogance. 18 28 38 68
