Background / History
Leadership and succession
Xu Chunxing grew up under the watch of Tree Elder and Vine Elder, the ancient soul beasts living in the sect’s forbidden Back Mountain. By the time he brought Xu Mingguang and Xu Mingxi to meet them, Vine Elder remarked that his strength had surpassed theirs 4.
He raised his grandson Xu Mingguang as his successor, teaching him to place the Star Crown Sect’s interests first. Mingguang’s talent and acceptance among the elders initially made his succession appear unassailable 1 39.
The awakening of two children with Innate Full Soul Power changed the sect’s prospects. Xu Chunxing ordered those present to keep the results secret. When Xu Mingxi subsequently obtained Star Calling—the first soul skill of the Level 98 Star Ancestor—he arranged to nurture Mingxi covertly while formally appointing Mingguang as Young Sect Master 2 3.
Nurturing Xu Mingxi
Xu Chunxing personally taught Mingxi the sect’s exclusive Soul Power Guidance Chart. Mingxi’s immediate mastery and extraordinary absorption of starlight led him to recognize the Near Star Physique described in the Star Ancestor’s notes. He then secured the elders’ agreement to introduce both boys to the forbidden grounds 4.
He built the boys a wooden house beneath the Starry Tree and personally delivered their meals. Concerned that unsuitable soul rings might repeat the Star Ancestor’s mistakes, he extensively researched Mingxi’s options rather than simply following the sect’s established control-type templates 5 6.
Although reluctant to let Mingxi leave, he supported his education at Canghui Academy and entrusted his protection to the Second Elder. Later, he obtained permission from Tree Elder and Vine Elder to admit Star Crown soul masters at Soul Saint or above to their cultivation grounds. The resulting environment helped him reach Level 96 and enabled numerous sect members to overcome bottlenecks 7 21.
After Mingxi survived three years of training in the Star Dou Great Forest, Xu Chunxing and the First Elder collected him, treated his exhaustion, and brought him home. He subsequently presided over Mingxi’s appointment as Young Sect Master and began inviting his opinions on the sect’s future 37 39.
Emergence into continental politics
Xu Chunxing personally accompanied Mingxi’s seventh soul ring hunt and helped him obtain a Hundred-Thousand-Year Fire Thief Lizard for his eighth ring. During the Sun Flame Crow hunt, he identified an error in the intelligence: the beast was already over seventy thousand years old, prompting him to question whether Mingxi could withstand its ring 48 50 57.
He accepted Emperor Dai Feng’s proposal to destroy the Black Tiger Sect after weighing the reward and political risks with Mingxi. He departed with two elders and Mingguang, seeking to avoid losses among ordinary disciples. The operation publicly revealed the existence of the Star Crown Sect’s Titled Douluo and earned the sect resources and a thirty-thousand-year soul bone 54.
He later refused Bibi Dong’s invitation to re-establish the Upper Three Sects under Spirit Hall. As Spirit Hall intensified its pressure on rival factions, he initially sent indirect aid to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. After Sixth Elder Fang Chun was gravely injured in an ambush, he retrieved him and withdrew from continental affairs 70 78.
Passing practical authority to Mingxi
Qian Daoliu’s warning against interference left Xu Chunxing unable to openly assist friendly sects. He could offer protection only to those willing to relocate within Starfall Mountain’s boundaries. Mingxi’s return from overseas relieved this pressure: the sect now possessed eight Titled Douluo, and Xu Chunxing authorized him to handle its affairs as he saw fit 99 102.
Although Mingxi increasingly controlled the sect’s direction, Xu Chunxing continued handling administration and diplomacy. He helped receive Ning Fengzhi, offered cooperation against Spirit Hall, and participated in negotiations that brought the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect under the Star Crown Sect’s banner through access to advanced Soul Tools 112 118 140 143 144.
He stood beside Mingxi when Qian Daoliu personally visited Starfall Mountain, joining a confrontation involving ten Star Crown Sect Titled Douluo. Later, he supported the operation against Bo Saixi and represented the sect before White Tiger Duke Dai Hao, declaring that its Titled Douluo would participate in a war to annihilate the Spirit Hall Empire 174 195 210.
Appearance
- Graying hair: His hair becomes increasingly gray as he worries about continental instability and the time needed for the younger generation to mature 3.
- Dark circles: Develops slight dark circles while searching through books for suitable second soul rings for Mingxi 5.
Personality
Xu Chunxing is protective without treating cultivation as a reason to deny children ordinary lives. He allows Mingxi to return home on weekends, advocates balancing work and rest, and wants him to maintain relationships within the sect. His concern extends to personally providing housing and meals for the two young prodigies 5.
His leadership is cautious and pragmatic. Even after the Third Elder is seriously injured by Clear Sky Sect members, he insists on weighing gains and losses rather than retaliating emotionally. He similarly evaluates the Black Tiger Sect operation through its rewards, responsibility, and likely consequences 54 57.
He takes pride in the sect’s unity and feels accountable to its ancestors. That responsibility becomes increasingly burdensome with age, but Mingxi’s return restores his confidence. His willingness to ask the younger man for strategic opinions develops into a readiness to entrust him with practical control 5 39 99 102.
