Background

The Three Pure Ones originated from Pangu's Primordial Spirit and Innate Pure Qi. Before taking form, they were concealed within East Kunlun's main peak behind a Primordial Great Array structured around the Three Powers and capable of evolving Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind. Their sanctuary contained continuously born and destroyed Great Thousand Worlds, as well as the Mysterious Yellow Pagoda. 44 45

Their Qi and destiny were originally inseparable: assisting one in assuming human form required assisting all three simultaneously. Lu Ya found them through Mysterious Yellow Mother Qi and used the power of the Sun Star to help them take human form. The assistance established considerable causality but also a lasting affinity between them. 44 45

After learning that the Primordial Era already contained many Grand Unity experts and Quasi-Sages, the Three Pure Ones chose seclusion over immediate travel. They exchanged Dao insights with Lu Ya, revealing fragments of Pangu's Nine Revolutions Primordial Technique and receiving the God-Demon Body Refinement technique in return. 45

Appearance

After assuming human form, each Pure One manifested as a distinct Daoist:

  • Taishang / Taiqing — An old man with white hair, a youthful complexion, kind eyes, and a benevolent smile. The Mysterious Yellow Pagoda hangs above him. 45
  • Yuanshi / Yuqing — A majestic middle-aged man; his manifestation is accompanied by divine light, auspicious qi, raining heavenly flowers, and golden lotuses emerging from the earth. 45
  • Tongtian / Shangqing — A young man with sharp eyebrows and bright eyes. 45

Personality

Although united by origin, the three possess distinct temperaments and pursuits. Taishang is the most composed and tends toward alchemy; Yuanshi is proud, ambitious, and devoted to artifact refinement; Tongtian excels at formations and displays a competitive, forceful temperament. 169 241

They share intense pride in being Pangu's orthodox lineage. This pride initially led them to reject Hongjun's offer of discipleship, though the revelation that Pangu had likely resurrected convinced them to accept him as their master. 191 192

Their unity weakens over time. Yuanshi's plundering of Primordial Origin and pursuit of an otherworldly realm drive Taishang and Tongtian to oppose him, creating the first open conflict among the three since the creation of Heaven and Earth. 282

Abilities & Skills

Pangu Lineage and Combined Origin

The Three Pure Ones can combine their origin power due to their shared foundation in Pangu's Primordial Spirit.

  • Their unified Qi allows them to coordinate attacks and divine-sense communication almost instantaneously. 44 91
  • Connecting their origins lets them manifest Pangu's power and enabled Yuanshi to bring Taishang and Tongtian into Golden Crow World No. 1. 318
  • The connection carries severe risk: injury or death to one affects all three. 318
  • Their origins and Pangu's Creation Merit make them highly favored by the Heavenly Dao. 191 230

Chaos Restriction

A Pangu-inherited sealing technique also known as the Pangu Seal.

  • The three use essence blood and origin power as a medium to invoke Pangu's Primordial Spirit power and form chaotic matter around a target. 91
  • They used it to seal Lei Ze for several hundred Epochs. 91
  • The technique severely injures all three when used at their earlier cultivation, requiring thousands of years of recovery. 91
  • Its full potential requires Pangu bloodline or a cultivated Pangu True Body; at Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortal level with Pangu blood essence, it could potentially seal the Primordial Heavenly Dao. 91

Three Pure Immortal Lights and Divine Lightning

Each Pure One commands an immortal light aligned with his own lineage: Taiqing, Yuqing, or Shangqing.

  • The lights can protect the body, granting resistance to laws and evil influences. 91
  • They can transform the lights into Taiqing, Yuqing, and Shangqing Divine Lightning. 91
  • At peak Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortal level, the three divine lightnings can merge into a superior combined lightning that surpasses All-Heavenly Divine Lightning. 350

Cultivation Arts and Dao Specialties

  • Taishang — Uses the Taiqing Immortal Method and specializes in alchemy, including the refinement of Seven Revolutions Golden Pills. 45 169 191
  • Yuanshi — Uses the Yuqing Immortal Method and is the most skilled artifact refiner among the three. 45 241 270
  • Tongtian — Uses the Shangqing Immortal Method and specializes in array formations. 45 169
  • Their methods originated from their incomplete fragments of the Nine Revolutions Primordial Technique, which can only be perfected by reconciling their differing ninth-revolution versions with Pangu's version. 45 334

Formation Techniques

  • Innate Three Talents Three Origins Array — Used to combine their Magic Power and infiltrate the Sun Star's origin with Heavenly Dao divine talismans. 248
  • Innate Three Powers Array — Used with the Three Creation Treasures in their attempt to seal Panhu. 276
  • Immortal Slaying Sword Formation — Operated by Tongtian to threaten even Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortals with Chaos Sword Qi. 291
  • Two Forms Micro Dust Great Array — Taishang's protective formation around Shouyang Mountain, capable of transforming a minute space into a Primordial Universe. 211 233

Three Pure Ones Manifested from a Single Breath

Taishang's secret divine ability creates three manifestations of Taiqing, Yuqing, and Shangqing from pure qi.

  • The manifestations outwardly possess Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortal auras but are actually Quasi-Sage-level avatars. 291
  • They can deceive even Sage-level perception at first glance. 291
  • Maintaining the three manifestations consumes substantial Magic Power and cannot be sustained for long in Hunyuan-level combat. 291

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Mysterious Yellow Pagoda — Taishang's First Acquired Merit Supreme Treasure; immune to laws and evil influences, with defensive power comparable to the Chaos Bell. 45
  • Eight Sceneries Palace Lamp — Taishang's lamp-type treasure, used during the sealing of Lei Ze. 91
  • Crooked Staff — Taishang's Dao-Proving Treasure. 291
  • Glazed Lamp — Yuanshi's Heaven Divine Lamp, containing the Myriad Spirits Ancient Flame. 91
  • Three Treasures Jade Ruyi — Yuanshi's Supreme Innate Spiritual Treasure. 275
  • Myriad Heavens' Auspicious Cloud — Yuanshi's defensive treasure; it protected him from Jieyin's full-force Vajra Pestle strike. 249
  • Twenty-seven Mountain River Pearls — Tongtian's pearls, used to form an array during the battle against Lei Ze. 91
  • Purple Lightning Hammer — Seized by Tongtian after Lei Ze's sealing, though it retained Lei Ze's Primordial Spirit imprint. 91
  • Green Ping Sword — Tongtian's Supreme Innate Spiritual Treasure and Dao-bearing weapon. 275
  • Pangu Banner, Taiji Diagram, and Eastern Emperor Bell — The Three Creation Treasures used to form an incomplete Pangu Axe; the Eastern Emperor Bell could not be fully refined because of Donghuang Taiyi's imprint. 276

Relationships

  • Lu Ya — Friend and benefactor who helped all three assume human form, exchanged cultivation knowledge with them, and later received their support against Lei Ze. 45 91
  • Hongjun — Their master and the founder of the Mystic Gate. He accepted Taishang as first disciple, Yuanshi as second, and Tongtian as third after revealing Pangu's probable resurrection. 192
  • Panhu — Regarded by them as Pangu or an entity closely tied to Pangu. Their hostility culminated in multiple attempts to seal or defeat him, all of which failed. 275 276 291
  • Nuwa — A fellow Sage. She considered aiding their attempt to seal Panhu and later discussed the Dao with Tongtian, aiding her breakthrough. 275 325
  • Jieyin and Subhuti — Rival Sages of the Western Teachings. They fought when the Three Pure Ones attempted to use the Sun Star against the Great Sun Tathagata. 249
  • East King Duke — A Mystic Gate affiliate whose attempts to gain their support were met with coldness and indifference. 233
  • Fuxi, Candle Dragon, and Minghe — Opponents during the Three Pure Ones' invasion of Golden Crow World No. 1. 318

Story Role / Major Arcs

Assumption of Human Form

Lu Ya located the Three Pure Ones within East Kunlun's protected sanctuary and helped them transform. They learned of the Primordial Era's current powers, exchanged Dao methods with Lu Ya, and withdrew into seclusion to strengthen themselves. 44 45

Seal of Lei Ze

The Three Pure Ones intervened in Lu Ya's centuries-long battle with Lei Ze. Combining their treasures, immortal lights, and inherited Chaos Restriction, they sealed Lei Ze at the cost of serious injury. 91

Hongjun's Disciples

They initially refused to become Hongjun's disciples due to their Pangu lineage. After Hongjun disclosed the possibility of Pangu's resurrection and explained the Hunyuan path, Taishang accepted him as master, followed by Yuanshi and Tongtian. 191 192

Establishment of the Three Teachings

Taishang founded Human Teaching and opened Lihen Heaven; Tongtian founded the Jie Sect and opened Yuyutian; Yuanshi founded the Chan Sect and opened Yuqing Heaven. Their actions completed the thirty-six layers of the Heavenly Realm. 230

Separation and Independent Dojos

The Three Pure Ones eventually parted ways. Taishang established himself at Shouyang Mountain, Yuanshi remained at Kunlun Mountain, and Tongtian founded his dojo on Golden Ao Island. 233

Conflict with Panhu

Believing Panhu to be Pangu, they attempted to ambush and suppress him in the Chaos. They activated the Three Creation Treasures to form an incomplete Pangu Axe, but Panhu seized control of it and used it against them, forcing their retreat. 275 276

Internal Strife

Yuanshi's plundering of Primordial Origin to cultivate an otherworldly realm caused Taishang and Tongtian to turn against him. Their clash exposed the breakdown of the unity that had once defined them. 282

Invasion of Golden Crow World No. 1

Yuanshi used the Three Pure Ones' linked origins to bring Taishang and Tongtian into Golden Crow World No. 1. There, they fought Fuxi, Candle Dragon, and Minghe in a three-against-three battle. 318

Later Breakthroughs and Relinquishing Sagehood

All three advanced to late-stage Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortal, later reaching the peak realm. When Taishang chose to abandon his Sage position, Yuanshi and Tongtian followed; their connected energies eased the process. 325 350 351
