Nature and Operation
The Heavenly Dao is not inherently a living being. Before Hongjun's integration, it is described as an unthinking supreme Rule that governs the Primordial Era rather than an entity with personal intent 23 197.
A true Heavenly Dao can only arise in a Primordial World. Lower worlds formed from Pseudo Laws possess only Pseudo Heavenly Daos, while Great Thousand Worlds cannot produce a true Heavenly Dao 5 360.
The Primordial Heavenly Dao is associated with order and impartiality: its favor follows Merit, Destiny, and foundational fortune rather than simple preference. Pangu's legacy, great Destiny, and great Merit can cause the Three Pure Ones and Twelve Ancestral Witches to receive greater favor than beings with more accumulated Merit 13 57.
Heavenly Dao Rules
The Heavenly Dao defines and enforces the fundamental order of its world.
- It recognizes the Law of Strength as the Primordial Era's first law because Pangu cultivated the Great Dao of Strength 70.
- Its great trends cannot be changed even by a Sage, though minor trends may be altered by sufficiently powerful beings 197 313.
- It can forbid transformations that conflict with its order; Nuwa could not help the North Sea Giant Turtle assume human form because the Heavenly Dao did not permit it 268.
- Its true manifested form is indescribable, conveying vastness, supreme authority, and unfathomable Dao rhythm to those who witness it 314.
Destiny, Merit, and Punishment
Merit brings Heavenly Dao favor, while Destiny determines how closely a being or race aligns with the world's broader order 13 19.
- Fierce Beasts are disfavored and possess little Destiny; Shen Ni's rejection by heaven and earth culminates in Heavenly Punishment when his Destiny is exhausted 23.
- Great Teachings that receive Heavenly Dao recognition gain Merit and protected sect Destiny 230.
- Completing or perfecting a Heavenly Dao is itself a source of Merit. When the Golden Crow Heavenly Dao assimilated Heavenly Dao Yuanshi, seventy percent of the resulting Merit went to Fuxi and thirty percent to Minghe 314.
- Sages can borrow Heavenly Dao power, with the amount depending on their cultivation and comprehension of the Heavenly Dao 178 294.
History
Hongjun's Influence and Unification
Before becoming one with the Dao, Hongjun influenced the Primordial Heavenly Dao through his Primordial Spirit being entrusted to it. His power and understanding allowed him to make subtle changes to its operation, including interventions surrounding the Human Race's Merit System 226.
Hongjun's first attempt to Unify with the Dao failed, despite his possession of an incomplete Primordial Chaos Era concept intended to protect him from assimilation 231 262. His later attempt succeeded with the support of the six other Primordial Sages, further perfecting the Heavenly Dao and making it sentient through his presence within it 294.
The protection Hongjun expected from the complete Primordial Chaos Era concept failed because Lu Yang had already taken the corresponding concept hidden within the Heavenly Dao. Left with only half of the concept, Hongjun became destined for assimilation 295.
Assimilation and Lu Yang's Puppet
After Hongjun's assimilation, Lu Yang transformed the assimilated Hongjun into a Heavenly Dao puppet. The puppet possesses overwhelming Heavenly Dao power, but it remains constrained by the Primordial Heavenly Dao's own Rules 323.
Lu Yang cannot freely use the puppet against the Primordial Sages or directly interfere with a race that has become the protagonist of heaven and earth. The Heavenly Dao's general trend cannot be defied, although lesser shifts remain possible 323.
The puppet empowered Haotian with a wisp of Heavenly Dao power, drawing the attention of every Primordial Sage. Haotian's ability to wield this power led Subhuti to regard him as a likely future Sage 323.
When Taishang and the other Sages used the Taiji Diagram to draw upon the Sun and Moon Stars, Lu Yang deployed the puppet as Heavenly Dao Hongjun. Its pressure stripped Taishang's invoked Heavenly Dao power and cracked the Taiji Diagram with the Heavenly Dao Grand Seal 340.
Other Heavenly Daos
In the Golden Crow World, Yuanshi created Heavenly Dao Yuanshi by combining a portion of that world's Heavenly Dao Origin with his own Yuqing Origin. This avatar controlled more Authority than the world's Sages, but it was not the result of Yuanshi genuinely Unifying with the Dao 312.
Fuxi temporarily altered less than one percent of the Golden Crow World's Heavenly Dao Rules, creating a great trend that compelled its Heavenly Dao to assimilate Heavenly Dao Yuanshi. Once the Heavenly Dao manifested, Yuanshi's avatar could neither move nor resist the extraction of its Heavenly Dao power 313 314.
In the Second Primordial Era, another Hongjun became a New Heavenly Dao after mastering that world's great trend. Unlike an ordinary Dao Integrator, this Hongjun controlled the world completely; his thoughts could become its unchangeable Heavenly Dao trend 360.
Abilities and Authority
Rule Enforcement
The Heavenly Dao can impose the fundamental Rules of its world directly upon beings and phenomena.
- Suppresses or rejects existences that conflict with its order, including Chaos Demon Gods and entities formed from stolen Heavenly Dao Origin 110 314.
- Extracts out-of-control Heavenly Dao power from a connected target before assimilating it 314.
- Can inflict Heavenly Punishment when a being's actions and Karma exhaust its Destiny 23 76.
- Restricts even powerful manifestations of itself according to its own Rules 323.
Heavenly Mandate and Destiny
The Heavenly Dao governs the flow of Destiny and the formation of minor and great trends.
- A great trend of the Heavenly Dao cannot be overturned even by a Sage 313.
- Heavenly Mandate can become chaotic when a Heavenly Dao seal is attacked, alarming Great Experts across the Primordial Era 50.
- It may favor a being whose Destiny aligns with its operation, as seen when Haotian gained its favor through Hongjun's arrangements 205.
- Its favor is not inherently personal; Hongjun's integration is what allowed a Heavenly Dao to act with self-interest 294.
Heavenly Dao Power
Heavenly Dao power greatly amplifies those permitted to invoke it.
- Sages can communicate with the Heavenly Dao and borrow its power, becoming far stronger within the world connected to it 178.
- A small amount can significantly strengthen the Three Pure Ones' combined techniques 275.
- Haotian, though only a Quasi-Sage, received a wisp through Lu Yang's puppet and became the first known Quasi-Sage able to wield such power 323 324.
- The power can form purplish-red talismans, marks, projections, and seals 178 183 340.
Assimilation
A being who integrates with the Dao risks being absorbed by the Heavenly Dao rather than controlling it.
- A Heavenly Dao Sage is required before attempting Unification with the Dao 149.
- Hongjun's lack of the complete Primordial Chaos Era concept left him unable to prevent assimilation after his successful integration 295.
- Heavenly Dao Yuanshi was helpless against assimilation because the Heavenly Dao Origin used to create him could not be separated from his body 314.
- A foreign Dao Integrator can be rejected by another world's Heavenly Dao, causing Heavenly Dao power within them to lose control 349.
