Background / History

Andrew was initially a timid, insecure student who habitually carried a camera. He attended a party with Gu Qing, Steve Montgomery, and Matt Garrety, then reluctantly joined their exploration of a mysterious underground cave. Faced with the unknown, Andrew repeatedly wanted to retreat, but followed the others into the cave. Exposure to its crystal granted him Telekinesis. 3 4

Before gaining powers, Andrew lived under the abuse of his father, Richard, a retired firefighter who drank heavily and beat him. His mother, Karen, was seriously ill and lacked the medicine she needed. The combination of domestic abuse, poverty, bullying, and alienation left Andrew fearful, withdrawn, and distrustful of others. 10

Gu Qing taught Andrew and the others how Telekinesis could develop into Current Propulsion. Andrew advanced unusually quickly, driven by intense emotions and a desire to escape his former weakness. His talent-show success and new physical strength briefly gave him confidence, popularity, and a sense that power could grant him everything he wanted. 6 8 10

After accidentally causing a driver’s death, Andrew resisted Matt’s rules against using powers on living beings. His confrontation with Richard further broke down his fear of his father, but also pushed him toward violence. When Matt appealed to morality and restraint, Andrew instead adopted the belief that the strong should rule as “Top Predators.” 7 8 10 11

Andrew began using his powers against those he saw as weak or beneath him: he forced school bully Shawn to brutally beat himself, robbed and killed punks for money, and massacred armored-cash-truck guards. His original goal was to obtain medicine for Karen, but his actions increasingly became expressions of power, resentment, and contempt for ordinary people. 13 15 16

Following Karen’s death and his conflict with the FBI, Andrew devastated Seattle and fought Steve and Matt. Personality

Andrew begins as anxious, timid, and deeply insecure. He is uncomfortable with danger, struggles to assert himself, and feels safer around Gu Qing because Gu Qing is younger and smaller than he is. 4

His camera reflects his emotional distance from the world. Andrew sees himself as an outsider who records others rather than participating with them; even his friendships with Matt and Steve do not fully overcome this wariness. 13

Power transforms Andrew’s self-image. His confidence initially manifests in standing up to Richard and enjoying attention at school, but it becomes tied to the belief that strength alone determines worth. He dismisses laws, morality, and restraint as tools of the weak, eventually viewing ordinary people as “vermin” and himself as a superior being. 10 11 15

Despite his brutality, Andrew remains strongly attached to Karen.
