Background

Clark was born on Krypton. Before the planet's destruction, his biological father placed him aboard a spacecraft and sent him to Earth. His arrival was accompanied by a Kryptonite meteor shower, scattering a mineral that weakens him while mutating and mentally destabilizing exposed humans. Jonathan and Martha Kent found the ship on their farm and adopted him. 158 164

As a young child, Clark defended the Kents when Habakuk Stanny invaded their farm. His strength surfaced openly, but Habakuk's Kryptonite necklace left him weak enough to be captured. After escaping, Clark was pursued through the forest; Habakuk and his men cornered him after Jonathan and Martha's deaths. 156 158 159

Gu Qing offered Clark a choice between being saved and becoming strong. Clark chose strength, awakening heat vision and killing Habakuk's group. Gu Qing and Diana subsequently adopted him, rebuilt the Kent home, and remained in Smallville as his new parents. 159
