Nathaniel Essex was a wealthy, ruthless figure obsessed with discovering En Sabah Nur—Apocalypse—whom he believed might have been both a god to ancient Egyptians and the world's first mutant. He identified mutant abilities as products of the X-Factor and led Daisy Aisha, Quake, and Nullifier to Egypt in search of Apocalypse's resting place. 112

Using information extracted from local villagers, Essex located a buried pyramid complex. Quake detected a person beneath the ruins, allowing the group to uncover Apocalypse's sleeping body. Essex ordered Nullifier to suppress Apocalypse and personally extracted a blood sample before the site collapsed. After escaping, he ordered every worker at the excavation eliminated and all evidence sealed. 112 113

Essex used the stolen blood to pursue his real objective: replacing his own genes with those of the strongest mutant and becoming a god. Despite Daisy's concerns over the experiment's low success rate, he entered the conversion chamber. The procedure succeeded, drastically strengthening his body and leaving a diamond-shaped mark on his forehead. 114

By the time Apocalypse emerged openly, Essex had become his Black Knight, one of the Four Horsemen. He was later among the mutants erased by Gu Qing's reality-altering act. 278 279
