Background / History
Upbringing on Themyscira
Diana is the daughter of Amazonian Queen Hippolyta and Zeus. Hippolyta conceals her identity as the true God-Slaying Weapon and discourages her from learning combat, hoping to protect her from Ares. Antiope secretly trains Diana from childhood, enabling her to become a capable warrior despite her mother’s objections 99 102 104.
Raised entirely on Themyscira, Diana has never seen a man before meeting Gu Qing. She initially approaches him with fascination, then becomes wary because of his unexplained arrival and ability to fly. Unlike Hippolyta, she argues that he does not appear hostile 98 99.
Training and the Campaign Against Ares
Gu Qing tells Diana about World War I and the suffering outside Themyscira. Convinced that Ares is responsible, she insists that stopping him is an Amazonian duty. Hippolyta initially refuses to let her leave 100.
A German invasion exposes the Amazonians’ vulnerability to modern weapons. Gu Qing saves them and offers to teach them Ultimate Immeasurable Qi Gong. Diana advances rapidly, but discovers that her divine power blocks entry into Magnetic Field Rotation 101 102 104.
Once Gu Qing identifies Ares as Sir Patrick Morgan, Diana prepares to confront him. Hippolyta finally reveals that Diana herself—not the sword in the tower—is the true God-Slaying Weapon. Diana leaves with Gu Qing for London in 1918 104 105.
While Gu Qing fights Ares, Diana works with MI6 to destroy General Ludendorff’s poison-gas operation. Mustard gas cannot harm her, and she kills Ludendorff even after he uses Human Enhancement Gas. She and the agents destroy the production lines and gas supplies, then capture Doctor Poison. Their success deprives Ares of part of his growing power 108 109.
Gu Qing ultimately kills Ares before Diana can fulfill her intended role. Back on Themyscira, she learns that his death does not permanently end war. She plans to enter human society to oppose the conditions that could nourish his return; Gu Qing supports her goal but urges her to strengthen herself first 109 110.
Love, Separation, and Life as Wonder Woman
Diana falls in love with Gu Qing but initially withdraws after learning that he will leave her world. She eventually chooses to pursue him rather than deny her feelings. They begin a relationship, and he promises to return 111.
During their separation, Diana protects humanity as Wonder Woman and searches for Ares from World War II onward without finding him. She uses monitors at home to locate crimes and rescue innocent people. Her opponents provide little challenge, leaving her without the pressure needed to resolve the conflict between her divine power and Magnetic Field Rotation 150 151.
By 1984, she works at the Natural History Museum as Diana Prince. She befriends Barbara Minerva and admits that she has been waiting for her absent partner. Gu Qing returns after sixty-five years in her world, although only three years have passed for him. Diana greets him with an angry punch before embracing and kissing him 148 149 167.
The Wishing Crystal
Diana’s wish on the Wishing Crystal is connected to Gu Qing’s return, but it gradually drains both her divine power and Current Propulsion. She and Gu Qing take the crystal to Themyscira, where Hippolyta identifies its power as belonging to the God of Lies. Diana relinquishes her wish; Gu Qing leaves and reenters the world, reassuring her that she has not lost him again 151 153.
Barbara’s wish to become like Diana grants her strength, electrical abilities, and increased confidence at the cost of her kindness. When Barbara later tracks Diana down, Diana explains the crystal’s deception and urges her to renounce the wish. Barbara refuses, and the two fight. Diana holds back because of their former friendship and remains saddened by Barbara’s decision 149 172.
Family Life with Clark
Diana accompanies Gu Qing to Kansas to find Superman. They subsequently raise the adopted Clark Kent in Smallville, where she puts away her weapons and embraces life as a housewife and mother. She repeatedly asks Gu Qing to spend more time with Clark and objects to placing excessive expectations on the child 154 161.
When Clark struggles with revelations about his identity, Diana comforts him by explaining that she, too, is not fully human. She encourages him to regard himself as an individual rather than define himself by his origins 164.
Regular sparring with Gu Qing restores her enjoyment of combat. Their close bond also helps him develop Hell War God, whose first materialized personality is modeled on his understanding of Diana 162 169.
Death and Resurrection
Diana prevents Clark from killing Bruce Wayne after his conflict with Lex Luthor. By investigating Bruce’s actions as Gotham’s protector, she helps Clark recognize him as a fellow hero 283.
After Granny Goodness infiltrates Themyscira and steals Ultimate Immeasurable Qi Gong, Darkseid learns the technique, massacres the island, and takes its Mother Box. Diana returns alone to avenge her people and is defeated. She later fights alongside Clark and the Justice League against Darkseid and the mysterious reinforcements aiding him 283 284.
When Darkseid gains the Anti-Life Equation and controls Clark, Diana attempts to save her son. His Omega Beams shatter her soul, although her body survives. Gu Qing subsequently discovers her dead body at the Justice League base 282 283 284.
Gu Qing uses the Time Stone to restore life to her body, but she remains unresponsive because her soul is missing. After mastering the Soul Stone’s power, he returns to the DC world, gathers her scattered soul fragments, and revives her fully 285 288 289 290.
Diana forgives his late arrival after learning what he did to save her. Her immediate concern is Clark: she attempts to join his battle in space, stopping only when Gu Qing assures her that he is safe enough to use the fight as training 290.
Appearance
Diana is tall, lean, and athletic, with a vigorous, wild beauty and notably long legs. Her civilian clothing includes a navy-blue women’s suit at the museum and a green floral dress during family life in Smallville 98 148 161.
- Battle attire: Armor accompanied by her sword, shield, lasso, and silver bracers 105 151.
- Electrical manifestation: Lightning surrounds her during powerful attacks; she can become a brilliant lightning-like figure while accelerating through the air 150 152.
Personality
Diana’s early curiosity reflects her sheltered upbringing. She readily questions Gu Qing about men, other worlds, and human society, while her belief in humanity’s goodness contrasts with Hippolyta’s distrust. Learning about civilian suffering quickly turns that curiosity into a determination to act 99 100.
Her compassion extends to strangers and friends alike. She helps Barbara when others ignore her, protects her from harassment, and later tries to save her from the Wishing Crystal’s consequences. Even during their fight, Diana restrains herself out of affection for her former friend 148 149 172.
She is direct about love once she overcomes her fear of separation. Decades in human society make her more reserved and conscious of loss as friends age or die, but she remains devoted to Gu Qing. With Clark, she is protective and nurturing, frequently tempering Gu Qing’s demanding approach to parenthood 111 149 161 164.

- Aegis Shield — One of the divine artifacts she carries when leaving Themyscira 105.
- Guardian Silver Bracers — Crafted by Hephaestus from fragments of Zeus’s Aegis Shield. They defend against arrows and bullets and release protective divine power when struck together 105.

Notable Quotes
“Stopping the God of War is our mission. As Amazonians, it is our duty!” 100
“Amazonians should not choose to run away when facing difficulties. If I denied my own heart, I would only suffer even more. So I chose to leave no regrets.” 111
“Clark, you don’t need to think of yourself as special. Just like Qing said, you are simply yourself.” 164
Trivia
- “War God Diana” is not Diana herself. It is a materialized personality created by Gu Qing’s Hell War God, based on his understanding of her. Its appearance is monochrome, and it can fight alongside him and grow stronger 162 169.
- Human society changes her experience of time. Although Amazonians are long-lived, watching human friends grow old or die makes Diana feel the decades of separation far more keenly than the warriors who remain on Themyscira 149 152.
