Background / History

Cole commands a Taotie warship assigned to the Thousand-Year War Plan. He maintains discipline aboard the vessel despite low morale, repeated losses among Taotie teams, and equipment supplied by Dead Song Academy that is thousands of years outdated. 4 7

When the warship detects the critically wounded Yuan as the source of dangerous radiation and gravitational distortions, Cole recognizes the value of the Divine River Body and orders the crew to retrieve and treat him. He then commits the Stellar Furnace's energy—and later energy siphoned from a nearby star—to Yuan's transformation, accepting catastrophic strain on the ship to keep him alive. 7 8 9

After Yuan awakens as a god, Cole formally ends his status as a prisoner and leads the Taotie in saluting him. He provides Yuan with commander-grade battle armor, a neural interface, and access to the warship's databases. 10 11 14

Cole explains that his Taotie branch believes itself to be descended from hidden backup gene primordials, concealing its original genes beneath mechanical shells and cognitive filters while attempting to evade Karl's control. Yuan's assertion that Karl has always known of their resistance destroys Cole's long-held convictions, causing him to lose control before he ultimately accepts Yuan's offer of companionship and change. 15

He later offers to transfer command of the Taotie unit to Yuan, admitting that he no longer knows how to lead his people safely. While he continues organizing the warship's repairs and carrying out Yuan's orders, his frustration over Yuan's rapid learning, suspicion of Yuan's actions, and concealed God-Slaying Spear create increasing tension. 16 19 20 21

Cole opposes Yuan's refusal to visit Dobilun Star, believing the Super Seminary's legacy could save the Taotie years of effort. Yuan strips him of command authority and has him confined after concluding that his desperation may have been manipulated. 29

During Fenrir's attack, Cole escapes captivity, steals a God-Slaying Spear, and activates it with his own blood. He deliberately allows Fenrir to impale him so he can immobilize the Beast God and create an opening for the warship's weapons. 42 43

Personality

Cole is a demanding and outspoken commander who reacts harshly to incompetence, poor equipment, and insubordination. His temper is volatile, particularly when fear, humiliation, or frustration over his own limitations overwhelm him. 7 20 23

Despite this aggression, he is deeply invested in the Taotie's future. He risks the warship to save Yuan, seeks Yuan's guidance after confronting Karl's possible manipulation, and ultimately sacrifices himself against Fenrir rather than allow the battle to be lost. 9 15 16 43
