Background / History
Bruis served as Commander Cole's adjutant aboard the damaged Taotie warship. During the repairs, he handled material requests and logistics, though Cole frequently berated him over the dark-energy detector that the crew nicknamed a “cup” and Bruis's use of the VR room 17 20.
He proved more perceptive than Cole assumed. When tension mounted between Cole and Yuan over failed Dark Matter simulations, Bruis interrupted them by reporting the discovery of ultra-pure Vanadium Crystal, deliberately defusing the confrontation 20. Under Yuan's direction, he assembled the Light Particle Capture System and accelerator, then learned to operate the resulting supercomputer despite initially doubting that an ordinary science officer could manage it 21 22.
After the warship was repaired, Bruis openly argued that the Taotie should abandon Death God Karl's path and follow Yuan as a source of hope. Cole struck him during their dispute, but Bruis refused to yield and won the support of the surrounding soldiers 23. Yuan later took Bruis and Cole with him when the warship departed the Styx Galaxy for the Tiannü Galaxy 24.
When Cole attempted to force the ship toward Dobilun Star, Bruis helped restrain him and had him confined in the Black Prison. He later surrendered the God-Slaying Spear's activation key to Yuan after learning how much Yuan already knew about Cole's hidden weapon 29 30. During the Great Worm Bridge crisis, Bruis rallied the Taotie behind Yuan and remained at his side when they were diverted to Dobilun Star 31 32.
On Dobilun Star, Bruis oversaw supply transfers, excavation, and the clearing of the palace-supercomputer complex. He also assisted Yuan's covert preparations when Yuan passed him a modified neural interface and instructed him to move supplies away from the laboratory 33 35 37 38.
Following Karl's appearance and Fenrir's awakening, Bruis commanded the Taotie defense using the central system's real-time combat analysis. He volunteered to wield the God-Slaying Spear to immobilize Fenrir for the warship's main cannon, accepting that the task was likely fatal. He was severely injured before Yuan destroyed Fenrir 41 44. After the battle, he helped recover the fallen and accepted Yuan's decision to rename the surviving Taotie as the Holy Spirit Clan 46 48.
Personality
Bruis is practical, observant, and unusually willing to reassess his loyalties. He recognizes Yuan's intelligence and restraint, values the chance to learn, and believes the Taotie need hope rather than blind obedience to Karl 20 22 23.
Despite his fear of Karl and other god-level beings, Bruis can be direct when the future of his people is at stake. He admits the Taotie's ambition before Karl and later remains steadfast in defending Yuan against Fenrir 39 40 42.
He is also burdened by logistics and resource management. His reluctance to abandon the Vanadium Crystal mine stemmed from concern over depleted supplies and the technical difficulty of extracting the ore safely, rather than simple disobedience 20.
Abilities & Skills
Technical Operations
Bruis is a trained Taotie science officer capable of handling warship systems, material logistics, and advanced construction under guidance.
- Delivered Yuan's requested materials and managed supply requirements for the warship repairs 17 20.
- Assembled the Light Particle Capture System and accelerator from Yuan's blueprints 21.
- Learned to operate the accelerator and assisted in installing the supercomputer's light-particle core 21 22.
- Led the transfer of supplies and preparation of a replacement warship plan on Dobilun Star 33.
- Coordinated excavation and clearing work around the palace complex and experimental base 35 37.
Command and Battlefield Tactics
Bruis became a capable field commander once Yuan placed him in charge of the Taotie defense.
- Subdued Cole when he attempted to defy Yuan's orders and arranged his confinement 29.
- Rallied the Taotie to remain with Yuan during the unstable Great Worm Bridge transit 31.
- Commanded squads against Fenrir, assigning assault, mobile-support, sniper, and medical roles 41 42.
- Used the central system's combat analysis to track Fenrir's movement patterns, weaknesses, and attack routes 41.
- Volunteered to use the God-Slaying Spear to create an opening for the warship's main cannon 42.
Political Judgment
Bruis understands the Taotie's desperation and ultimately chooses a future under Yuan over their former service to Karl.
- Challenged Cole's continued loyalty to the Taotie Civilization and argued that the crew had become living individuals rather than tools for engineered death 23.
- Recognized that Cole's increasingly irrational actions may have been the result of outside manipulation 29 30.
- Confessed the Taotie's desire for strength and exposure to god-making civilizations directly to Karl 40.
- Accepted the abandonment of the Taotie identity and the creation of the Holy Spirit Clan 48.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Taotie battle armor and tactical visor — Used for protection, system access, and battlefield coordination 23 41.
- Neural interface — Received a modified interface from Yuan containing instructions for covert supply preparations 38.
- God-Slaying Spear activation key — Handed to Yuan after revealing its existence and its connection to the central system's computational support 30.
- God-Slaying Spear — Volunteered to wield it against Fenrir, though Cole ultimately activated and used another spear himself 42 43.
Relationships
- Yuan — Commander and chosen leader. Yuan values Bruis's intelligence and scientific aptitude, while Bruis becomes fiercely loyal to him and supports his plans for the Taotie's future 20 23 31.
- Cole — Former commander and superior. Their ideological conflict over Karl, Yuan, and the Taotie's future escalates into a physical confrontation; Bruis later imprisons Cole on Yuan's orders 23 29.
- Death God Karl — Former supreme god of the Taotie. Bruis fears Karl but still declares the Taotie's ambition to progress beyond the limits Karl imposed on them 39 40.
- Holy Spirit Clan — Bruis is among the surviving Taotie who accept Yuan's renaming of their people and pledge themselves to spreading his glory 48.
