Appearance
Igneel is a massive red-scaled dragon distinguished by a scarred face and dark horns. 45
- Red scales covering his body.
- A red horn on his upper jaw.
- A scar over his left eye.
- Two horns at the back of his head, densely covered in black scales. 45
Personality
Igneel is impulsive, competitive, and easily motivated by food, wine, or the prospect of surpassing Metalicana. Sordil exploits this rivalry to recruit him for the search for a Lightning Dragon. 131
Despite his carefree habits and occasional gullibility, Igneel keeps his promises. He endures an uncomfortable search through Polson Grand Canyon rather than abandon his vow, then seeks help when he realizes he cannot succeed alone. 140 153 He is deeply loyal to Sordil, considers him a brother, and reacts with overwhelming grief when told of Sordil's supposed death. 341
Igneel can be unexpectedly considerate: he repeatedly apologizes after accidentally tripping Anna and is distressed by her crying. 45 In battle, however, he is direct and destructive, preferring action over verbal sparring. 193
Abilities & Skills
Fire Dragon Physiology
As the Fire Dragon King, Igneel possesses immense physical durability, flight capability, and fire-based combat power.
- Endures impacts, falls, and combat injuries that would incapacitate lesser dragons. 65 343
- Flies long distances and carries Sordil's group to the highest peak of the Dil'dixiu Mountain Range. 47
- Uses his body, claws, fists, and dragon scales in close-quarters combat. 193 343
- Can consume food and wine in extraordinary quantities; he is especially fond of fine wine. 155 158
Fire Magic
Igneel wields large-scale fire attacks powerful enough to reshape terrain.
- Blazing Strike — Fires a massive, round blaze; one strike turns a mountain comparable to Mount Everest into a vast crater. 193
- Blazing Flame — Launches an orange-yellow fireball to intercept incoming attacks. 343
- Dragon Breath — Releases fiery breath attacks, though opponents capable of copying or nullifying magic can counter it. 342
- Crushing Fist — A powerful physical strike used against Natsu in his black-dragon form. 343
Combat Judgment
Although often portrayed as carefree outside battle, Igneel demonstrates practical battlefield awareness.
- Moves away from Sordil's berserk combat zone rather than interfere with an unpredictable fight. 191
- Pursues King Dragon Selisliu relentlessly while coordinating with Sordil. 193 194
- Holds back his power during the pursuit to avoid harming Sordil. 194
- Leads Ishgar's dragons in defending their encampment against a probing enemy assault. 204

- Anna — Initially frightened by Igneel after he accidentally trips her; he repeatedly apologizes and later treats her amicably. 45 46
- Metalicana — Long-standing friend and rival. Igneel is jealous of Metalicana's perceived competence but eventually accepts his help in finding the Lightning Dragon. 131 144
- Grandiere — Fellow dragon and frequent companion. She recognizes Igneel's positive qualities despite his carefree lifestyle. 130
- Vyseria — Ally in the Lightning Dragon search; Igneel promises him wine in exchange for assistance. 147 155

- Acnologia — Opponent whose overwhelming strength forces Igneel's group into repeated retreats. 344 347
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Sordil and Anna
Anna encounters Igneel in the jungle during a Truth or Dare dare. Igneel accidentally trips her, then desperately apologizes until she forgives him. 45 After an initially tense meeting with Sordil's group, he welcomes them, shares a meal with them, and later brings them to meet the Last Five Dragon Group. 46 47
Search for the Lightning Dragon
Sordil assigns Igneel the task of locating a Lightning Dragon for a magic experiment. Igneel accepts after being provoked with comparisons to Metalicana. 131 His solitary search fails, leaving him without food, wine, or comfort in Polson Grand Canyon. 140
Igneel ultimately recruits Metalicana, Vyseria, and Scylladrum through a mixture of half-truths and manipulation. 144 147 The group captures the Lightning Dragon despite its escape attempt, allowing Igneel to fulfill his promise to Sordil. 153
Sordil's Magic Experiment
After delivering the Lightning Dragon, Igneel receives barrels of wine from Sordil as compensation. 155 He then serves as a test subject for Sordil's transformation experiment, allowing Sordil to take a wisp of his magic and soul power without reducing Igneel's strength. 156
War Against the Western Continent Dragons
Igneel joins the defense of Ishgar against invading Western Continent dragons. He assists Sordil in tracking enemy remnants and pursues King Dragon Selisliu with overwhelming firepower. 192 193 Though Selisliu escapes their immediate assault, Igneel and Sordil later discover that Glaide killed him to seize intelligence. 195 196
Igneel later commands Ishgar's dragons during an attack on their encampment, maintaining his position at Sordil's telepathic instruction. 204
Search for Zeref and Conflict with Acnologia
Igneel joins Sordil's allies in searching Ishgar for Zeref Dragionil. 298 300 When he encounters Zeref, their confrontation escalates after Zeref accuses him of deserting Sordil; the revelation of Sordil's alleged death leaves Igneel grief-stricken and enraged. 341
Despite this beginning, Igneel accepts Sordil's request to bring Zeref safely to Mildian. He protects Zeref against Natsu's black-dragon form, destroys Natsu's Seed of the Demon, and fights alongside Zeref against Acnologia. 343 344 He eventually agrees to evacuate with Natsu when Zeref remains behind to delay Acnologia. 345
