Background / History
Service under the Second Hokage
Danzō belonged to the Shimura Clan, described as an obscure small ninja clan. He served in Tobirama Senju’s guard alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi, Torifu Akimichi, Kagami Uchiha, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura. Torifu repeatedly beat him during their younger years; Danzō could match neither his background nor his strength 69.
Danzō had an opportunity to become Hokage when the Second Hokage died but failed to seize it. That missed opportunity remained an enduring source of regret and fueled his determination to prove himself. After Hiruzen became Hokage and failed to recruit Kagami and Torifu into his administration, Danzō, Koharu, and Homura joined him in the leadership group known as the Konoha F4 69 182 197.
Root and the campaign against Kazuna
As Root’s leader, Danzō presented the eradication of threats as the organization’s duty to protect Konohagakure. He treated the Uchiha as such a threat and sought to eliminate Kazuna. An early confrontation cost him six operatives: one Jonin, two Special Jonin, and three Elite Chunin 13 16.
Danzō subsequently ordered a Yamanaka subordinate to destroy Katō Fūko’s mind during interrogation, sacrificing a sensory Jonin to obtain information quickly. The interrogation appeared to confirm cooperation between the Hyuga and Uchiha, prompting him to propose action against both clans 20.
He then ordered Itachi to lure Kazuna outside the village and kill him with Root’s assistance. Itachi disclosed the order to Kazuna, who deliberately entered the trap. The resulting Forest of Death operation killed fourteen selected Root Jonin, including Danzō’s prized insect-user, Aburame Shikuroo 22 26 33.
Recruitment demands and dismissal
With Root depleted, Danzō demanded personnel from several clans. His requests threatened to strip the Yamanaka of much of their younger and working-age membership and even included Aburame clan leader Shibi. Ino-Shika-Cho, the Aburame, and the Inuzuka jointly refused his demands 41 42 43.
Rather than retreat, Danzō proposed suppressing the resisting clans. Hiruzen rejected the proposal and stripped him of all duties, ordering him to remain at home and reflect. Koharu and Homura took over Root’s reorganization, although Danzō retained his freedom 44 56.
Attack on Shisui
Danzō later proposed using Itachi and Shisui against Kazuna. Hiruzen assigned his son and Anbu commander, Shin’ichirō Sarutobi, to accompany him as both an aide and a means of supervision 63.
Danzō nevertheless ambushed Shisui with Anbu and Root operatives, attempting to seize his Sharingan. He used Izanagi during the encounter, and Shisui was left severely injured. Kazuna subsequently confronted Danzō’s remaining team, forcing him to retreat while Ryoma Aburame covered his escape 71 72 73 74.
The incident deepened Hiruzen’s distrust. When Danzō later demanded custody of Itachi for another anti-Uchiha plan, Hiruzen refused and explicitly forbade further attacks 82.
Accusations, foreign contacts, and the final ambush
Danzō’s reputation made his denials increasingly ineffective. Accused of assassinating Sunagakure’s Kage through an impersonated Uchiha, he was ordered to surrender every Sharingan. Later, Kazuna accused him of arranging an assassination through rogue ninja; Torifu ordered him to the Western Front with Hiruzen 128 149.
Although Danzō denied the latter accusation, his subsequent conversation with Obito—posing as Madara—confirmed that they had been planning Kazuna’s assassination. They concluded that Kazuna had guessed and baited Danzō into exposing himself, but resolved to continue the operation 150.
As his faction weakened, Danzō revealed connections to Kirigakure’s plan to attack Konohagakure and eliminate the Uchiha. He also acted as Hiruzen’s emissary, offering Kazuna 100 million ryo to join the fighting; Kazuna initially refused 171 176.
After the Kirigakure war, Danzō launched an open attack on Kazuna and the Uchiha elites. He intended to force Hiruzen into supporting him by committing their remaining forces before retreat became possible. Exposing his implanted Sharingan and Hashirama Cells instead provoked outrage, and even Sarutobi and Shimura ninja withdrew from his immediate confrontation with Kazuna 181 182.
Exile and later battles
Danzō escaped after being severely wounded while joining Orochimaru against Kazuna. He spent a year treating his injuries, finding replacement Sharingan, and gathering subordinates before contacting Orochimaru again. Learning that Kazuna had become Fifth Hokage drove him into a rage; he sought Orochimaru’s help to reclaim a village he considered rightfully his 197.
Their alliance remained transactional. Danzō needed restoration and military support, while Orochimaru valued him as experimental material. Even after four years of Kazuna’s rule, Danzō still believed he could become Hokage 197 220 223.
During the wider conflict, the opposing Kage suspected Danzō of leaking information after Konohagakure defeated Iwagakure. Excluded from their discussion, he declared his intention to rebuild Konohagakure after its destruction; Orochimaru refused to participate in that plan 244.
Danzō later fought Kazuna alongside other Kage-level opponents but retreated after repeated lethal blows forced him to use Izanagi. Against the revived Minato, he used the same technique to survive an otherwise fatal exchange and briefly gain an advantage. Minato subsequently suppressed him, Hiruzen, and Ōnoki together 314 335 336.
By his last documented appearance, Danzō and Hiruzen were severely injured and at Kazuna’s mercy. Both expressed remorse and asked to die, but Kazuna used medical ninjutsu to keep them alive 358.
Appearance
- Single visible eye: Early descriptions emphasize his lone eye; his right eye is wrapped in bandages 13 71.
- Bandaged arm: Shisui detects numerous sources of familiar chakra beneath its wrappings 71.
- Modified body: Once unsealed, his arm displays implanted Sharingan, while his deathly pale skin and surging life force expose his Hashirama Cell modifications 182 183.
- Cane: Frequently approaches or departs while leaning on a cane, whose tapping Shisui immediately recognizes 33 43 71.
Personality
Danzō justifies extreme measures as service to Konohagakure. He dismisses the loss of a Jonin as worthwhile for faster intelligence and condemns clans that refuse Root’s recruitment demands as selfish and lacking a ninja’s spirit of sacrifice. His hostility toward the Uchiha extends beyond Kazuna to a desire to destroy the entire clan 20 24 43.
His ambition increasingly becomes possessiveness: he considers Konohagakure his destined inheritance and believes he can surpass every previous Hokage. Suspicion makes him question allies and intelligence, yet repeated failures do not diminish his confidence in the next operation. He privately fears Kazuna but responds by escalating his plans rather than abandoning them 24 33 104 160.
Abilities & Skills
Izanagi
- Rewrites reality to negate lethal damage and reappear unharmed, including after being crushed by Kazuna or struck during Minato’s battle 182 314 335.
- Uses the Sharingan implanted in his arm as expendable resources; one eye closes each time he vanishes during Kazuna’s repeated attacks 183.
- Is substantially less effective against informed opponents. Kazuna records Danzō’s fighting method and shares it with the Uchiha clan before their open confrontation 182 335.
Sharingan and Hashirama Cell Modifications
- Combines Uchiha and Senju power through implanted eyes and Hashirama Cells 160 182.
- Gains a dramatic increase in combat power when releasing his seals 335.
- Requires a balance between the two powers. Exhausting his Sharingan allows the Hashirama Cells to rampage and nearly consume him 197 223.
- Replacement two-tomoe eyes initially restrain the cells only enough to preserve his life, necessitating Orochimaru’s intervention 223.
Wind Release and Close-Range Movement
- Uses Wind Release: Great Breakthrough during Shisui’s ambush; its air blade drives Shisui backward despite his chakra-enhanced weapon 71.
- Approaches Shisui without making a sound and later rushes him at close range to reach for his eyes 71.
Intelligence Operations and Command
- Directs Root’s assassinations, surveillance, recruitment, and interrogations 20 22 26 41.
- Uses specialist subordinates, including Yamanaka memory-readers and Aburame insect-users 20 33 74.
- Manipulates public opinion against the Uchiha and attempts to disguise failed Root operations as attacks by foreign spies 38 40.
- Commands heavily conditioned operatives, but Kazuna repeatedly exploits his assumptions and drains Root’s strength through prepared counterattacks 26 33.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Fellow disciple, political partner, and rival for the Hokage position. Their cooperation deteriorates as Danzō’s operations damage Hiruzen’s faction and authority 69 74 171.
- Uchiha Kazuna — Principal enemy and repeated assassination target. Kazuna destroys his operatives, exposes his modifications, and ultimately keeps him alive against his wishes 22 33 182 358.
- Uchiha Shisui — Intended pawn and Sharingan target. Danzō’s ambush leaves Shisui severely injured and provokes a public challenge to the Hokage’s leadership 63 71 73.
- Uchiha Itachi — Prospective operative against Kazuna and the Uchiha. Itachi reveals Danzō’s initial assassination order to Kazuna, while Danzō continues trying to obtain control over him 22 82 171.
- Torifu Akimichi — Former fellow guard and longstanding antagonist. Torifu physically assaults him, protects Ino-Shika-Cho from his demands, and later uses Acting Hokage authority to constrain him 69 70 149.
- Orochimaru — Uneasy ally and experimental surgeon. Danzō seeks help reclaiming Konohagakure, while Orochimaru treats his combined bloodline powers as valuable research material 197 223.
- Obito Uchiha — Co-conspirator operating under the name Madara. They plan Kazuna’s assassination and recommit after realizing Kazuna has baited them 150.
- Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura — Fellow F4 members who support action against the Uchiha but increasingly distrust Danzō’s judgment. They take over Root after his dismissal 26 56 82.
Notable Quotes
“Hiruzen, everything I did was for Konohagakure!” 44
“Uchiha Shisui, your Sharingan is mine!” 71
“I want to reclaim what is rightfully mine! Konohagakure absolutely cannot fall into Uchiha hands.” 197
Trivia
- Kazuna calls Danzō the “Pot Kage” because he believes Danzō repeatedly takes the blame for Hiruzen’s actions. The nickname expresses Kazuna’s interpretation, not a Hokage appointment 86.
- Danzō’s highest documented village office is Hokage Assistant. Despite his recurring ambitions, the supplied passages do not establish that he ever becomes Hokage 197.
- Kakashi’s investigation attributes the public-opinion campaign against Sakumo Hatake to Danzō; Kazuna argues that Hiruzen deliberately allowed it 86.
