History

During the early war against Sunagakure, Iwagakure cooperated with Kusagakure to ambush Rasa's force. An Iwa Jonin commander identified Rasa as the Third Kazekage's disciple and intended to test his strength while investigating Sunagakure's condition following the Kazekage's disappearance 5.

The disappearance of Hato's vanguard and Rasa led Kitsuchi to suspect that Rasa had defeated the Iwa force. Rather than immediately intervene when Rasa attacked Kusagakure, Kitsuchi ordered his men to record and assess Rasa's unexplained techniques, treating Kusagakure's losses as useful intelligence 11 13.

Iwagakure's neglect of Kusagakure contributed to the collapse of their temporary alliance. While Sunagakure repeatedly targeted Kusa ninja, Iwagakure ignored Kusagakure's requests for aid and continued to call for joint operations, which Kusagakure refused 21.

As the wider Great Shinobi War escalated, Iwagakure shifted its focus toward Kumogakure and Konoha. It later threatened Sunagakure with a full-scale border war unless Sunagakure joined its attack on the Land of Fire; the two villages subsequently launched a surprise attack on Konoha together 26 47 49. After Sunagakure concluded the Kikyo Mountain Treaty with Konoha, Iwagakure withdrew its ninja from the Land of Wind border in accordance with its agreement with Sunagakure 51.

Following the treaty, Onoki mobilized 30,000 ninja against the Third Raikage's invading force. The three-day battle inflicted heavy losses on Iwagakure and ended with the Third Raikage's death 51.

Governance and Military

• Onoki, the Third Tsuchikage — Prioritizes Iwagakure's long-term interests over immediate profit and remains wary of resources or agreements whose value Iwagakure does not understand 187.

Iwagakure supplied Sunagakure with an otherwise unremarkable ore in exchange for trade benefits. Onoki became suspicious when Sunagakure repeatedly requested it instead of conventional resources, ordering the Research Department to determine its use and considering restrictions on future sales 187.

The trade substantially increased Iwagakure's income, enabling the village to recruit more children and expand its future ninja force. Iwagakure's leadership nevertheless remained prepared to seize the resource by force if Sunagakure's eventual use of it threatened Iwa interests 187.

Rock Cuisine and Manufactured Goods

At the Leaf Village Summit, Onoki and Rasa agreed to a business partnership for Rock Cuisine: Iwagakure retained a 55% stake, while Sunagakure received 45% 294.
