Background / History
Childhood in the Azure Brilliance Realm
Xiang Yang was born in 3100 as the second grandson of the Xiang Manor’s lord in Liancheng, Mo Kingdom. His father, Xiang Cheng, later inherited both the manor lordship and the position of Liancheng’s City Lord. 267
In 3105, bandits attacked the convoy carrying Xiang Yang and his mother, Shangguan Qingwan. Yun Shou secretly saved the guards and mother and son, then arranged for Shangguan Qingwan to feign death so Xiang Yang would grow up believing her sacrifice had saved him. The five-year-old Xiang Yang vowed to become “the sun” after awakening beside her supposed corpse. 268
The loss became the foundation of his drive. He rapidly mastered writing and martial knowledge, then rejected conventional martial arts because they could not literally make him into the sun. Yun Shou encouraged him to forge a path of his own and began mentoring him as both teacher and friend. 269
Pure Yang Art and reunion with his mother
Xiang Yang created the Pure Yang Art in 3111. Its initial heat source tempered his body automatically; later stages were designed to grow it into a larger heat source and eventually transform it into his own power. 269
Yun Shou revealed Shangguan Qingwan’s survival in 3112–3113. Xiang Yang initially resented the hypothetical mentor who would manipulate a child through such a lie, but accepted the explanation once he learned that his mother, father, and brother had consented to the plan. He then recognized Yun Shou as his godfather and reunited with Shangguan Qingwan. 269 270
His mother’s return briefly undermined his reason for pursuing martial arts. Yun Shou redirected him by revealing the threat posed by the Monster Race and the Upper Realm, prompting Xiang Yang to resume training and travel through the Jianghu under covert protection. 270
Rise through the martial world
At eighteen, Xiang Yang reached Grandmaster-equivalent strength and won a Grandmaster tournament against Frost Snow Sect Saintess Tantai Yue. Her Ice Soul Saint Body and Ice Cold Gang Jin helped suppress the excess Yang energy in his body, making her constitution useful to his cultivation. 271
He converted Pure Yang Art into the broader Nine Yang Art, ascended to the Azure Domain, and refused to spend Battle Merit exempting himself from mandatory War Zone service. Although he framed the decision as walking his own path, Yun Shou recognized that Xiang Yang primarily wanted the excitement of battle. 272
His rapid growth earned him recognition as a Human Race prodigy. By age 23, he had Innate Perfection combat power; later, he defeated an Overlord, developed a technique for Yun Shou, and reached strength comparable to a Supreme. 164 165
Long voyage and Immortal era
After reaching higher realms, Xiang Yang continued creating sun-themed systems rather than relying on inherited paths. He repeatedly sought stronger opponents and broader worlds, becoming a powerful Fifteenth Heaven cultivator. 457
His conduct attracted Yu Ziyan, the Seventh Realm master of the Silent Sect. Unable to permanently deter her pursuit—even after physically attacking her—Xiang Yang spent more than a thousand years fleeing across Emperor Domains. 458
Xiang Yang eventually became a Co-Lord of Spring and Autumn. Learning that Calamity Beasts were consuming the Yuan Tian Realm’s Destiny, he chose to fight for the realm’s survival, though Yun Shou doubted that duty was his only motivation. 468
Appearance
Xiang Yang’s body becomes progressively larger and more muscular as his cultivation advances. At eighteen, he was already approximately 2.1 meters tall; later records describe him at 2.7 meters, nearly four meters, 4.2 meters, and five meters tall. 271 381 457 696 800
- Broad, heavily muscular physique; his cultivation is repeatedly associated with physical strength and “sun” imagery. 457
- Emits intense sunlight or sunfire effects during combat. 696
- Can compress or adjust his height, allowing him to lower himself to Yun Shou’s height. 457
- His sunfire affinity and strengthening body led Yun Shou to expect him to grow into an exceptionally large, muscular adult. 269 270
Personality
Xiang Yang is simple-minded, direct, and unusually trusting outside combat. As a child, he accepted Yun Shou’s status as an Upper Realm Martial Immortal with little surprise and readily shared the flaw in his Pure Yang Art with a passing Heavenly Human. 269 271
His defining motivation is the pursuit of strength, freedom, and exhilarating battle. He rejects safe, quiet cultivation in favor of travel, danger, and fighting powerful opponents; he considers a life without combat and passion intolerable. 272 458
He shows little romantic interest. His initial attention toward Tantai Yue stemmed from the usefulness of her Ice Soul Saint Body rather than personal attraction, and he later failed to recognize her when visiting the Frost Snow Sect. 272 381 382
Although not consistently altruistic toward strangers, he is fiercely protective of Yun Shou. After becoming a True Immortal, he defeated six veteran Co-Lords of Spring and Autumn and compelled them to acknowledge Yun Shou as their “Godfather” if Essence Blessing benefited them. 469 470
Abilities & Skills
Pure Yang Art and Nine Yang Art
Xiang Yang independently created a cultivation system centered on internal suns and Yang energy.
- Uses sun-like medicinal herbs to form a heat source in his dantian. 269
- The initial heat source automatically tempers his body; it can raise his physical strength to Second-rate Martial Artist level within roughly half a year. 269
- A larger heat source can be actively used, supplying power from First-rate Martial Artist to Martial Master level. 269
- The later Pure Yang stages correspond to Grandmaster through Great Grandmaster combat power. 269
- Nine Yang Art uses multiple suns: one represents Grandmaster to Great Grandmaster, two to four represent Innate, five is half-step Heavenly Human, and six to nine represent Heavenly Human. 272
- Excess Yang energy can destabilize his body; ice-aligned materials or powers are needed to balance it. 271 381
Sun-based cultivation systems
After establishing Nine Yang Art, Xiang Yang develops several distinct but complementary systems.
- His systems include high-temperature suns, explosive suns, lava suns, destructive suns, cold-producing suns, and life-illuminating suns. 457
- His muscles, spirit, and Vital Energy are each cultivated through sun-related principles. 457
- His Sun Wheel Dao Seal can transform its user into a sun that illuminates everything; a low-quality imitation of it exists elsewhere. 612
- He uses attacks such as a miniature sun, an obliterated dark sun, and large-scale flames capable of burning mycelium across tens of thousands of li. 469 492 272
Saint Body
Xiang Yang awakens a fire-elemental Saint Body after entering the Hundred Races Battlefield.
- His Saint Body emerges only after his self-created system already grants extraordinary power. 164 272
- His combat statistics at the Second Realm are compared to a Seven-All Battle Body, while most Human Saint Bodies at that realm measure only two to three All. 272
- His Saint Body and immense Essence amplify his growth after reaching the Immortal level. 471 472
Combat prowess
Xiang Yang specializes in direct, overwhelming physical combat.
- Defeats Tantai Yue in a Grandmaster tournament by one move. 271
- Defeats an Overlord of the Frost Snow Sect’s region. 165
- Vanishes during a duel with the Golden Crow Demon Venerable; the associated Human–Monster conflict ends the following year. 166
- Defeats six Co-Lords of Spring and Autumn before bringing them to Yun Shou. 469
- Kills a stage-five True Immortal-equivalent Calamity Beast in two strikes using 3,000 Dao Power. 489
Technique creation
Xiang Yang possesses exceptional insight into cultivation theory and adapts methods to specific needs.
- Creates his own martial system rather than following Innate or Heavenly Human methods. 164
- Designs a custom body-refining technique for Yun Shou after failing to remove the Overlord Demon Egg. 165
- The technique can raise Yun Shou’s physique to five times that of a Second Realm Abyssal Demon when cultivated to its limit. 165
Relationships
- Yun Shou — Godfather, mentor, and closest long-term supporter. Yun Shou staged Shangguan Qingwan’s death, guided Xiang Yang’s cultivation, and later receives Xiang Yang’s protection against True Immortals. 268 269 469
- Shangguan Qingwan — Mother. Her staged death drove his childhood vow to become the sun; they reunite when Yun Shou exposes the truth. 268 270
- Xiang Cheng — Father and Liancheng City Lord; participated in the decision to conceal Shangguan Qingwan’s survival. 267 268 269
- Xiang Tian — Older brother. He helped maintain the deception surrounding their mother’s supposed death. 268
- Tantai Yue — Tournament rival and Frost Snow Sect Saintess. Her Ice Soul Saint Body helped suppress his excess Yang energy, but Xiang Yang later showed no personal interest in her. 271 381
- Chu Heshang — Early patron instructed to support and cultivate Xiang Yang; he recognized Xiang Yang as an extraordinary self-made prodigy. 164
- Bei Chenguang — Fellow Human Race prodigy and Yun Shou’s adopted son. Xiang Yang refers to him as an elder brother in dealings with the Frost Snow Sect. 165 381
- Yu Ziyan — Silent Sect master who relentlessly pursues Xiang Yang after falling for him during a joint expedition; he repeatedly flees her across domains. 458
- Song Xiaohu — Later arena opponent; their bouts are fought at full intensity in a setting where death is not a consequence. 696
