History
Origin of the Thirty-Six Heavens
The Heavenly Court's domain originated when a jade palace merged with a gap in the sky and evolved into thirty-six vast heavens. The heavens contained imposing treasure palaces and dense Dao Rhyme, drawing the attention of beings throughout the Great Desolation 151.
The Thirty-Six Heavens contain 129,600 Heavenly Palaces. Each palace holds one to three Innate Spiritual Treasures that serve as proof of its lordship; the lower ten heavens primarily contain Mid-grade Innate Spiritual Treasures 165.
Di Jun's founding era
Di Jun first seized practical control of the Thirty-Six Heavens by activating the Imperial Seal, which revoked the authority of every heavenly-palace master except Tai Yi and forcibly separated them from the treasures that represented their positions 197.
He then declared his intention to create the Heavenly Court, arguing that governing the Dao Venerable-created Thirty-Six Heavens was the proper way to prevent chaos and act on behalf of heaven 201. Di Jun formally petitioned the Dao Venerable and Heavenly Dao to establish the institution; both approved his request 212.
The Heavenly Dao's merits cleansed the karmic obstacles of Di Jun, Tai Yi, and the Court's members, while also advancing their cultivation. Di Jun became the Heavenly Emperor, Tai Yi the Eastern Emperor, and the Court established ten major legions under appointed marshals 213.
Di Jun subsequently enfeoffed Bai Ze as his personal strategist, assigned Heavenly Palaces to his followers through the Imperial Seal, and encouraged officials to earn greater palaces through service 214. Kun Peng later joined as Demon Master after the Court consolidated control of the Thirty-Six Heavens 230.
Struggles for the heavens
The Court's early identification with the Demon Race caused it to be called the Demon Court, though it later fought forces described as the Demon Race under Jieyin and Zhunti 224 289. It also faced the Immortal Court, founded by East King Duke and Queen Mother of the West to challenge Di Jun's rule over the Thirty-Six Heavens 259 260.
To counter karmic attacks and infiltration, Di Jun developed the Grand Formation of the Stars. The formation was designed to transfer karma, mobilize stellar power, and serve as both a defensive and offensive system 259 308. Once completed, it enclosed the Thirty-Six Heavens, transferred karmic debt to the combined Spirit of Destiny, and prevented enemies from entering Heavenly Court members' Primordial Spirits to provoke Inner Demons 343.
During Di Jun's Heavenly Marriage to Xi He and Chang Xi, Tai Yi activated the Grand Formation of the Stars to isolate the Court and trap the attending Demon Race within it 362 363.
Restoration and divine administration
After the Human-Demon War destroyed the Four Great Heavenly Gates, the Human Race rebuilt them in a grander form 431. Han Su later took charge of the Heavenly Court, enlisted Saints and fellow disciples to assist in governing the Thirty-Six Heavens, and appointed Cui Wei as Heavenly Emperor 429.
Han Su was accepted by the Jiangxiao Xuanguang Palace without refinement and received the Heavenly Book. The palace revealed that it could control the Thirty-Six Heavens, while the Heavenly Book gave Han Su the authority to confer divine positions and arrange officials within the heavens 432.
Cui Wei and Han Su later proclaimed themselves the Heavenly Emperor and Emperor Lord, citing vacant divine offices and the need to restore the operation and order of heaven and earth 621. Following the Investiture of the Gods Kala, Shen Gongbao received the Heavenly Book and presided over the Investiture of the Gods, establishing a new divine order for the Three Realms 665 670.
