Evelyn is the daughter of the old king of the Eastern Kingdom and Ulrika, a bearer of the Caesar bloodline. To seek protection for that lineage, Ulrika married the aging king. Ulrika later died under unexplained circumstances; at six years old, Evelyn personally buried her mother. 151

After her mother’s death, the court increasingly distanced itself from Evelyn. At her coming-of-age ceremony, she declined the king’s surname and took her mother’s Caesar surname instead, accepting the political burden of being regarded as a possible remnant of the Caesar Empire. The old king later sent her to govern the difficult Icewind Territory while selecting an heir among his children. 151
