Background / History
Formation and the Great Crusade
Before Mordred assumed command, Second Legion warriors had served among other Legions and endured poor treatment. Their captains nevertheless accumulated substantial scavenged resources. Mordred renamed the Legion Atlas, renamed its flagship Abomination Exemplar, brought his Serenity clansmen into the organization, and launched a Five-Year Plan emphasizing infrastructure and population growth 3 8.
He subsequently compiled the Atlas Codex, established the Black Knights with The Khan to manage sensitive internal affairs, and sent Rambo and Auxilia to establish a training ground on Catachan 23. Atlas expanded into military supply recovery, biochemical experimentation, and dealings with wealthy Rogue Traders; the Serenity–Chemos United Economic Zone extended its economic reach 30.
Atlas's campaigns also supplied its research and industry. After conquering Inkarati, its forces removed lost technology, weapons, and the Golden Tree 44. By thirty-five years into its development, Atlas had entered every aspect of the Imperium. At its peak, eighteen of the nineteen Legions worked closely with it 162 475.
Defense of the Heartland
Nearly two centuries of construction made Serenity the central node of Atlas's Imperial transport network. Mordred expected its Impregnable Defense Line to intercept any force advancing toward Terra 269.
The Chaos offensive overwhelmed that line despite planetary shield arrays and enormous fixed artillery. Mordred ordered a retreat to Atlas's home planets, called for reinforcement, and deployed Chaos Energy Bombs. Defenders fought through Hive City streets while consuming enemy flesh and souls to replenish their forces 279 280 282.
The subsequent crisis spread beyond the heartland. Atlas troops at Terra's Webway Gate mutated and turned against one another and the Iron Warriors, prompting Perturabo to assume command. On Tallarn, Atlas likewise attacked itself and the Imperium, while opposing Legions assembled to stop Mordred's ascension 285 290.
Disappearance and Survival
After Atlas vanished, its material legacy remained throughout Imperial warehouses and on Terra, but memories associated with Mordred disappeared. The loss also precipitated the collapse of the Imperium's logistics system and existing technology; nearly half of the Atlasians killed themselves during the ensuing madness 300 331.
Before Mordred's death, Tom received orders to survive and preserve the remaining 782 Space Marines. Through Operation Paperclip and the Blood Ravens, survivors preserved Legion history and recovered Atlas's scattered legacy 465. Other Atlasians sustained the Emperor for five thousand years by burning Chaos Energy and resisting hostile summons within his body 367.
The Primarchs eventually discovered Atlas's enormous Webway stockpiles and divided their ships, Titans, equipment, and other assets among the Legions. Surviving Blood Ravens were allowed to retain their designation under the Iron Hands 304.
Reconstruction
Mordred's return brought concealed Atlas members out of other Chapters. Angell declared his allegiance and left the Iron Hands, while numerous Marines arrived claiming Mordred as their father. Chapters also sought to invest in Atlas's reconstruction 357.
Guilliman supported restarting Atlas's shipping network. More than three thousand long-serving Atlasians formed the backbone of the rebuilt organization, while Mordred restarted the Spartan Project, founded training institutions, and opened technology exchanges with participating Forge Worlds 371 437.
The rebuilt Atlas resumed large-scale equipment subsidies and freight operations. Its latest Legion-wide transformation added mechanical fusion, stronger regeneration, and a substantially more powerful collective mental field 489 490 497.
Identity and Appearance
- Colors and insignia: Black-and-red armor and an A Character Mark, also displayed on Atlas shipping 230 357 437.
- Typical stature: Atlas Marines averaged approximately 2.8 meters before Primaris conversion. Later comparisons place them around ten feet after conversion 131 465.
- Daemonic forms: Fully mycelial Atlasians can possess horns, tails, four arms, and claws 477.
- Silver Knights: Second Company members appear almost entirely bald because their hair has been replaced with nanoscale neural conduits 380.
- Personal presentation: Flashy hairstyles, long coats, and conspicuous equipment distinguish Atlas personnel, even when their armor resembles another Legion's 357 380.
Organization
Leadership and Companies
| Formation / Position | Known Personnel | Function or Distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Primarch | Mordred Wayne | Source of Legion-wide enhancements and architect of Atlas's development 8 131 |
| Legion command | Goff Myne; Roland | Goff acts as Atlas's practical commander; both later manage Legion operations 41 437 |
| First Company — Black Knights | The Khan | Special operations, secret work, and sensitive internal affairs 23 172 380 |
| Second Company — Silver Knights | Goff Myne | Administration and command. Its 555 linked Marines form the leadership core of Atlas and the Third Fleet 380 |
| Fourth Company | Gawain | Civil-engineering expertise, daemon-assisted infiltration, and combat using a Thunder Demon 48 118 |
| Fifth Company | Shuk | Maintains ties with warriors outside Atlas, including Xios 193 |
| Eighth Company | Tom | Operation Paperclip, preservation of Atlas survivors, and the Blood Ravens' legacy 465 |
| Ninth Company | Joseph is involved in its operations | Professional intelligence department; suppresses information and arranges cover stories 15 |
Atlas is described as lacking the cliques common to other Legions. Its principal practical division is between the roughly ninety percent who resemble Mordred's opportunistic slackers and Goff's administrative Second Company 132.
Recorded Strength
These figures describe Atlas at particular points, not its reconstructed strength.
| Force | Recorded Strength | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas Space Marines | Fewer than 20,000, later 80,000 | Low gene-seed compatibility restricts recruitment, but numbers continue to grow 131 250 |
| Spartan Warriors | 300,000 | Intermediate enhanced troops positioned between Auxilia and Space Marines 250 437 |
| Ogryn | 2,000,000 | Selected for the ability to understand basic commands 250 |
| Upgraded Auxilia | 40,000,000 | Mechanized infantry supported by Atlas's extensive armaments industry 250 279 |
| Lizardmen Beast Regiment | No fixed total stated | Mushroom nurseries produce troops when sufficient nutrients are available 250 280 |
Recruitment and Training
- Officer-centered doctrine: Atlas trains Marines as junior officers rather than solely as warriors, allowing them to command larger formations 342.
- Catachan course: The original training model requires twelve years, with weekly tests, monthly evaluations, and practical battlefield exercises 342.
- Recruit trials: Challenges include adamantium-beaked giant chickens, Catachan creatures, veteran-operated Mushroom Knights, mines, sentry guns, and Titans 174 175.
- Spartan Project: Repeatedly restarted and upgraded to compensate for the shortage of Atlas Marines and fill the middle tier of its command structure 418 437.
- Atlas Sergeant Academy: Uses ancient veterans to train personnel from multiple Legions and Chapters 437.
- Webway training: Veterans teach recruits; Greyshields learn from Chaos veterans while monitoring them, and Atlas supervises and evaluates the Greyshields 497.
Abilities & Skills
Adaptive Gene-Seed and Concealment
Atlas's native gene-seed absorbs nearby soul fragments and gradually adapts its host to the Legion in which they serve 465.
- Marines can acquire Legion-specific traits, including stealth, strength, cellular activity, durability, and psychic aptitude 303 334.
- Adaptation is slow and shaped by placement rather than freely chosen 334.
- Atlas's extremely low compatibility rate led to a dual-core model; some Marines genetically resemble descendants of both Mordred and Koz 285.
- Concealment can be convincing enough to fool Alpharius. Even Mordred can misidentify an Atlas Marine who firmly believes himself to belong to another Legion 334 357.
Mind Network and Collective Thinking
The Khala links Atlas with its wider forces through telepathy and shared mental resources 131.
- Exchanges orders, combat experience, knowledge, emotions, and computing power 131.
- Lets Mordred observe through individual Atlasians 368.
- Supports extremely fine battlefield control, including repositioning a gun emplacement by centimeters 342.
- Depends on surviving central control nodes; decapitation of those nodes threatens the command system 342.
- Its later evolution can produce reality-affecting results from small groups, although the newest version remains insufficiently tested 490.
Soul Consumption and Fel Energy
Atlas converts enemy flesh and souls into supplies and absorbs soul fragments shed by nearby lifeforms 280 436.
- Chaos Energy Crystals: Strengthen Marines and daemon pets, restore damaged bodies, and provide ingredients for combat drugs 67 279 492.
- Sorcery: Includes Life Drain, Soul Devour, Chaos Energy Armor, Soul Fireball, Daemon Transformation, and Mindless Arrows 436.
- Mindless Arrows: Green energy attacks capable of reducing an enemy's intelligence 436.
- Daemonic forms: Can unleash more of their strength between the Warp and reality, where material restrictions are absent 118.
- Risk: The same power system permits catastrophic mutation and attacks on allies during Mordred's crisis 285 290.
Mycelial Regeneration and Organic Warfare
Symbiosis with mycelium turns Atlas personnel into exceptionally resilient fungal-daemonic organisms 279 477.
- Severe bodily damage can be repaired with Chaos Energy Crystals, mushrooms, and Chaos Energy drinks 279 280.
- Destruction of the brain remains a critical limitation 279.
- Jingba Mushrooms serve as vehicles, food, medicine, energy sources, and disposable troops 280.
- Nutrient-fed mushroom beast nests hatch replacement Lizardmen forces 280.
- Later enhancements further improve cellular recovery and permit fusion with machinery 490.
Firepower and Boarding Operations
Atlas favors overwhelming firepower, indirect attacks, and survivability over straightforward duels 285 429.
- Bombards terrain before advancing and can bombard it again afterward 429.
- Uses massed Lizardmen under Marine command to limit Imperial casualties 285.
- Converts difficult engagements into boarding actions, including assaults on Battle Moons 142 144.
- Employs Mushroom Knights and unconventional missile-assisted deployments rather than relying exclusively on drop pods 442.
- Maintains extensive daemon equipment and hidden weapons that allow veterans to defeat stronger opponents through surprise 429.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Power armor: Develops specialized armor, including a frontal-protection-focused Mark III design for boarding; reconstructed forces receive newer equipment, including Mark X armor 189 379.
- Auxilia exoskeletons: T-series systems increase mobility and survival. Even ordinary Atlas privates receive Type-3 mechanical exoskeletons 174 418.
- Miniature nuclear launchers: Signature export weapons that substantially increase individual Marine firepower 162.
- Dreadnought mechs: Can be piloted by intact personnel rather than requiring permanent entombment 162 379.
- Improved neural links: Reduce Dreadnought phantom pain, restore awareness of the outside world, and permit network access 193 379.
- Titan forces: One documented deployment includes two Warlords, six Dire Wolves, and Tactical Dreadnoughts capable of brief aerial gliding 174.
- Daemon armaments: Produced using Mordred's ability to seize daemons from the Chaos Gods 448.
- Organic support materials: Chaos Energy Pulp Orange Juice, Jingba Mushrooms, and absorbable biological compounds provide battlefield repair 280 416.
Reconstructed Equipment Subsidies
Atlas supplies equipment and training to other Imperial forces, including Chapters unable to support recruits abroad 489.
| Allocation | Equipment |
|---|---|
| Standard support | Power armor, bolters, ammunition, and supplies 489 |
| Every 50 Marines | One suit of Indomitus Terminator Armor 489 |
| Every 100 Marines | One Centurion 489 |
| Every 200 Marines | One Atlas-exclusive Tactical Dreadnought 489 |
| Chapter-level support | Titans allocated by headcount, accompanying Knights, and wholesale Cobra-class vessels 489 |
Territory, Infrastructure, and Economy
Transport and Defenses
| Asset | Importance |
|---|---|
| Serenity and the Serenity 50 Worlds | Industrial heartland and central transport hub; factories supply Imperial campaigns 230 269 401 |
| Serenity–Olympia–Nostramo Webway route | Established with Kialan's assistance; greatly shortens travel compared with Warp voyages alone 134 |

Economic and Research Policy
- Arms-for-spoils trade: Atlas appears after campaigns to exchange equipment and novel devices for war trophies 162.
- Civil investment: Accumulated wealth funds infrastructure, living standards, troop quality, pay, compensation, and explicit promotion paths 174.
- Civilian conditions: Tallarn's Atlas-supported population works ten-hour days with weekends off; wartime production later places severe pressure on the Serenity factories 290 401.
- Technology exchange: Participants share knowledge to obtain new technology; solving technical problems can earn preferential resource allocations 437.
- Research base: Includes technological restoration, biochemical experimentation, STC modules recovered by the Blood Ravens, and the Holy Terra Vocational Technical College 30 437.
- Mechanicus partnerships: Mordred recruits Forge Worlds including Yellow Spring No. 8, Iron Ball, and Ryza into his own technological faction 437.
- Distribution-system review: Mordred concludes that Atlas's former monopoly-based allocation model was unsustainable. During the Great Crusade, the Webway Project had consumed resources while Atlas also supplied other forces 479.
