Background

Gilgamesh was born as the oldest King of Heroes and a “Wedge of Heaven,” a being created to restrain humanity and preserve the gods’ worship. Rather than accept the gods’ intended control, he came to despise them and rejected the role they had assigned him. 29 36

In his youth, Gilgamesh ruled during a famine and acted with the arrogance expected of a king with divine blood. Nameless confronted him directly, accusing him of failing his people and of being nothing more than a watchdog for the gods. Gilgamesh did not strike him down, instead recognizing the suffering throughout Uruk. 31 32

He later became the Wise King remembered for rebuilding Uruk from ruin and personally organizing its economy, livelihood, education, politics, and military affairs. His leadership transformed the city into a prosperous civilization whose people revered him. 29 53

During Uruk’s final battle against Tiamat, Gilgamesh remained behind after most defenders had fallen. He commanded all 360 King’s Cannons himself and was struck through the chest by Tiamat’s death ray after pushing Nameless aside. 196 202

As the Wise King, however, he is disciplined, capable, and fiercely responsible for Uruk. He works himself to exhaustion for his people, insists on constant frontline reports, and refuses surrender even when the city’s destruction is inevitable. 113 181 202

He maintains a combative, teasing attitude toward Nameless, often making help conditional on being asked. Beneath this behavior, he repeatedly offers assistance against enemies powerful enough to endanger Uruk, Dragon Country, and Human History. 39 234 376
