Appearance
Borsalino wears sunglasses and is shown in a yellow-and-white striped suit with a white admiral’s Coat of Justice. At forty-four, he has facial wrinkles and some stubble 2703 2717 2766 2769.
- Sunglasses — described with brown or amber-tinted lenses; he also keeps a glasses-shaped divine tool on his face 2349 2703 2767.
- Usual posture — often sits with his legs crossed or stands with a hand in his trouser pocket 2717 2765.
Personality
Borsalino speaks in a drawn-out, teasing manner and often complains about troublesome work. He considered retiring in exchange for a third-class viscount title, but abandoned the plan after Sengoku, Sakazuki, and Enel intervened 97 706 707. His relaxed manner does not prevent him from arriving early for important duties or carrying out orders decisively 2352 2356.
He is willing to revise a bad command decision: after the Sylph explains why his naval formation is unsuitable for space warfare, he redeploys the fleet around Mandeville Points 2762. He also rejects a proposal to use newly captured fleets as cannon fodder, reasoning that their crews may soon become World Government citizens and that the tactic would undermine the goodwill earned by protecting Gintama Star 2780.
Abilities & Skills
Glint-Glint Fruit
Borsalino’s awakened Logia ability lets him become light and produce destructive lasers 97 2058.
- Yasakani no Magatama — fires vast barrages of light beams. He uses it against pirate ships and to overwhelm an artillery position of nearly three thousand howitzers 97 444.
- Light-form travel — lets him cross space without needing to breathe or shield himself from radiation. He limits his travel speed to what he can perceive; moving close to light speed without that restraint would leave him unable to tell where he was going 959 2765.
- Elementalization — conventional physical and energy attacks pass through his photon-form body unless reinforced by extraordinary power 2764.
- Light clones — missed light bullets can become sword-wielding Kizaru clones. He later forms nine tangible clones alongside his true body 2355 2786.
- Shared elementalization — his awakening can temporarily grant officers light-form flight and ultra-high-speed combat in space. Using the awakening twice in a short period tires him 2784.
- Light avatar — manifests the colossal Amaterasu form during the threat to Gintama Star 2776.
- Eye lasers — a technique inspired by Homelander that he uses to kill Captain Xiangpu 2769.
Swordsmanship and Physical Arts
Borsalino combines light with close-range fighting despite Zephyr’s concern about his sword training 697.
- Ama no Murakumo — forms a light sword; in space, he compresses his entire light-form body into a sword to pierce warships and cut through their interiors 697 959.
- Defensive sword use — he and nine clones extend their light swords and cleave Galaxy Gun beams, redirecting the divided energy into Galactic Empire warships 2786.
- Light Speed Kick — used while testing Enel under Zephyr’s orders 697.
- Controlled force — stops Umibouzu’s full-strength charge with one punch while deliberately keeping the blow from killing or launching him away 2769.
Haki and Perception
- Observation Haki — guides his evasions through dense laser fire and helps him search fleets for individual presences. Battlefield interference and travel time can delay the information it returns 959 2764.
- Future Sight — reaches about ten seconds ahead; his Glint-Glint Fruit also greatly expands his sensory range through light 2762.
- Light-based perception — allows him to see some past events associated with people, though he considers the effect of little practical use 2762.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Glasses-shaped divine tool — contains Sylph’s divine soul; Borsalino keeps it on his face, but how much of its power he has comprehended is unknown 2349.
- The Sylph — flagship of his First Fleet and home to a conscious Digital Race shipboard intelligence, also called Sylph 2349 2717 2762.
- Visual Den Den Mushi — used to record a battle between plants and zombie-like creatures while exploring Jupiter 1265.
Relationships
- Zephyr — his teacher; criticizes his sword training and opposes his proposed retirement, but trusts him to lead a major expedition 697 707 2352.
- Sengoku — informs him of his Air Force promotion and later reacts with dismay to his retirement plan 355 706.
- Kuzan — replaces him at Reverse Mountain; the two later serve among the Navy’s Admirals 355 2139.
- Enel — an opponent in a test ordered by Zephyr; Borsalino also teases him about another lightning user’s strength 697 1437.
- Sylph — the flagship’s intelligence advises him on fleet deployment and battlefield tactics; he accepts her correction about Mandeville Points but rejects her proposed use of captured ships as cover 2762 2780.
- Fan Jie — former Harusame commander who joins Borsalino’s forces and supplies intelligence; Borsalino praises his takeover of the Shogunate Self-Defense Fleet 2703 2726.
- Umibouzu — speaks with him at length aboard a Harusame flagship, explains that his children are safe, and then spares him after stopping his attack 2766 2768 2769.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Early Marine service — as Vice Admiral Kizaru, attacks fleeing pirate ships with massed light beams; later earns promotion through his branch’s record at Reverse Mountain 97 355.
- Otherworld campaigns — joins the Air Force’s Otherworld operations and destroys an enemy artillery position with Yasakani no Magatama 355 444.
- Space Pirate counterattack — flies from the lunar battlefield into space and cuts through Audette Space Pirate warships using Ama no Murakumo 958 959.
- First Fleet expedition — leads a 587-vessel expedition against the Galactic Empire with 500,000 soldiers and two million mechanical crew members. Its early operations destroy supply bases, strike patrols and an industrial planet, and tie down Galactic Empire forces 2352 2545.
- Gintama Star campaign — encounters Harusame, confronts Umibouzu, protects Gintama Star with Amaterasu, and directs an officer force empowered by his light ability against the Galactic Empire’s Seventh Fleet 2685 2766 2776 2784.
- Galaxy Gun interception — intervenes when the Seventh Fleet fires on his officers, using his true body and nine clones to split the beams 2786.
