Background / History
Kakarot is Bardock and Gine's youngest son. His extremely low birth Battle Power places him at the bottom of Saiyan warrior rankings. Talot nevertheless recognizes him as the protagonist of the story he knew before transmigrating and understands that his initial weakness does not represent his eventual potential 4 5.
Bardock arranges Kakarot's departure from Planet Vegeta as danger from Frieza approaches. On Earth, Son Gohan takes him in and names him Son Goku. A fall from a cliff causes him to lose his earlier memories, leaving him unable to recognize Talot when they meet again 17 63 70.
Gine initially intends to watch over him without revealing their relationship, but Son Gohan's advice changes that plan. Mother and son acknowledge each other, although the infant Goku does not yet understand the relationship. Gine accepts his new name and remains near him as an ordinary mother without trying to dictate his growth 70.
Appearance
- Strong resemblance to Bardock: Raditz remarks that the young Goku looks exactly like their father; the resemblance also astonishes witnesses when Bardock appears in the Android-era alternate timeline 90 272.
- Dark, crab-like hairstyle: In Super Saiyan 1, his hair becomes golden and spikes upward 200.
- Physical growth: Develops a sturdier body during adolescence, grows noticeably taller after the Frieza conflict, and appears as a young man at the 23rd tournament 146 179 190.
- Ultra Instinct Sign appearance, Super timeline: Faint silver divine power surrounds him, with white light lingering around his hair 356.
Personality
Goku is innocent and pure-hearted, but not unintelligent. He quickly understands what Talot's next training stage entails and diligently studies principles he previously used without understanding. Even when Roshi's exercises are easy for him, he continues training alongside Yamcha and Krillin, strengthening their friendship and teamwork 99 101 146 147.
Powerful opponents usually excite him more than they frighten him. Watching Raditz and Selari spar turns his initial shock into eagerness, while defeat by Talot leads him to seek further guidance rather than abandon training. His kindness remains evident after he nearly kills Vegeta unintentionally: he regrets the injury and admits that he cannot yet control his Super Saiyan strength freely 146 154 210.
Abilities & Skills
Ki Cultivation and Flight
- Learns the Saiyan Flight Technique through Raditz's childhood guidance, before formally becoming Roshi's disciple 99.
- Initially lacks complete freedom in flight and continues using the Flying Nimbus 146.
- Talot teaches him systematic ki gathering, control, release, flight, and energy-blast use 146.
- Can locate powerful opponents through their ki, including Demon King Piccolo and the approaching Vegeta and Nappa 149.
Martial Arts and Combat Adaptation
- Uses the Turtle School's balanced offensive and defensive methods 152 200.
- Learns an opponent's attack patterns during combat, allowing him to counter Vegeta's rapid assault 154.
- Recognizes Talot's deliberately exposed lessons and corrects weaknesses during their tournament match 209.
- In the Android-era alternate timeline, develops a New Turtle School Fighting Method that neutralizes Vegeta's attacks while creating counterattacking opportunities 295.
Kaio-ken and Super Kaio-ken
- Temporarily increases his power and speed; he raises its multiplier repeatedly against Nappa, Vegeta, and Raditz 151 152 187.
- Combines Super Saiyan power with Super Kaio-ken during his semifinal against Talot 210.
- Inadequate ki control creates dangerous backlash at higher multipliers. Raditz warns that the resulting internal injuries could be incurable 187.
- GT Goku can apply Kaio-ken to Super Saiyan 4 because its bloodline enhancement greatly strengthens his body, reaching a twentyfold boost 305.
Saiyan Transformations and Recovery Growth
- Possesses the Great Ape transformation and later learns Super Saiyan through Talot's training program 91 147 153.
- Activates Super Saiyan power through his S-Cells and internal Super Saiyan Energy Pool 187 200.
- Gains strength after recovering from injury or severe exhaustion. Talot deliberately incorporates repeated recovery into his initial intensive training 146.
- His early Super Saiyan power exceeds his control; later tournament appearances show smooth transformation with no energy leakage 154 200.
- Higher forms differ by timeline: the main Goku reaches Super Saiyan 2, the Android-era counterpart reaches Super Saiyan 3, GT Goku uses Super Saiyan 4, and Super Goku uses divine transformations 210 296 303 364.

- Talot sets a base Battle Power requirement of 100,000 as a training goal before Goku may learn the technique; Raditz begins teaching him once he qualifies 147 179.
- The Super-timeline counterpart uses Instant Transmission to rescue Vegeta from Masked Goku Black 339.
Instinctive Combat and Ultra Instinct
- GT counterpart: Enters a selfless combat state driven by bodily instinct, sharply improving perception and reactions. Talot explicitly distinguishes this from genuine Ultra Instinct 305.
- Super counterpart: Awakens Ultra Instinct Sign, but the breakthrough occurs by coincidence and cannot yet be activated at will 356 364.
