Background / History
Alex is the son of Count Colt Iron Birch. At the time he first meets Victor Golden Sunflower, Alex identifies himself as the second son; his elder brother John is then the Viscount and expected heir. Alex later becomes the Iron Birch Family's heir, taking on broader responsibilities for his father’s military and political plans. 15 353 355
He initially acts as the Iron Birch Family’s envoy to influential eastern nobles, seeking partners for Count Colt’s northern-development strategy. He negotiates a favorable land exchange with Victor, offering northern land in return for the Golden Sunflower Territory’s exclave and securing Victor’s support for the Iron Birch Family. 15
Alex is responsible for the Northern Frontier Chamber of Commerce’s business. He reformed the organization by purging internal corruption, improving its management and sales methods, and incorporating local nobles into branch associations. Its merchant stations provide warhorses, supplies, intelligence, and logistical support across the Grand Duchy and surrounding regions. 180 194 214
Appearance
Alex is a silver-haired young nobleman whose public presentation emphasizes refinement and aristocratic bearing. During field operations, he wears armor and a helmet; prolonged travel and forest movement can leave him covered in leaves and broken branches. 15 181
- Silver hair. 15
- Often accompanied by black-armored Iron Birch guards. 15
- Uses Iron Birch bark half-armor during covert operations; it is light enough to preserve stamina. 180
- Wears a black fur cloak in winter. 355
Personality
Alex publicly maintains the image of an elegant, refined noble and has a strong reputation among nobles across the country. In private, Victor finds this aloof persona misleading: Alex is talkative, enthusiastic, and prone to playful banter. 15 157 158
He is politically perceptive and ambitious, consistently framing alliances, commerce, military merit, and territorial expansion as connected parts of the Iron Birch Family’s long-term position. He is also highly protective of allies and subordinates, personally arranging support, rewarding messengers, and rushing to relieve endangered forces. 99 320 420
Alex can be ruthless when necessary. During the interception of the Raine envoy, he uses executions and threats to break resistance and obtain intelligence, but later honors his promise to protect Baron Rossi and bring him north. 200 201 203
