During the refinement of the Origin Flame, Sage Ancestor was severely injured by the Fire Spirit's hidden attack; flesh and blood had only begun reforming over his body when the Black Tortoise returned with the captured spirit. He refused the Fire Spirit's plea for mercy, crushed it with Immortal-Demon Power, and refined it to support his advance. 697

The Medicine Spirit could no longer sustain its protective role after the battle, so Sage Ancestor ordered the Black Tortoise—whose life aura shared the Medicine Spirit's source—to protect him instead. The Black Tortoise's power quickly restored his life aura to its peak. 697
