Geography and Structure

The realm was described as “half mountain, half sea,” containing hundreds of Immortal Domains of differing sizes. Domains ruled by Immortal Sects were classified as Great Domains, while those without them were Small Domains. 242

• Northern Profound Domain — A Small Domain whose leading power was the Northern Profound Upper Sect; its territory alone exceeded the then-current True Martial World in size. 242

Governance

Although its name suggests geography, the Mountain and Sea Realm was named for its two most powerful cultivators: Mountain Ancestor and Sea Ancestor, contemporaries whose existence predates known history. 289

The realm was nominally governed by three powers:

• Mountain Ancestor (Hao Shan) — Controlled the continental side through the Zhou Mountain Immortal Sect and eventually sought to sacrifice the entire realm for his own ascension. 344 403
• Sea Ancestor (Qing Hai) — Controlled the Endless Sea and the Moon Sea Immortal Sect; she opposed Mountain Ancestor after learning of his past crimes and ambitions. 345 402
• Mountain and Sea Realm Will — The realm's natural will and nominal World Lord, whose true body was imprisoned by the two Ancestors. 344

Domain Lords

The Realm Will delegated portions of its World Power to Domain Lords, allowing them to manage individual domains and suppress enemies within their own territory. This authority could not be used in the War Domain. 301 307

Domain Lords were expected to:

• Manage their assigned Spirit Domains. 301
• Conquer and integrate Lesser Worlds into the Mountain and Sea Realm. 301
• Establish and defend Nodes in the War Domain through Heavenly Stars and underground altars. 307

Realm Will

The Mountain and Sea Realm Will developed spiritual consciousness after the realm's formation. Mountain Ancestor and Sea Ancestor discovered it, extracted portions of its power, sealed its true body, and allowed it to act externally only through an avatar. 344

Its imprisonment reduced its title as World Lord to largely ceremonial authority. It could observe the War Domain, grant Domain Power, and issue orders, but remained constrained by the two Ancestors. 344 355

Relationship with Ning Qi

The Realm Will initially regarded Ning Qi as a valuable subordinate and attempted to recruit him as a disciple. Ning Qi refused while continuing to exploit the authority and World Power granted to him. 344

As Mountain Ancestor's scheme threatened the realm itself, the Will increasingly relied on Ning Qi:

• It offered to protect Ning Qi's people in exchange for his participation in the Dao Harmonization battle. 357
• It guided Ning Qi through Sea Ancestor's hidden cultivation ground and toward the realm's Core Land. 407 408
• Ning Qi prevented the Seedling of Jianmu from consuming the Will completely and destroyed Mountain Ancestor's Primordial Spirit Power within the sapling. 412
• After the realm was transferred into the True Martial World, the Will accepted the name Shanhai and became its Mountain and Sea Spirit. 416

History

Connection to the Martial World

Thousands of years before the main story, the Mountain and Sea Realm invaded the Martial World with thousands of Martial Saints. The Martial World's World Will awakened and repelled the invasion, but was severely weakened and entered slumber afterward. 210

The surviving Martial Saints of the Martial World erased Martial Saint cultivation methods and concealed spiritual qi. Their plan prevented new Martial Saints from becoming beacons for another invasion, suppressed the Life Poison, and accumulated energy to restore their World Will. 210

The Mountain and Sea Realm remained the Martial World's upper world: cultivators who surpassed the Martial Saint Realm and reached the Divine Power Realm could theoretically ascend to it. 210

Expansion Through Lesser Worlds

The realm incorporated several Spirit Realm origins and was believed to be preparing to sacrifice its subordinate Lesser Worlds for a further evolution. 242

Its growth was later revealed to be tied to the Seedling of Jianmu. Controlled by Mountain Ancestor, the seedling had consumed the power of the Mountain and Sea Realm and its Lesser Worlds for hundreds of thousands of years. 415

Spirit Realm War

The Mountain and Sea Realm initiated a war against the similarly sized Vast Origin Realm. Mountain Ancestor and Sea Ancestor jointly decreed the invasion, while the Vast Origin Realm fought defensively. 304

The two realms used their World Power and World Sea energy to form a War Domain between them. This battlefield was divided into Great Domains and Lesser Domains, with Nodes determining territorial control and allowing higher-level cultivators to enter once an entire Great Domain had been occupied. 301 302 334

The war also exposed the Realm Will's desperation: it hoped contact with another Spirit Realm might create an opportunity to escape the Ancestors' control. 344

Cataclysm and Merger

Mountain Ancestor eventually revealed that his true goal was not victory over the Vast Origin Realm, but the devouring of both Spirit Realms through the Buzhou Mountain Shadow. 405

After Mountain Ancestor broke the Mountain and Sea Realm Wall to enter the War Domain, the Buzhou Mountain Shadow continuously extracted the realm's spiritual qi and Power of Rules. The land around the breach became barren, continents cracked apart, and the realm entered a full cataclysm. 412 413

Ning Qi and the Realm Will responded by opening a passage to the True Martial World and relocating the Mountain and Sea Realm piece by piece:

• The Profound Truth Domain was transferred first. 413
• The Moon Sea Immortal Sect, other Spirit Domains, and their inhabitants followed. 413 414
• Ning Qi rescued the remaining survivors from the shattered realm. 414
• The Realm Will actively divided and moved damaged Spirit Domains to accelerate the transfer. 416

The remaining Mountain and Sea Realm was ultimately merged into the True Martial World. The resulting world surpassed the original Mountain and Sea Realm in size and energy, while Shanhai survived as its resident Mountain and Sea Spirit. 416
