Nature

The Heavenly Dao is the consciousness and governing order of the Primordial World. It is described as both having descended alongside the world's creation and as having arisen from the Primordial World itself. Its strength increases as the world, its laws, and its inhabitants grow stronger. 350 721

In its original state, it has no personal emotions, acting through instinct to complete its laws, strengthen itself, maintain order, dispense merit, and impose punishment. Its workings initially recognize neither good nor evil nor personal grievances. 6 9

Its later fusion with Hongjun gives the Heavenly Dao a more individual personality. The fusion affects both sides: the Heavenly Dao makes Hongjun colder and more ruthless, while Hongjun imparts selfish desires to the Heavenly Dao. 296 570

Background & History

When Hongjun became the first Sage of the Primordial Era, the Heavenly Dao responded with the Great Dao Heavenly Sound, auspicious phenomena, and a spontaneous celebration felt by all living beings. The event reflects its instinctive satisfaction at a development that strengthened the world and further completed its laws. 6 8 9

Hongjun's merger with the Dao began a prolonged struggle between Hongjun's personal will and the Heavenly Dao Laws for control of the Primordial Wilderness. At one point, Hongjun gained the initiative and began treating Taiyi as a dangerous variable that needed to be removed. 139

The Heavenly Dao ultimately prevailed in its conflict with Hongjun during the Investiture of the Gods aftermath. It replaced Hongjun, absorbed his true spirit, and used his body as its outward form. It later clarified to Taiyi that it had merely borrowed Hongjun's shell to be reborn. 274 281 283

After taking control, the Heavenly Dao attempted to reunite the shattered Primordial Continent. The process caused disasters across the continents, but it recognized the Four Sages' efforts to stabilize Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind and recorded their merit. 273 275
