Government & Guardian Spirit
The city traditionally recognizes only individuals approved by Uxie as eligible to become Lord. Uxie represents willpower and is believed to grant determined people the resolve to perform good deeds; Mila’s recognition by Uxie earned her a reputation as the city’s most benevolent Lord 6.
Uxie’s strength is tied to the collective will of the city’s inhabitants. During the conflict with the Wizard organization, Aiven explained that both humans and Spirits contributed willpower to Uxie, leading Uxie to regard Spirits as part of the City of Ambition as well 261 310.
Following the Wizard crisis, Mila proposed that Aiven become Lord after he gained Uxie’s recognition. The council also established Aiven as President of the Spirit Alliance, beginning the city’s transition away from its former aristocratic order 310.
History
Gray Mist and the Gui Xu Beast Tide
The Gray Mist of Guixu Cave reappeared only five years after the previous beast tide, alarming the city’s nobles. The mist transforms Magical Beasts into violent monsters and drives them into human territory 6.
As Magical Beast migration intensified, Mila ordered preparations for battle. The city dispatched knights to frontier territories, authorized pre-emptive hunts of contaminated Magical Beasts, and relocated residents from vulnerable Black Forest settlements into temporary shelters within the city 65 81 87.
Aiven ultimately entered Guixu Cave and closed the Spirit World Passage responsible for spreading the Gray Mist and Ghost Magical Beasts. He defeated and freed the corrupted Night Demon Spirit guarding the passage, ending that outbreak at its source 304.
Conflict with Seaside City
Seaside City repeatedly sought to exploit the City of Ambition’s vulnerability during the Gui Xu Beast Tide. Its Lord, Kare, planned an invasion through the Black Forest, intending either to seize the city itself or occupy its southeastern territory 101.
Evidence of Seaside City Beast Gear found near Guixu Cave led the City of Ambition’s nobles to suspect Seaside involvement in the beast tide. Mila’s decision to make Aiven Border Count of the southeast was therefore understood as a defensive measure against a Seaside attack 143.
Seaside City’s Knight Order was defeated at Orange Fruit Village before it could enter the City of Ambition’s core territory. The loss halted Kare’s immediate expansion plans 194 223.
Wizard Organization Attack
After Kare was overthrown by a Wizard-backed rebellion, he revealed that the Wizards intended to use Seaside City’s forces to attack the City of Ambition and lure out Uxie. Their ultimate objective was the Guardian Spirit rather than territorial conquest alone 259 261 262.
The Wizards later attacked as Gray Mist and Ghost Magical Beasts spread through the region. The City of Ambition narrowly avoided disaster: Aiven drove away the mist, defeated the Wizards’ King-level Magical Beasts, commanded Uxie in battle, and helped seal Darkrai 301 304 310.
Spirit Alliance Era
After the crisis, the city formally began adopting the Spirit Alliance system. The Trainer system, Poké Balls, Spirit Centers, Spirit Breeding Houses, and Spirit-related industries became central to its development 310 331.
The city’s lords gradually entered the Spirit Alliance, surrendering portions of their former autonomy in exchange for development and official positions under the alliance’s rules 326 379.
Society & Reforms
Treatment of Spirits
Under the former system, Magical Beasts within the city were required to wear Beast Gear. Unrestrained Magical Beasts were driven out, and those seen in the streets were described as subdued and expressionless 162 164 310.
The Spirit Alliance introduced a different model based on Trainers, voluntary Spirit partnerships, and Spirit Breeding Areas. This system enabled commoners to gain qualifications and employment through cooperation with Spirits rather than traditional knighthood or Magical Beast capture 158 331.
Spirit Breeding Areas
Spirit Breeding Areas were established to provide Magical Beasts with food and safe habitats. The Iron Blood Fortress breeding area gathered Magical Beasts from Mount Ambition, preventing them from moving into the Black Forest and attacking human settlements during winter 320.
The result was a winter without the usual beast tide in territories near the Black Forest. Local lords recognized the arrangement as beneficial to both humans and Spirits 320.
Economy
The city’s old economy depended heavily on Magical Beast trading, particularly through Iron Blood Fortress and the Monster Merchant Association. The association controlled major supplies of grain, Fruits, potions, and captured Magical Beasts, allowing it to manipulate prices throughout the city 202 231 232.
After the Spirit Territory’s commercial conflict with the Monster Merchant Association and the takeover of Iron Blood Fortress, the city began shifting toward Spirit services, agriculture, fertilizer production, Trainer facilities, and Spirit Food processing 239 291 320 331.
- Agriculture — Spirit-assisted cultivation reclaimed wasteland and improved harvest prospects across the territory 368.
- Trainer system — Official Trainer assessments and Spirit Centers created new routes for commoners to gain status and employment 331.
- Infrastructure — New roads and trade routes connected the city with Seaside City, Meteorite City, and eventually other alliance territories 372 379.
Military
- City of Ambition Knight Order — Main defensive force against threats from the Black Forest, Mount Ambition, Seaside City, and the Wizard organization 65 309.
- Commander Kevin — Chief Knight and a leading military adviser to Mila; later oversaw the City of Ambition Knight Order’s northern deployment at Iron Blood Fortress 87 320.
- Guardian Knights — Defended the city during the Wizard organization’s assault and reported the battle to the council afterward 310.
- Trainer transition — The Knight Order increasingly adopted the Trainer system, allowing knights to partner with multiple Spirits rather than rely on Beast Gear and a single subdued Magical Beast 351.
Relationships
- Uxie — Guardian Spirit and source of the city’s traditional legitimacy; its power draws upon the collective will of humans and Spirits 6 310.
- Mila — Former Lord recognized by Uxie; guided the city through the Gui Xu Beast Tide and later nominated Aiven as her successor 6 87 310.
- Aiven — Border Count of the southeast, later recognized by Uxie and made President of the Spirit Alliance; led the city’s military defense and systemic reforms 143 310 331.
- Seaside City — Former hostile neighbor whose attempted invasions targeted the City of Ambition during periods of crisis; later incorporated into Aiven’s Spirit Territory 101 223 314.
- Iron Blood Fortress — Formerly an economically powerful but independent northern stronghold; later taken over by the City of Ambition Knight Order and converted toward Spirit services 202 291 320.
- Meteorite City — Brought under the City of Ambition after its Lord submitted to Aiven; its integration required coordination with Mila due to its political impact 352 354.
- Wizard Organization — Hostile faction that sought to weaken the city, manipulate Seaside City, and capture or lure out Uxie 261 287 301.
- Wise City — Allied city whose Lord Yana adopted the Spirit Alliance system after observing reforms in the City of Ambition 375 378 381.
