Background and History

Great Wolfdogs ordinarily lived on Sky Crown Mountain. A terrifying being drove one pack down through the Black Forest and into human territory. More than twenty Great Wolfdogs, accompanied by Earth Wolfdogs, attacked Orange Fruit Village, where Aiven’s Walking Grass defeated them with Sleep Powder and a combined Absorb Technique 59 60 61.

Aiven challenged the pack’s leader rather than immediately restraining it with Beast Gear. After his Ironclad Rhinoceros won the battle, the leader lowered its head in submission and accepted the gear. Because the pack followed its leader’s orders, Aiven could keep the group together and begin earning its trust 61 62 63.

The pack later moved to an abandoned orchard outside the village, away from the Glooms’ stench. When Tangela attacked, Peter fetched the Great Wolfdogs to reinforce the village’s Glooms. Their help improved relations with the villagers, and some Great Wolfdogs subsequently chose individual Trainers. Peter gained one Great Wolfdog’s approval and brought it home 65 67 68 69 70.

After gaining the villagers’ acceptance, the pack patrolled around Orange Fruit Village. Its members also carried riders and helped track enemies through the Black Forest 72 93 191.

Appearance

Great Wolfdogs are large, wolf-like Magical Beasts 179 401.

• Eyes: Aiven’s original pack leader has blood-red eyes 61.
• Size: After training, Aiven’s Great Wolfdog reaches nearly 1.5 metres in height and can carry him 179.
• Colouration: Hill’s Great Wolfdog has gray-and-white fur, briefly obscured by dark energy during its King-level surge 309.

Abilities and Skills

Scent Tracking

• Great Wolfdogs can detect human scent from ten miles away and may find people hiding in cellars 58.
• They use scent to detect threats, follow trails, and track fleeing opponents through the Black Forest 186 191.
• Movement that leaves no scent can break their trail; Matthew’s Great Wolfdog repeatedly loses a target using spatial movement 203.

Speed and Close Combat

• Great Wolfdogs can leap across large pits and advance quickly even over damaged ground 59.
• Documented moves include Surprise Attack, used for rapid strikes, and Howl Technique, which raises fighting spirit and attack power 83 92 248.
• Peter teaches his Great Wolfdog Sand Attack to give it a way to threaten an airborne opponent 186.

Limits

• Their keen noses make Gloom’s stench especially debilitating. Members of Aiven’s pack collapse after fighting near the Glooms 61 65 68.
• Sleep Powder and sustained stamina-draining attacks have also defeated Great Wolfdogs 60 186.

Relationships

• Aiven — Wins the original pack leader’s submission, feeds and trains the pack, and allows its members to choose whether to live with villagers. The leader remains loyal even after Aiven removes its Beast Gear 63 65 76.
• Peter — Earns the approval of a Great Wolfdog that once let him ride it. He becomes its Trainer and feeds it Spirit Food made from Tangela vines 69 70 86.
• Earth Wolfdogs — Accompany the original pack and follow its leader; they are described as smaller, gray, degenerate forms of Great Wolfdogs 59 61.
• Glooms — Fight alongside the pack to defend Orange Fruit Village, though their stench is difficult for Great Wolfdogs to endure 67 68 78.
• Hill — Rides and trusts a separate Great Wolfdog, his only surviving companion after losing two other Magical Beasts 186.
