Background and History

During the War of Investiture of the Gods, the Western Teachings sought to spread eastward while the Human Teachings and Heavenly Origin Sect moved against the Intercepting Sect. The conflict ultimately devastated Tongtian's sect, while the Western Teachings benefited by ferrying away three thousand worldly travelers and expanding its own foundation 1 80.

After Tongtian abandoned his Saint Position, Jieyin and Zhunti regarded his disappearance and rapid recovery as a growing threat. They dispatched disciples to investigate the East Sea, with Ksitigarbha assigned to search through the Netherworld under the pretext of supervising East Sea battle casualties and accumulating merit 14.

The sect's attention toward Tongtian intensified following his rescue of Yun Xiao and clashes with Ksitigarbha. Its forces investigated Golden Ao Island, the East Sea, the Dragon Clan, Longevity Mountain, and the Netherworld, while repeatedly attempting to determine Tongtian's cultivation, alliances, and connection to foreign demonic power 17 25 132 135.

Ksitigarbha, Medicine Buddha, Maitreya, and other Buddhist cultivators were deployed to uncover his whereabouts, evaluate his strength, and determine whether he could be recruited or eliminated 14 17 25.

Contest for the Netherworld

The Western Teachings expanded activity in the Underworld and attempted to establish a system of Buddhist control over Reincarnation. Maitreya's proposal at Fengdu Hall exposed this ambition, while Ksitigarbha's apparent involvement with a forged Witch Tribe seal caused a severe loss of prestige and undermined the sect's plans 31 39.

Failed Recruitment of Tongtian

Medicine Buddha offered Tongtian resources, vindication, intelligence, and protection in exchange for cooperation under Western leadership. Tongtian rejected the proposal, recognizing that the arrangement would absorb his lineage into the Western Teachings and leave the fate of his trapped disciples under Western control 49.

Alliance with the Heavenly Court

The Western Teachings secretly approached Haotian to jointly target Tongtian. In return for Buddhist assistance in stabilizing the four directions and eliminating Tongtian's remnants, the sect sought the Heavenly Court's aid in locating him and interfering with his external connections 59.
