Background and History

During the War of Investiture of the Gods, the Western Teachings sought to spread eastward while the Human Teachings and Heavenly Origin Sect moved against the Intercepting Sect. The conflict ultimately devastated Tongtian's sect, while the Western Teachings benefited by ferrying away three thousand worldly travelers and expanding its own foundation 1 80.

After Tongtian abandoned his Saint Position, Jieyin and Zhunti regarded his disappearance and rapid recovery as a growing threat. They dispatched disciples to investigate the East Sea, with Ksitigarbha assigned to search through the Netherworld under the pretext of supervising East Sea battle casualties and accumulating merit 14.

The sect's attention toward Tongtian intensified following his rescue of Yun Xiao and clashes with Ksitigarbha. Its forces investigated Golden Ao Island, the East Sea, the Dragon Clan, Longevity Mountain, and the Netherworld, while repeatedly attempting to determine Tongtian's cultivation, alliances, and connection to foreign demonic power 17 25 132 135.

Doctrine and Objectives

The Western Teachings publicly present themselves as protectors and liberators of sentient beings. Their representatives invoke compassion, purification, salvation, and the safety of the Great Desolation when seeking authority or cooperation 39 105 135.

Their actions also reveal broader institutional ambitions:

  • Spread Buddhist influence eastward and recruit or “convert” cultivators connected to the Intercepting Sect 1 80.
  • Bring Tongtian and his disciples into the Western Teachings, offering resources, status, intelligence, and eventual relief for the gods on the Investiture of the Gods 49.
  • Expand influence over the Netherworld through Maitreya's proposed “Buddha's Blessing to Reincarnation and Jointly Building Pure Lands of the Six Realms” 39.
  • Secure Dragon Clan destiny and investigate ancient Dragon Clan inheritances that may counter extraterrestrial demons 143 135.
  • Preserve the West's influence during the Otherworld expedition by emphasizing Buddhist Dharma's strengths in purification, transcendence, protection, and resistance to mental erosion 184.

Methods and Resources

Buddhist Purification

The sect's principal combat method is Buddhist light and purification Dharma, used against demonic qi, corrupted beings, and hostile spiritual influences.

  • Bodhisattvas, Arhats, and Vajras cast Buddhist light to purify demonic energy and transcend souls, though some early deployments prioritized merit accumulation and sample collection over frontline combat 5.
  • Medicine Buddha, Maitreya, and Ksitigarbha jointly activated the Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata Vow Merit Array to subdue a demon approaching Demon Lord level 110.
  • Medicine Buddha and Ksitigarbha deployed the Pure World Glazed Light Array against Crimson Eye Blade Demons on Flowing Fire Plain 114.
  • The sect's purification methods struggle against rapidly adapting Holy Blood Derivatives and the life-eroding power of the Withering Fungus Mother lineage 115 175.

Merit and Wish Power

Western Teachings techniques draw upon merit, fortune, and wish power.

  • A high-cost purification method can consume the user's Origin as well as the sect's accumulated merit and fortune, potentially damaging the user's foundation 110.
  • The sect's Quasi-Saint-level aura is distinguished by the profound weight and resilience of Western Teachings wish power 233.
  • The Eight Treasures Merit Pool provides resources for healing, purification, diplomacy, and the cultivation of Buddhist forces 14 105.

Investigation and Conversion

The sect combines religious outreach with covert intelligence gathering.

  • Ksitigarbha used Buddhist seals and chanting to probe the East Sea after being sent to locate Tongtian 17.
  • Maitreya questioned Zhen Yuanzi about Tongtian's presumed presence near Mount Wanshou and later participated in operations at Fengdu Hall 25 39.
  • Medicine Buddha used alliance proposals, fruit gatherings, and offers of assistance to probe Tongtian's background, the East Sea conflict, and Dragon Clan activities 49 135.
  • Golden Cicada attempted to use Buddhist power to examine Tongtian's Dao and thoughts after detecting suspected external demonic energy 132.

Relationships

  • Tongtian / Intercepting Sect — Primary rival. The sect pursued Tongtian after his fall from sainthood, sought to absorb him and his disciples, and later denounced him as having fallen into the Demonic Dao. Temporary cooperation against the Demonic Tribulation remained possible but distrust persisted 14 49 84 143.
  • Daoist Jieyin and Daoist Zhunti — Sect Masters who formulate the sect's strategy toward Tongtian, the Heavenly Court, the Netherworld, and the Otherworld expedition 14 143 184.
  • Heavenly Court — Secretly allied with the Western Teachings against Tongtian, particularly because of his attempts to contact the Investiture of the Gods. The alliance was founded on mutual convenience rather than trust 59.
  • Chan Teachings / Heavenly Origin Sect — Situational partners and rivals. Their representatives coordinated at times, but maintained distance and competing interests; later, both forces jointly defended against foreign threats 39 115 175.
  • Witch Tribe — Target of attempted influence in the Netherworld. The Western Teachings' plan to integrate Reincarnation was publicly discredited after Ksitigarbha was implicated in a forged Ancestor Witch seal scheme 31 39.
  • Dragon Clan — A contested source of destiny and ancient inheritances. Western forces opposed the Dragon Clan's ancestral worship and continued investigating its secret methods 143 146.
  • Alien Demons — Open enemies. The sect battles the Destruction Demon Eyes and Withering Fungus Mother lineages, though these threats expose limits in its purification methods 114 115 175.
  • Sea of Blood — Hostile and unstable neighbor. Western formations clash with Asura forces, while both sides suspect manipulation intended to provoke a wider conflict 227 229.

Story Role and Major Arcs

Search for Tongtian

Following Tongtian's abandonment of the Saint Position, Jieyin and Zhunti repeatedly ordered investigations into the East Sea. Ksitigarbha, Medicine Buddha, Maitreya, and other Buddhist cultivators were deployed to uncover his whereabouts, evaluate his strength, and determine whether he could be recruited or eliminated 14 17 25.

Contest for the Netherworld

The Western Teachings expanded activity in the Underworld and attempted to establish a system of Buddhist control over Reincarnation. Maitreya's proposal at Fengdu Hall exposed this ambition, while Ksitigarbha's apparent involvement with a forged Witch Tribe seal caused a severe loss of prestige and undermined the sect's plans 31 39.

Failed Recruitment of Tongtian

Medicine Buddha offered Tongtian resources, vindication, intelligence, and protection in exchange for cooperation under Western leadership. Tongtian rejected the proposal, recognizing that the arrangement would absorb his lineage into the Western Teachings and leave the fate of his trapped disciples under Western control 49.

Alliance with the Heavenly Court

The Western Teachings secretly approached Haotian to jointly target Tongtian. In return for Buddhist assistance in stabilizing the four directions and eliminating Tongtian's remnants, the sect sought the Heavenly Court's aid in locating him and interfering with his external connections 59.

Demonic Tribulation Operations

As demonic threats spread, the Western Teachings increased purification efforts, fielded formations, and offered nominal cooperation with Tongtian's anti-demon coalition. Its forces successfully contained individual threats but suffered serious casualties against organized alien demons and the power of Withering 84 110 114 115.

Otherworld Strategy

During preparations for the Otherworld expedition, Jieyin and Zhunti chose not to imitate Tongtian's path of conquest. Instead, they directed Western disciples to demonstrate protection and purification among peripheral tribes, particularly those oppressed by the Destruction Demon Eyes lineage, in order to establish an independent Western foothold 184.

Trivia

  • The sect's early involvement in demon battles was viewed with suspicion because some members appeared more focused on collecting demonic-energy samples and gaining merit than joining the core battlefield 5.
  • Tongtian repeatedly characterizes cooperation with the Western Teachings as dangerous because of their willingness to offer aid only under conditions that would subordinate his lineage 49.
  • The Western Teachings' lower ranks are described as vulnerable to Demonic Thought corruption; the Black Wind Arhat was identified as a manipulated puppet rather than clear evidence of direct involvement by the sect's highest leadership 246.
