Appearance
Lion has awakened in an unusually aged state for a Primarch. His appearance initially causes the Star Knights to question his identity, as historical expectations hold that Primarchs do not age. 148 149
- Towering, broad-built figure with the presence expected of a Primarch. 148
- White hair and a white beard; Kai derisively compares him to an old man near death. 148 199
- Initially appears in robes, unarmed and confused on the Badab Prime battlefield. 148 149
- Later recovers and carries his personal sword, Loyalty. 164
Personality
Lion is intensely analytical in war. He absorbs battlefield information at extraordinary speed, identifies enemy command failures, and prefers decisive, strategically sound solutions over costly displays of force. 150 202
Ten thousand years of absence and his aged condition have made him more patient and gentle than his historical reputation suggests, though he remains blunt, proud, and quick to show anger when his authority or soldiers are undermined. 150 153 194 He is also capable of acknowledging mistakes: after being saved from Kasan, he accepts Lu Jin's criticism and focuses on restoring the wider campaign. 180 181
His major weakness is interpersonal judgment. Lion initially trusts Inquisitor Sera despite warning signs, and his attempts at personnel management on Alert Star repeatedly create complications. 165 166 194 His relationship with the Fallen Angels is similarly burdened by guilt, mistrust, and unresolved memories of Caliban. 155 160
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Command Ability
Lion's primary strength is command rather than individual combat alone. He can process rapidly changing strategic conditions, exploit mistakes immediately, and force opponents into further errors through redeployment and timing. 150 202
- Tracks battlefield changes occurring roughly twenty times per second. 150
- Consolidates dispersed forces, redirects siege formations, and exploits weakened ritual nodes when enemy reinforcements teleport elsewhere. 150
- Can formulate large numbers of tactical options within seconds, even when Ork spore derivatives compromise Imperial communications. 202
- Maintains command during severe void-war disadvantages, though he acknowledges that strategy alone cannot fully compensate for overwhelming fleet inferiority. 202
- Sees Lu Jin's individual combat power as the ideal counterpart to his own command, particularly for decapitation strikes. 153 200
Primarch Combat Prowess
Lion is an elite close-combat fighter with exceptional speed, technique, and battlefield instincts.
- Defeated Chaos Space Marines bare-handed shortly after appearing on Badab Prime. 148
- Uses Loyalty with precise swordsmanship, inflicting dozens of deep wounds on a Greenskin Warlord within seconds before killing it. 173
- Can predict opponents' movements and withstand exchanges with Lu Jin, though Lu Jin's raw force eventually overwhelms him. 165 166
- Was outsped, disarmed, and severely wounded by the psionically enhanced Ork leader Kasan, demonstrating that stronger specialized foes can overcome him in direct combat. 180
Forest Traversal
After awakening, Lion manifests an unstable ability to cross immense distances by entering forests.
- First traversed from Kamas to Badab Prime after awakening. 164
- Can travel without a ship, Warp engine, or Webway access. 164
- Accidentally carried Lu Jin and ten Fallen Angels roughly 1,400 light-years to the Nacmund Corridor. 164
- The ability is involuntary and difficult to reproduce deliberately. 164 165
- Earlier traversals caused memory loss, leaving Lion unsure of his identity and destination after arriving on Badab Prime. 149 164
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Loyalty — Lion's personal sword, recovered after he awakens in the forest following his time on Kamas. 164
- Power armor — Ancient Dark Angels armor is associated with his Legion and the Fallen Angels, though Lion first appears on Badab Prime without his sword or recognizable wargear. 149 160
History
Awakening, Kamas, and Badab Prime
Lion's first recorded awakening after his long absence occurs on Kamas, where he helps local defenders and Fallen Angels resist Chaos warbands. He later enters a forest and is transported to Badab Prime, losing much of his memory in the process. 164 168
On Badab Prime, he appears as an aged, confused figure overlooking a multi-faction war. Although he cannot initially remember his past clearly, he rapidly analyzes the battlefield, identifies the Chaos ritual as the likely reason for the Alliance's dispersed attacks, and intervenes against the failing Star Knights siege. 148 He identifies himself as Lion El'Jonson to the Star Knights, but their distrust deepens when they see his aged appearance and lack of his sword. 149
Commanding the Badab Campaign
After meeting Lu Jin, Lion takes command of the Alliance's operation against the ritual nodes. His orders turn a fragmented campaign into a coordinated offensive, forcing Chaos defenders to abandon their former tactical patterns. 149 150
Lion assigns Lu Jin to infiltrate the Palace of Thorns, recognizing that Lu Jin's strength is best used against enemy command structures rather than in conventional line combat. 150 153 When Lu Jin, Krogar, and Lyleth become trapped in the Heart Eater Domain, Lion remains with the Alliance despite open distrust from several Chapter Masters. 155
Reconciliation with the Fallen Angels
Lu Jin brings Lion to the Hall of Honor aboard the Ragefang to meet Fallen Angels who have found refuge within the Alliance. Lion learns that the Dark Angels Legion was broken into Chapters and is confronted by Zabriel and others over Caliban, Luther, and the Legion's past. 160
Rather than deny the accusations, Lion swears that he never knowingly betrayed humanity or the Legion. He and the Fallen Angels subsequently attend the Alliance memorial ceremony together. 160
Sera and the Return to Kamas
Lion initially trusts Inquisitor Sera, believing him to be a benevolent ally who had agreed to arm Kamas. This trust places him in direct conflict with Lu Jin after Lu Jin discovers Xenos and Emagran imprisoned aboard Sera's ship. 165
Lion attacks Lu Jin under the belief that Lu Jin is acting as a butcher driven by personal hatred. After learning more of Sera's connection to rebellion against Guilliman, he accepts a temporary understanding with Lu Jin, but cannot prevent Lu Jin from executing Sera. 166
Lion then returns to Kamas with Lu Jin and discovers that more than two centuries have passed there during his absence. The world he once helped defend has become a slave society, while the Fallen Angels and militia who continued resisting died defending their sanctuary. 167 168
Vara and the Grey Prophet Conflict
Lion accompanies Lu Jin during the campaign on Vara, fighting Greenskin Warlords and defending civilians from the Grey Prophet cult. 173 174 He coordinates the defense of a church district while Lu Jin prepares to eliminate the Greenskin leader Kasan. 174
Kasan later infiltrates Lion's Aerial Fortress, overwhelms him in close combat, and nearly kills him. Lu Jin intervenes, allowing Lion to escape before killing Kasan. 180
Battle of Alert Star
Lion becomes the principal military commander during the Battle of Alert Star. He faces resistance from local authorities, Space Marine Chapters, and factions with competing priorities, but continues to coordinate the campaign alongside Lu Jin. 182 191
When Ork spore derivatives make Imperial communications visible to the enemy, Lion refuses to suspend command. Instead, he develops strategies despite the intelligence disadvantage and dispatches Lu Jin's decapitation team toward Saint's Port. 202
Relationships
- Lu Jin — Close ally and complementary military partner. Lion directs broad campaigns while Lu Jin destroys enemy command structures and major targets; their relationship survives violent disagreements over Sera and Imperial politics. 150 153 166 200
- Zabriel — Fallen Angel and spokesman for Lion's estranged sons. Zabriel challenges Lion over Caliban but later accepts his oath to humanity and the Legion. 160
- The Fallen Angels — Former Dark Angels whom Lion once viewed as traitors. Their reunion is tense, but Lion begins confronting the complexity of their history and their continued loyalty to justice. 155 160
- Roboute Guilliman — Primarch brother whose dissolution of the Legions enrages Lion; their relationship remains marked by old resentment and political disagreement. 160 212
- Inquisitor Sera — Initially trusted by Lion as an ally of Kamas. Lion later learns Sera was tied to a rebellion against Guilliman, though Lu Jin executes Sera before their conflict can be fully resolved. 165 166
- Kasan — Psionically powerful Greenskin leader who defeats Lion aboard the Aerial Fortress before Lu Jin intervenes and kills him. 180
- Emagran — Her imprisonment by Sera becomes the immediate cause of Lion's clash with Lu Jin. 165 166
