Background / History

In his previous life, Tang San was raised by Tang Lan, an Outer Sect Elder of the Tang Sect. Tang Lan named him, raised him to adulthood, and taught him hidden-weapon crafting. Later accusations claim that Tang San stole the Tang Sect’s secret manual; Tang San admits taking it but argues that he left behind three Buddha Fury Tang Lotuses and did not leak the sect’s information. 726 729 He also makes this defense during an earlier confrontation with Su Yan over his past-life conduct. 727

The Tang Sect’s division between Inner and Outer Sect disciples barred him from its core cultivation methods and advanced hidden weapons. Su Yan recounts that Tang San stole the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, was pursued by the sect’s Elders, and jumped from a cliff to demonstrate his loyalty and claimed innocence. After his apparent death, the Grand Elder declared that creating the Buddha Fury Tang Lotus outweighed his theft and posthumously admitted him to the Inner Sect. Tang San is distressed to learn that he could have been forgiven had he not jumped. 724 725

Tang San is a transmigrator whose soul and mental strength are unusually formidable. His cultivation method, the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, includes the Purple Demon Eye; he is also said to have devoured his original host’s soul after transmigrating. 62

The group’s reconstruction of his origins distinguishes soul-transmigrating possession from reincarnation with continuous memories. They conclude that the otherworldly Tang San arrived after the battle surrounding Ah Yin’s sacrifice, explaining why he does not remember that event. 107

Tang San grew up in Holy Soul Village under Tang Hao, whose despair following Ah Yin’s sacrifice left him neglectful and frequently drunk. Grandfather Jack nevertheless secured Tang San’s opportunity to attend Nuoding Academy. 107 236 237 Su Yan’s account further maintains that Tang Hao’s attitude changed sharply after Tang San revealed the Clear Sky Hammer, implying that Tang Hao recognized the body’s significance despite his earlier neglect. 107 108

During his later conflict with Su Yan over the Tang Sect inheritance, Tang San claims that he deliberately deposited the Medicine and Poison Chapters of the Tang Sect Secret Manual at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well as a test for worthy successors. Su Yan and Tang Ya dispute this justification on the grounds that Tang San had stolen the inheritance in his prior life. 712 722 726 727

At Shrek Academy, Tang San initially struggles with being overlooked while Su Yan receives widespread support. His jealousy and desire to be acknowledged by Xiao Wu repeatedly push him into reckless confrontations. 32 69 71

Su Yan’s presence changes Tang San’s early relationship with Xiao Wu. She initially lives in the regular girls’ dormitory rather than the Seventh Dormitory, leaving their bond weaker than in the original storyline. Tang San still likes her, but she prefers spending time with Su Yan and his mutated Martial Soul. 3 By the Nuoding Academy graduation period, Tang San blames Su Yan for Xiao Wu’s refusal to speak to him. 28

Following the Shrek group’s move to Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Tang San receives substantially better living conditions. With Qin Ming’s recommendation, the students and teachers are welcomed, and Tang San begins eating well, growing taller, and appreciating a peaceful life without constant harassment. 431 He later continues cultivating and researching hidden weapons there, receiving food, clothing, money, and instruction better than Yu Xiaogang’s. Although far below Su Yan’s group, he is still considered a talented student at the academy. 1092

This improved material life does not eliminate his loneliness. During Yu Xiaogang’s absence in Spirit City, Tang San feels abandoned by his teacher, father, and former companions; Flender pays him little attention after returning, and Dai Mubai and the others seldom visit. He also mourns the loss of his hoped-for relationship with Xiao Wu and feels unable even to miss a mother whose identity and appearance he does not know. 613 He subsequently imitates Su Yan’s former habits by cultivating on the back mountain until midnight, believing diligent training explains Su Yan’s rise. 892

After Yu Xiaogang returns, Tang San says that Tang Hao has not come to see him in over a year. Yu Xiaogang instructs him to continue cultivating at Heaven Dou Royal Academy while he seeks Tang Hao and returns to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan in support of their revenge plans. 1102

The story also depicts God King Tang San counterparts from the Douluo Dalu 2 and Douluo Dalu 3 worlds. Su Yan arranges confrontations involving both, including a proposed “Double Tang Conference,” while developments affecting the young Tang San do not necessarily describe the same counterpart or timeline. 951 955 1039 A broader plan involves assembling Tang Sans from five worlds; Angel God, Rakshasa God, and Life invoke this plan to stop Destruction from killing one of the God King counterparts. 944

Su Yan’s group later plans to send the young Tang San and Yu Xiaogang into the Douluo Dalu 2 world. Ye Lingling proposes having Tang San enter Shrek Academy and then be conscripted into the revived Spirit Hall’s forces against Evil Soul Masters. Su Yan approves, but the release location remains under discussion when Ye Lingling challenges his intention to use Shrek City. The chapter does not establish that Tang San has already joined either institution in that world. 1210

Personality

Tang San is proud, competitive, and highly unwilling to concede defeat. He endures severe injuries against Zhao Wuji rather than surrendering, driven largely by his need to prove himself to Xiao Wu and establish that he is not inferior to Su Yan. 71

He is also calculating and secretive. His use of poisoned hidden weapons earns him a reputation as a dangerous and unconventional fighter, while later revelations about his past-life research into the Buddha Fury Tang Lotus portray him as ambitious from a young age. 71 729 730

Tang San’s jealousy can make him hostile toward perceived rivals for Xiao Wu’s attention. He disparages Su Yan’s Little Monkey as a useless Martial Soul and is angered that Xiao Wu addresses the monkey with the intimate name “Xiao San.” 8

Defeats and humiliation strongly affect his confidence. His Blue Silver Grass being countered by fire, Soul Tools, and stronger opponents leaves him despondent until Yu Xiaogang reminds him of his Clear Sky Hammer. 313 315 317

Despite repeated setbacks, Tang San is intensely vengeful and resolves to repay humiliation once he possesses sufficient strength. After Destruction and Rong Nianbing force him to publicly support Su Yan’s campaign against Evil Soul Masters, he further vows to destroy the God Realm in the future. 444 484 717 He repeats this vow after another beating by Destruction, while the young Tang San separately swears revenge on Hu Liena and the women who beat and slap him. 951

He is also capable of preserving himself through deception. After enduring a beating from the Destruction Trio, he feigns unconsciousness to stop the assault while retaining his chance to take revenge later. 736

Tang San shows strong loyalty to Yu Xiaogang, begging Xiao Wu not to injure his teacher even while he is being pursued by Dugu Yan. 314 His Douluo Dalu 3 counterpart similarly responds to criticism of Tang Hao with threats, with the narration characterizing his attachment as blind loyalty and blind filial piety. 1019

His reserved habits contribute to his early lack of popularity: he spends his days working at the blacksmith shop and rarely greets other academy students, despite expecting his strength and talent to earn their support. 32 He is also relatively frugal, retaining twenty Gold Soul Coins despite hidden-weapon expenses and Flender’s extraction of his savings. 276

As God King, Tang San reacts violently to public criticism. When Xingluo City’s people condemn him over the continent’s decline and the spread of Evil Soul Masters, he spits blood in anger, vows to kill the critics, and blames Su Yan for turning them against him. 1143 He later regards Xuanzi’s offer to bring Shrek Academy into Spirit Hall as betrayal rather than accepting its stated purpose of protecting the continent. 1147

He is particularly defensive about the origin of his talent and inherited techniques. When Su Yan reveals that his Full Soul Power at awakening came from childhood cultivation of the Mysterious Heaven Skill, Tang San denies understanding the accusation and dismisses Su Yan’s success as luck and superior Martial Soul talent. His internal reaction nevertheless confirms that Su Yan has correctly identified the secret. 1187
