Background

Early life and Minato's team

Kakashi served under Minato Namikaze during his youth. By roughly age ten, the deaths of family members, friends, and teammates had left him emotionally numb and detached from the world. Minato took him on a mission to Rōran partly to give him a change of environment and help him recover. 483 484

Minato encouraged Kakashi to read novels as a way to address that numbness, casually giving him one of Jiraiya's books. This began Kakashi's long-running attachment to Icha Icha Paradise. 490
