Background and History

Principal Future Timeline

Trunks grows up in a world devastated by Androids 17 and 18. Gohan dies before Trunks’s journey into the past, leaving Trunks as his timeline’s last Saiyan. Years spent fleeing and fighting the Androids also leave him without proper martial arts instruction 409 424.

He travels in a Time-Space Shuttle to deliver medicine for Goku’s heart disease and warn the Z Fighters about the Androids. Expecting Frieza to reach Earth before Goku, he instead discovers a radically different history: Goku is already present, Bulma can fly, and Raditz and Nappa are alive. Bulma recognizes him because she has met a different future counterpart 405 406.

Bulma explains that he has reached another parallel timeline rather than his own past. Trunks initially loses hope when he learns that changing this world cannot repair his own. Gran then frightens him by threatening punishment for manipulating time, stops his attempted escape, and ultimately reveals that the threat was an act. He permits Trunks to remain because of his connection to Bulma 406 407 408.

Training with Goku and Defeating the Androids

At Bulma’s request, Goku takes Trunks into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with young Gohan. Two days outside provide two years of training inside. Although Trunks does not reach Super Saiyan 2, Goku’s instruction gives him the strength and technique needed to defeat the Androids 409 421.

Before his departure, Goku gives him approximately fifty Senzu Beans, while Bulma supplies food, clothing, and a warning about Zamas’s coming Human Zero Plan. Trunks promises to return in three years to check that their timeline survives its own Android crisis 421 422.

Back in West City, he cuts Android 17 apart and destroys the remains with a Kamehameha. He pursues Android 18 and kills her with the same technique, avenging Gohan as the survivors celebrate. He then reunites with his mother and explains that, although time travel could not rewrite their history, it gave him the power to change their future 423 424.

Contact with the Gods

Following the other Bulma’s instructions, Trunks and his mother use Gran’s dishes to attract Whis. Trunks warns the angel about Zamas and the danger posed by the life-link between Supreme Kais and Gods of Destruction. Whis initially shows little concern, but becomes interested after learning that Gran is a Saiyan candidate and Time Patrol member in another timeline 425 426 427.

Whis takes them to Beerus. The God of Destruction’s furious reaction to Zamas’s plot nearly destroys Trunks, who transforms and embraces his mother to protect her; Whis reverses time and restores him. Beerus subsequently excuses their time manipulation because they brought the warning 429.

After Gran arrives, he reveals that he has already destroyed Zamas. Before leaving, he encourages Beerus to guide Trunks. Kronoa then proposes appointing Trunks as Universe 7’s Candidate God of Destruction, and Trunks eagerly accepts the position 432 434 436.

Return Visit and Cell’s Elimination

Three years after his first visit, Trunks returns wearing a Candidate God of Destruction’s outfit. He reports reaching 15 billion Battle Power and nearing an understanding of Destruction Power. Despite this progress, Cell’s escalating strength makes him anxious even with Goku and Gran present; Gran attributes this fear to the lasting effects of his desperate upbringing 547 560.

During the visit, Trunks briefly wonders whether Goku caused the Android crisis by destroying the Red Ribbon Army. Bulma corrects him, explaining that the army would otherwise have conquered Earth, and Trunks follows the group with visible guilt 552.

After returning home, Trunks destroys the Cell embryo hidden in Dr. Gero’s research institute, searches the laboratory, and melts the surrounding mountain into lava. He then reports the other timeline’s events to Beerus and Whis. His account of Gran’s tournament and Universe 7’s improved Mortal Level Index prompts Beerus to pursue similar improvements in their own universe 573.

Other Timeline Counterparts

Counterpart Documented history
First alternate-future Trunks At fourteen, he and the still-living Gohan nearly die fighting the Androids before Gran rescues them. Gran restores them with Senzu Beans and trains them for five subjective years. They overwhelm Cell, force him to expel the Androids, and reveal their stronger transformations. After Gran leaves, Trunks pledges to protect Earth alongside Gohan 294 295 296 301 304 305 306 307 308.
GT Trunks Returns from a Time Patrol mission with Goku, Vegeta, and Pan. He helps identify Gran as a deity, joins the sparring match against him, and is knocked unconscious before reaching him. Kronoa restores him through Time Reversal. He later witnesses Gran overpower Demigra’s group 282 283 285 286 466.

Appearance

  • Principal Future Trunks: Purple hair parted down the middle, Capsule Corporation-branded clothing, and a large sword carried on his back 405.
  • Super Saiyan: His purple hair turns gold, and his expression becomes sharper 409.
  • Candidate attire: Whis changes him into clothing resembling Gran’s; he wears the God of Destruction-style outfit on his return visit 436 547.
  • First alternate-future counterpart: Has blue hair matching his mother’s. At fourteen, he barely reaches the younger Bulma’s shoulder 295 296.
  • Super Saiyan 3 counterpart: Develops long golden hair and loses his eyebrows during transformation 307.

Personality

Trunks is protective, grateful, and strongly attached to his mother. He worries about leaving her alone on Earth and insists that she accompany him when Whis offers passage to the God of Destruction Realm. He repeatedly thanks the people who help him and promises to work harder when Beerus and Whis acknowledge his progress 427 547 573.

Against the Androids, he is decisive rather than boastful. He refuses Android 18’s plea for mercy, invokes Gohan’s death, and finishes both enemies without allowing them another opportunity to threaten Earth. The narration contrasts Future Trunks with the recklessness common among other Saiyans 330 423 424.

His confidence remains vulnerable to the trauma of his ruined world. Learning that time travel cannot rewrite his history briefly overwhelms him, while Cell’s growing power later frightens him despite the presence of far stronger allies 406 560.

Abilities & Skills

Super Saiyan Transformations

  • The principal Future Trunks uses Super Saiyan but has not reached Super Saiyan 2 after Goku’s two-year training course 409 421.
  • Gran’s first alternate-future student reaches Super Saiyan 3; GT Trunks independently possesses the same transformation 285 307.
  • No later transformation is identified for the principal Future Trunks when he reports his 15 billion full-strength Battle Power 547.

Martial Arts and Swordsmanship

  • Goku’s instruction improves Trunks’s movement, technique, and combat judgment enough for him to evade Android 18 while continuing his attack on Android 17 421 423.
  • Uses a greatsword to dismember Android 17 before destroying the remains with an energy attack 423.
  • The first alternate-future counterpart develops First Stage Body Instinct under Gran; this achievement is not attributed to the principal Future Trunks 305.

Kamehameha and Energy Attacks

  • Learns the Kamehameha directly from Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber 424.
  • Uses it to completely destroy both Androids, preventing either from surviving their defeat 423 424.
  • Uses other energy blasts to eradicate his timeline’s Cell embryo and melt the mountain containing its laboratory 573.

Destruction Power Training

  • Studies as Beerus’s Candidate God of Destruction with guidance from Beerus and Whis 436 573.
  • Remains close to grasping Destruction Power at his latest documented appearance; actual mastery is not confirmed 547 573.

Equipment and Items

  • Greatsword — Carried on his back and used against Android 17 405 423.
  • Time-Space Shuttle — Capsule-stored vehicle used to travel between timelines. Gran can immobilize it with Space-Time Power 407 408.
  • Heart Disease Special Medicine — Brought for Goku, but unnecessary because Goku has already been cured through a Dragon Ball wish 406.
  • Senzu Beans — Receives approximately fifty from Goku before returning to fight the Androids 421 422.
  • Capsule Corporation supplies — Receives food, clothing, and necessities from Bulma, then another supply box from Tights. By the later visit, his Earth has largely been rebuilt 422 570.
  • Universe Travel Cube — Given by Whis and used to return to the God of Destruction Realm 573.
  • Time Ring — GT counterpart — Uses Time Realm travel alongside Vegeta, Goku, and Pan 287.

Relationships

  • Future Bulma — Mother and surviving family member. Trunks prioritizes her safety and brings her with him into the gods’ realm 424 427.
  • Vegeta — Father in his Future Timeline. The other timeline’s Vegeta is married to Tights, but nevertheless risks confronting Gran to protect Trunks 297 405 407.
  • Gohan — Beloved “Brother Gohan,” whose death Trunks avenges. In the first alternate future, Gohan survives and pledges to defend Earth alongside him 308 424.
  • Goku — Martial arts teacher and benefactor. Trunks credits Goku’s training with enabling him to save his world 421 424.
  • Bulma of Gran’s timeline — Protective alternate version of his mother, whom she asks him to call “Aunt Bulma.” Her supplies and advice lead him to Whis and eventually his candidacy 406 422 547.
  • Gran — Initially terrifies him over time manipulation, then indirectly redirects his future through warnings and a recommendation to Beerus. Personally trains a different future counterpart 304 408 427 434.
  • Beerus — Patron and supervising God of Destruction. His harsh criticism is intended to motivate Trunks rather than reflect genuine rejection of his qualifications 436 573.
  • Whis — Divine guide who restores Trunks after Beerus nearly destroys him, supports his training, and affirms his worth as a candidate 429 573.
  • Androids 17 and 18 — Enemies responsible for his world’s devastation. Trunks personally kills both after returning from Goku’s training 423 424.
