Background
Zhunti's true form is the Gengjin Bodhi. The Western lands were rendered barren after Demon Ancestor Luohu drained their spiritual energy; Zhunti would transform into his immense Bodhi Giant Tree form to shelter and protect the beings of the West. 53
At the Purple Cloud Palace, Zhunti and Saint Jieyin persuaded Daoist Hongyun to surrender his seat and pressured Kunpeng to do the same. The incident cost Kunpeng his opportunity and helped provoke the resentment that later led to Hongyun's death. 161 195
Zhunti later obtained an opportunity for sainthood at the Purple Cloud Palace, founded the Great Western Sect, and attained Sagehood through immense merit. His ascension was difficult: he made forty-eight great vows and borrowed merit from the Heavenly Dao to become a Sage. 62 1091
Appearance
Zhunti usually appears as a short, hunched Daoist with a withered or sallow face and twin topknots. His ordinary appearance sharply contrasts with his enormous combat forms. 53 775
- True form: An ancient, heaven-covering Gengjin Bodhi Giant Tree. 53 1091
- Golden Body / Heaven-Covering, Sun-Obscuring form: A colossal being with twenty-four heads and eighteen arms, each capable of wielding Dharma treasures. 60 613
- Combat manifestation: His Golden Body radiates overwhelming Buddha light and Saintly power. 613
Personality
Zhunti is intensely concerned with the West's survival and prosperity. The barrenness of his homeland drives his desire to collect capable followers, treasures, and allies for the Western Teachings; he sees powerful individuals such as Kong Xuan as opportunities to elevate the West's standing. 53 774 779
He is also proud, thin-skinned, and highly reactive to humiliation. Challenges to his status—especially being called the weakest Sage—regularly provoke rage, reckless threats, and a wavering Dao Heart. Repeated defeats by Nuwa and Sanqi, mockery from the Human Race, and the rankings' confirmation of his weakness all push him toward demonic tendencies. 38 823 1089
Zhunti frequently frames coercive recruitment as a person's “connection” or “affinity” with the West. This rhetoric is rejected by Kong Xuan and the Human Race leaders as manipulation intended to plunder Eastern talent and resources. 776 787
Abilities & Skills
Heaven-Covering, Sun-Obscuring Golden Body
Zhunti's Western Buddhist Golden Body—called the Heaven and Earth Manifestation in Eastern Xuanmen—is his gigantic twenty-four-headed, eighteen-armed battle form. 613
- Wields multiple Dharma treasures simultaneously through its eighteen arms. 60 62
- Its emergence floods the battlefield with Saintly pressure capable of disturbing Heaven and Earth. 613
- Failed to let Zhunti breach Saint Sanqi's Soul Scattering Red Sand defenses. 614
Western Buddhist Divine Abilities
Zhunti possesses a collection of large-scale Buddhist techniques that manifest worlds, sacred mountains, Buddha images, and overwhelming suppressive power. 63
- Great Sumeru Mountain — Manifests the former Western Dao Field as a vast Buddha-lit mountain; Sanqi destroyed it with ease. 614 615
- Three Thousand Great Worlds — Creates an illusory Great Thousand World through Buddhist light; Sanqi's Primordial Measure Heaven Ruler collapsed it. 616 617 618
- Thousand-Hand Buddha — A giant-hand technique ranked 93rd on the Divine Ability Ranking. 825
- Lion's Roar — A thunderous roar from one of his twenty-four heads that ripples through space and amplifies his Golden Body's aura. 621
- Palm Buddha Kingdom — His highest Buddhist achievement, forming a Buddha realm containing the Buddhas of past, present, and future along with innumerable Buddhist beings. It was broken by Nuwa and later dissolved by Sanqi. 63 622 623
Great Grade Heavenly Immortal Art
A Sage cultivation method created by Zhunti through comprehension of Heaven and Earth. It is described as containing Boundless Freedom, drawing upon Heaven and Earth's creation, and illuminating the mysteries of the sun and moon. 857
Equipment & Treasures
- Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree — Zhunti's signature ten-colored treasure, ranked 34th on the Magic Treasure Ranking. Its sweeping power can dissolve or brush away laws and attacks; it dispersed the Pangu phantom's Law of Strength and sealed Kong Xuan after she used the Five-Colored Divine Light. 602 778 791
- Six Roots Pure Bamboo — Ranked 50th on the Magic Treasure Ranking. Zhunti attempted to use its gray-hazed force against Sanqi, but it was devoured by mysterious black energy around her. 9 616
- Blessing Divine Pestle — Used to bombard Saint Sanqi's endless Soul Scattering Red Sand. 614
- Kasaya — A defensive treasure that hardened under attack and protected Zhunti from Suirenshi's black-hole strike. 800
- Other named Dharma treasures — Canopy of Tassels, Flower Crown and Fish Gut, and Dragon-Painting Spear. 60
Relationships
- Saint Jieyin — Senior brother, fellow Western Sage, and Zhunti's closest political ally. Jieyin repeatedly worries that Zhunti's humiliation and unstable Dao Heart will doom the West. 377 823 1089
- Empress Nuwa — Rival. Zhunti insulted her as the “weaker sex,” prompting her to cross into the West and defeat him despite his Golden Body and hidden techniques. 38 59 62
- Saint Sanqi — Overwhelming opponent and protector of the Human Race. Sanqi defeated Zhunti, broke his Palm Buddha Kingdom, injured him until he lost his Golden Body, and detained him for ransom. 612 619 623
- Kong Xuan — Intended recruit and prospective mount. Zhunti tried to force her into the Western Teachings by claiming she had an affinity with the West; he initially suppressed her but lost her when Suirenshi and Yanzishi rescued her. 776 779 800
- Suirenshi and Yanzishi — Human Race leaders who repeatedly defied, insulted, and fought Zhunti while protecting Kong Xuan and the Human Race. 786 787 803
- Sect Master Tongtian — Hostile fellow Sage. Tongtian openly mocks Zhunti and used a simplified Immortal Slaying Sword Formation to stop him from attacking Suirenshi. 212 812 814
- Daoist Randeng — Rival who enraged Zhunti by mocking his low artifact rankings and calling him the weakest Sage. 38
- Daoist Hongyun — Alongside Jieyin, Zhunti persuaded Hongyun to give up his Purple Cloud Palace seat, indirectly contributing to Kunpeng's resentment and Hongyun's eventual death. 161 195
Story Role / Major Arcs
Conflict with Empress Nuwa
Zhunti's derogatory remarks about Nuwa trigger their confrontation in the West. He reveals his Golden Body, deploys numerous Dharma treasures, and manifests the Palm Buddha Kingdom, but Nuwa's superior Dharma power and treasures suppress him and expose the weakness of his forced Sage ascension. 38 60 62 63
Interference in the Human–Demon Conflict
After dispersing the Pangu phantom's Law of Strength with the Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree, Zhunti enters the Human–Demon battlefield and declares that the Human Race deserves annihilation for offending a Sage. He easily repels the attacks of Huang and Ye Heavenly Emperors before Sanqi reveals herself as the Human Race's protector. 602 607 608 610
Defeat by Saint Sanqi
Zhunti escalates from his Golden Body and Great Sumeru Mountain to Three Thousand Great Worlds, Thousand-Hand Buddha, and Palm Buddha Kingdom, yet cannot overcome Sanqi's Soul Scattering Red Gourd and Primordial Measure Heaven Ruler. Sanqi ultimately breaks his ultimate technique, wounds him, and strips away his Golden Body. 614 618 622 623
Pursuit of Kong Xuan
Persuaded by Bai Ze's report and his own divination that Kong Xuan has a connection with the West, Zhunti attempts to recruit her. He survives her Five-Colored Divine Light, seals her with the Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree, and intends to refine her ability and make her his mount. Suirenshi and Yanzishi disrupt his plan and rescue Kong Xuan. 774 778 779 800
Renewed Conflict with the Human Race
Zhunti continues seeking Kong Xuan and threatening Human Race leaders, but restrains himself out of fear of provoking the Heavenly Machine Tower again. When he finally prepares to kill Suirenshi, Tongtian intervenes with the Immortal Slaying Sword and traps Zhunti's attacks within a simplified sword formation. 804 812 814
Collapse of Reputation
The rankings repeatedly identify Zhunti as physically weak for a Sage and eventually confirm him as the weakest Sage overall. These defeats and public humiliations destabilize his Dao Heart, place the future of the Western Teachings in doubt, and lead him to withdraw into cultivation. 377 823 1088 1380
