Background / History
Hermione grew up next door to Linley Belloc in London. Her parents are dentists, and she first befriends Linley after offering him dried fish for the stray cats he feeds; he gives her a lily in return. Their shared care for the cats develops into a close childhood friendship 1.
Before learning the truth about magic, Hermione experiences accidental magic and confides this to Linley after he frames it as “superpowers.” Believing his claim that an evil organization targets children like them, she agrees to care for his home and garden while he is away 4. She continues this responsibility throughout his first year at Hogwarts, visiting weekly to maintain the house and garden and wearing the Hogwarts pendant he sends her for Christmas 42.
Hermione receives her Hogwarts acceptance letter during the following summer. Initially terrified that Hogwarts is the “evil organization” Linley described, she confronts Severus Snape and demands to know what happened to Linley 87. After Linley apologizes for deceiving her, he introduces her to Diagon Alley, where she insists on buying her own supplies with her own money 89 91.
Appearance
Hermione is described as a girl with fluffy, bushy brown hair, pale skin, and notably white teeth 1. For the Yule Ball, she smooths her hair into an elegant updo and wears light violet-blue robes, leaving many students unable to recognize her at first 502.
- Usually carries large stacks of books and parchment.
- Often wears a miniature Hogwarts pendant containing drifting magical snow, a Christmas gift from Linley 42.
- Later keeps a ginger cat, Crookshanks 328.
Personality
Hermione is intelligent, determined, and deeply invested in learning. She studies beyond her year level, reads magical history for pleasure, and considers knowledge itself fascinating 196 209. Her academic dedication can make her strict with Harry and Ron, particularly when they avoid homework or break rules, but she gradually learns to balance discipline with concern for their happiness 101 261 414.
She is principled and dislikes being deceived or excluded from important matters. When she discovers Linley has been concealing his activities through impersonation, she agrees to help him only after insisting that he be honest with her 234 235. Her suspicion and sharp observation also make her effective at uncovering secrets.
Despite her bluntness, Hermione is compassionate and protective. She helps Neville search for his lost toad, worries about Harry’s safety, and defends the idea that wizards and Muggles are fundamentally alike 95 390 482.
