Background / History

Sect leadership and recruitment plans

Ning Fengzhi led the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect with Sword Douluo Chen Xin and Bone Douluo Gu Rong as its principal protectors. Chen Xin remembered his earlier leadership as wise and discerning, crediting him with bringing the sect greater prosperity and strength. His lifelong ambition was to transform it into the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect and place it beneath no other power 134 243 306.

After learning about the Imperial Fighting Team, Ning Fengzhi traced its members to Heaven Dou Royal Academy. He hoped to recruit Ye Qinghe and obtain the secret of martial soul evolution, potentially allowing his own and Ning Rongrong’s pagodas to evolve. He and Gu Rong were willing to consider a marriage alliance to secure him 134 135 145.

At the same time, he pursued Tang San for his hidden weapons, twin martial souls, and connection to Tang Hao. He intervened when Shrek faced Dugu Bo at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, despite previously telling Rongrong that she could leave Shrek if its conduct was as bad as she described 148 156.

Gu Rong’s injuries and hostility toward Spirit Hall

After Dugu Bo defeated Gu Rong, Ning Fengzhi used his pagoda’s healing and soul-power amplification to keep the wounded Douluo alive. Gu Rong’s account of Dugu Bo’s evolved martial soul and hundred-thousand-year ninth ring strengthened Ning Fengzhi’s interest in Ye Qinghe 156 157.

A black-robed woman subsequently ambushed Ning Fengzhi and Gu Rong while they were returning toward Heaven Dou City. Gu Rong pushed him clear of the initial attack; Ning Fengzhi suffered a broken arm in the fall. When the attacker mutilated Gu Rong to stop his escape, Ning Fengzhi agreed to kneel. Chen Xin arrived before he did so and rescued them, but Gu Rong permanently lost an eye and part of his right leg 163.

Ning Fengzhi blamed Spirit Hall and swore vengeance. Thereafter, Chen Xin accompanied him on almost every outing, while Gu Rong withdrew from public view 163 164.

Investment in Tang San

Ning Fengzhi regarded Tang San as a future counterweight to Bibi Dong. Beyond twin martial souls, he valued the Clear Sky Hammer, the Great Sumeru Hammer, hidden weapons, and the techniques associated with the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 159 195 200.

He arranged Rongrong’s marriage to Tang San without her consent, reversing an earlier promise not to interfere with her romantic choices. He rejected Chen Xin’s advice to support Ye Qinghe instead, deciding that Rongrong’s happiness could be sacrificed for the sect 157 195 197 204.

His confidence faltered when Tang San revealed that he had already attached a roughly seven-thousand-year Diamond Tiger ring to the Clear Sky Hammer. Ning Fengzhi angrily condemned the wasted ring slot, believing it would prevent Tang San from surpassing the Supreme Pontiff 211.

Schemes against Ye Qinghe and Xiao Wu

Ning Fengzhi increasingly viewed Ye Qinghe’s prospective sect as a threat to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect’s standing. His policy became explicit: if Ye Qinghe could not be recruited, he should be killed 185 188 190.

He and Tang Hao planned to expose Xiao Wu’s transformed-soul-beast identity to Spirit Hall, leaving her cornered and forcing her to sacrifice herself to Tang San. They also discussed having Spirit Hall eliminate Ye Qinghe, with Tang Hao acting personally if necessary. A later assassination plan involved Gu Rong and blaming Spirit Hall for Ye Qinghe’s death 195 232.

During the tournament, Ye Qinghe’s revelation of twin martial souls briefly overwhelmed Ning Fengzhi with regret. That regret soon returned to murderous hostility. Ning Fengzhi’s scheme against Xiao Wu was publicly exposed, and he admitted planning it with Tang Hao. Liu Erlong held him hostage while Dugu Bo blocked Chen Xin, preventing the sect from intervening; Xiao Wu ultimately sacrificed herself to Ye Qinghe instead 236 239 240.

Divinely bestowed children

Seeking another route to producing a powerful successor, Ning Fengzhi and Tang Hao extracted Yu Xiaogang’s account of his unusual conception, then kept him imprisoned. Tang Hao persuaded Ning Fengzhi to attempt conceiving a child together, arguing that their martial souls might produce a genius with twin martial souls or a Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda 217.

They agreed to divide single-martial-soul children according to their respective inheritances. A child with twin martial souls would bear the Tang surname, have a fabricated maternal history, and eventually marry into the sect’s direct lineage. Eleven “divinely bestowed children” were later housed in a nearby village under Tang Hao’s care; Ning Fengzhi visited every few days to cultivate their attachment to him 217 307.

Loss of the sect’s support

Following the tournament confrontation, Ning Fengzhi apologized to Dugu Bo and Liu Erlong and proposed a lifetime ban for Shrek’s teachers and students. Privately, however, he continued planning to eliminate Ye Qinghe through Gu Rong and obtain a hundred-thousand-year soul bone 243 245.

A massacre then killed 108 direct-line disciples, including all fourteen of Ning Fengzhi’s sons. Xue Ye suspected retaliation by Ye Qinghe’s father. Separately, Ye Qinghe had previously instructed Bibi Dong to target Ning Fengzhi’s sons without leaving proof that could be used against him 209 252 254.

When Ye Qinghe offered to exchange the captured Gu Rong for Tang San’s life, Ning Fengzhi refused and left Gu Rong behind. Chen Xin openly condemned the decision and withdrew from sect affairs except for defending against external invasion 263.

Rongrong’s return with a Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda further weakened her father’s position. Ning Fengzhi asked how her martial soul had evolved rather than first protecting her from Tang Hao and Tang San’s accusations. Chen Xin and several elders increasingly gravitated toward Rongrong, while Ning Fengzhi continued recruiting Shrek members and maintaining his alliance with the Tang family 269 270.

Deposition and final collapse

Five years after Gu Rong’s failed ambush, Ning Fengzhi discovered that Rongrong had won over the senior leadership. He attempted to welcome Ye Qinghe as his son-in-law and claimed that the Tang family had forced the original engagement upon him. Ye Qinghe rejected the claim and destroyed his soul power 306.

Rongrong declared that their bond had ended when he tried to force her into marriage. Ye Qinghe revealed that she had warned him about Gu Rong’s ambush and offered him the sect in exchange for help against her father 306.

Rongrong formally removed Ning Fengzhi as sect master, stripped him of the Ning surname, and expelled him. Chen Xin and most senior members recognized her leadership. Left without money or his Soul Tool, Ning Fengzhi set out for the children’s village, hoping to raise them into geniuses capable of restoring everything he had lost 307 310.

His remaining hopes collapsed when Da Yu’er and Xiao Yu’er told him that Ye Qinghe, Rongrong, and others had become gods. He descended completely into madness, continuing to proclaim himself sect master and curse those he believed had betrayed him 340.

Personality

Ning Fengzhi cultivated a courteous, refined public manner. He often presented himself as merely Rongrong’s father rather than an imposing sect master, winning goodwill from Shrek and several Imperial Fighting Team members. He could maintain a gentle smile even while privately furious 160 189 190.

His decisions were governed by recruitment value, sect interests, and resistance to Spirit Hall. He initially tried to retain access to both Ye Qinghe and Tang San, but his determination to preserve the sect’s supremacy turned an unsuccessful recruitment effort into repeated assassination schemes 146 157 185 195.

He was willing to sacrifice personal relationships for those ambitions: Rongrong became a marriage instrument, Gu Rong became expendable, and Shrek’s recruits remained useful to him even as potential breeding stock. His greatest emotional vulnerabilities were his investment in Tang San, his pride in the Ning lineage, and his authority over the sect 195 211 263 270 307.
