Background / History
Shoko first meets Kamo Mitsuki and Satoru Gojo as their examiner after a sparring match at a Three Great Families banquet. Although she suspects blood loss in Mitsuki and a possible concussion in Gojo, her Reverse Cursed Technique finds both healthy. She refuses a treatment fee because she has not performed any substantial healing 6 10.
The three remain in contact after the banquet. Mitsuki suggests that she train in hand-to-hand combat and use self-healing to relieve fatigue. Initially unwilling to endure strenuous training, Shoko instead develops a binding vow after becoming frustrated with her inability to beat Gojo 10.
She enters Tokyo Jujutsu High alongside Mitsuki, Gojo, and Suguru Geto under Masamichi Yaga. All four have already qualified as Grade 1 sorcerers, prompting Yaga to send them directly on a joint exorcism mission rather than begin with ordinary lessons 10.
Appearance
- Hair: Brown, falling smoothly over her shoulders 6.
- Eyes: Large and lustrous 6.
- Build and bearing: Delicate-looking despite her considerable physical strength 10.
- Clothing: Wears a Jujutsu High uniform as a student and a white doctor’s coat during medical work 23 31.
- Distinguishing feature: Develops dark circles under her eyes from the heavy workload caused by the shortage of sorcerers 15.
Personality
Shoko identifies primarily as a medic rather than a fighter. Her concern for others is practical and persistent: she tells Mitsuki to stay alive until she can reach him, shields Nanako and Mimiko during the hospital disaster, and thoroughly examines Geto even after he begins healing himself 10 11 61 115.
Her relaxed habits contrast with her professional conduct. Before imposing her binding vow, she habitually stays up late and sleeps until at least noon. Nevertheless, she maintains her composure when examining patients and refuses payment for treatment she considers unnecessary 6 10.
She frequently teases her classmates, particularly Gojo, and sometimes encourages their competitive impulses. She proposes the hand-to-hand contest between Jujutsu High’s “big three,” then bluntly rejects Gojo and Geto’s attempts to dispute Mitsuki’s victory 12 13. Her humor does not prevent her from challenging dangerous ideas: she warns Gojo against becoming a curse user when he proposes killing the higher-ups 32.
Abilities & Skills
Reverse Cursed Technique
Shoko possesses the rare ability to use Reverse Cursed Technique on other people as well as herself 6 10.
- Healing others: Rapidly heals Kento Nanami and Yu Haibara after their encounter with a cursed earth god 38.
- Self-healing: Can remove physical fatigue and repeatedly repair injuries; Yaga prohibits her from using it to bypass the fatigue of one training exercise 11 61.
- Anti-curse potential: The positive energy she produces is described as deadly poison to cursed spirits 111.
- Cursed-energy limit: Treating numerous earthquake victims nearly exhausts her reserves before the catfish cursed spirit attacks 61.
- Oxygen limitation: Healing cannot supply oxygen. She and the girls lose consciousness from oxygen deprivation despite her efforts to keep their bodies intact underground 61.
- Training goal: After witnessing Mitsuki and Gojo’s duel, she focuses on developing her healing until she can save anyone who still has a breath left 75.
Binding Vow and Physical Strength
Shoko strengthens her body through a binding vow rather than relying solely on strenuous physical training 10.
- Conditions: Automatically wakes after sunrise each morning and does not sleep before dark 10.
- Benefit: Each day’s leftover cursed energy becomes energy that strengthens her body 10.
- Combat applications: Can send Gojo flying with a punch, although she still cannot defeat him 10.
- Later assessment: Her physical strength is described as rivaling that granted by a Heavenly Restriction; she is not stated to possess one herself 111.
Medical Knowledge and Close Combat
Shoko combines enhanced strength with knowledge of human anatomy 18.
- Precision strikes: Knows which parts of the body are most effective to hit, making her attacks especially painful during the Goodwill Event 18.
- Examination: Checks Geto thoroughly after Kenjaku tears his cursed spirits from his body 115.
- Emergency improvisation: Uses a filing cabinet to distribute underground pressure, braces against the surrounding earth, and shields Nanako and Mimiko while continuously healing herself 61.
Instruction and Technical Insight
- Teaching limitation: Her intuitive explanation of Reverse Cursed Technique fails to help Gojo or Geto learn it during their student years 12.
- Technical curiosity: Asks whether Mitsuki’s ability to alter Geto’s taste perception could also allow him to grant Reverse Cursed Technique to others 12.
- Peer guidance: Exchanges insights with Geto after he independently awakens Reverse Cursed Technique, helping him rapidly improve his proficiency 115.
Equipment / Items
- Snowdance / Snow Dance: A stuffed-toy puppet given to Shoko by Mitsuki and named by her. Feeding it cursed energy identifies her as its owner and transforms it from a palm-sized toy into a full-sized Alaskan Malamute 15.
- Automatically attacks people or cursed spirits hostile to her and is programmed to remain within three meters of her 15.
- Can exorcise ordinary cursed spirits below Grade 2; against a Grade 1 spirit, Mitsuki expects it to buy her time 15.
- Runs on stored cursed energy, which limits the practicality of widespread deployment 15.
- Is dragged underground and destroyed by the catfish cursed spirit. Its destruction transmits information to Mitsuki, alerting him that Shoko may be in danger 60 61.
Relationships
- Kamo Mitsuki — Classmate and trusted comrade. His advice leads to her physical enhancement, and he gives her Snowdance. He acquires Reverse Cursed Technique by absorbing her blood and later heals her after the hospital rescue. Both explicitly frame their relationship as comradeship rather than romance 10 12 15 61.
- Satoru Gojo — Classmate and frequent target of her teasing. His behavior motivates her to become physically stronger. Beneath their banter, she worries about his injuries and his willingness to attack the higher-ups; he helps rescue her from the hospital disaster 10 27 32 60 61.
- Suguru Geto — Classmate, collaborator, and fellow caregiver to Nanako and Mimiko. He leads the underground search that saves her, and she later rushes to his aid after Kenjaku’s attack 43 60 61 111 115.
- Masamichi Yaga — Teacher who supervises her first-year missions and physical training 10 11.
- Nanako and Mimiko — Girls she helps care for alongside Geto. They accompany her on earthquake-relief work, survive the underground attack under her protection, and later join her barrier-node team 43 58 61 111.
- Kanon — Patient who comes to regard Shoko and the twins as her new family. Shoko treats her after Kenjaku’s removal and explains the truth about the curse user who had posed as Yuanyuan 111.
- Utahime Iori — Senior sorcerer whom Shoko helps rescue. Utahime embraces her upon seeing her, and Shoko offers to heal both Utahime and Mei Mei 18.
- Kento Nanami and Yu Haibara — Underclassmen she treats following their dangerous mission against a cursed earth god 38.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Missions and Goodwill Event
- Completes her first group mission with Mitsuki, Gojo, and Geto, then celebrates with them using their mission bonuses 10 11.
- Suggests a technique-free contest between the three men. After the gym collapses, she judges Mitsuki the winner, noting that he alone could spare a hand to protect her 12 13.
- Initially serves as medical support during the Goodwill Event. Her treatment allows the individual matches to begin a day early, and her own participation reveals her strength and anatomical precision 16 18.
- Joins the mission to rescue Utahime and Mei Mei from the haunted estate 18.
Star Plasma Vessel Mission
- Supports Mitsuki’s proposal to create a replacement vessel so Riko Amanai will not need to be sacrificed 20.
- Accompanies him to the Tombs of the Star Corridor but waits at the barrier entrance while he meets Tengen alone 21.
- Later tells Geto that Mitsuki has gone to help Gojo and relays the instruction that Geto should remain to protect their group 23.
- Witnesses Riko and Misato Kuroi’s relief after Geto reveals that assimilation is no longer necessary 24.
Reform Efforts and Caregiving
- Expresses interest in Mitsuki’s proposed nationwide barrier for gathering cursed spirits near Jujutsu High 33.
- Helps Geto care for Nanako and Mimiko, providing emotional support as they recover from losing their parents 43.
- Takes the girls to assist an understaffed hospital after an earthquake as representatives of the Time Vessel Association 58.
Hospital Disaster
- Faces a catfish cursed spirit after nearly exhausting her cursed energy on patients. Snowdance’s defeat lets her identify the spirit’s ability to drag targets underground 61.
- Takes shelter with Nanako and Mimiko inside a filing cabinet before they are pulled thirty meters below the surface. Her strength and repeated self-healing keep them from being immediately crushed 61.
- Is found and excavated by Geto’s cursed spirits. Gojo destroys the attacker, and Mitsuki heals the three survivors back to consciousness 60 61.
Silent Stone Island Duel
- Attends Mitsuki and Gojo’s duel as backup medical support and watches from the research base 67 69.
- Recognizes that their destructive power may exceed what she can remedy if they fail to heal themselves in time. Afterward, she chooses to prioritize her medical capabilities rather than frontline combat 69 75.
Super Barrier Crisis
- Leads one of Nagoya’s two barrier-node teams with Nanako, Mimiko, and Kanon 111.
- Orders the girls to hide when Leviathan emerges from Geto’s body, then rushes to check on him 111.
- Finds that Geto has independently awakened Reverse Cursed Technique. She examines him and exchanges healing insights with him 115.
- Returns to her own assigned area after Geto assures her that his situation is under control 116.
Notable Quotes
“I only hit hard when I’m punching you, okay? I’m a medic, not a battle maniac.” 10
“Not a single one of you is reliable. Mitsuki, remember, even if you get hurt, you absolutely must leave a breath and hold on until I come to save you.” 11
“All right, but I can promise to teach you, not that you’ll learn.” 12
Trivia
- Shoko explicitly says she does not like sweets when Gojo invites her to help spend Mitsuki’s winnings on dessert 6.
- Her healing at the Goodwill Event inadvertently earns the Kyoto students’ resentment: being restored quickly means facing Tokyo’s fighters again that same day 18.
- Her combat ability is often overlooked because her work at both Jujutsu High and the Time Vessel Association is primarily medical 111.
