Background / History
Tongtian is one of the Sanqing, born from Pangu's divided Primordial Spirit. Like Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun, he possesses latent fragments of Pangu's Law of Strength, though these fragments were bound beneath Heavenly Dao marks created through the Method of Severing Three Corpses 69 73.
During the struggle for the treasures of Treasure Distribution Cliff, Tongtian initially guarded the entrance on Laozi and Yuanshi's orders. Qing Xuan forced him to step aside, but treated him differently from his brothers, advising him to preserve his true heart and seek Fangzhang Island if necessary 39. Tongtian later allowed Qing Xuan access to the treasures he had discovered, earning Qing Xuan's approval 40.
After becoming a Saint through the establishment of Jiejiao, Tongtian began to question whether the Sanqing had chosen the wrong cultivation path. He discovered and refined Golden Ao Island in the East Sea, which was revealed to be his destined dojo, then sought Qing Xuan's counsel at Fangzhang Island 66 72.
Qing Xuan showed Tongtian that the Sanqing's true foundation lay in the Law of Strength rather than the Method of Severing Three Corpses. Under Qing Xuan's guidance, Tongtian began using his Array Law to remove the Heavenly Dao restraints from his Primordial Spirit 73. Yuanshi's attempt to force Tongtian back to Kunlun Mountain, followed by the sealing of Tongtian's disciples' cave mansion, prompted Tongtian to formally separate from his brothers and establish Biyou Palace on Golden Ao Island 74.
Personality
Tongtian is portrayed as comparatively courteous and open-minded among the Sanqing. He treats Qing Xuan respectfully even after attaining sainthood, and Qing Xuan notes that he lacks the airs displayed by Laozi and Yuanshi 69 72.
He values fairness in accepting disciples, opposing Yuanshi's emphasis on birth and foundation alone. After founding Jiejiao, he accepted beings of the Demon, Witch, and Human races so long as they sincerely pursued the Dao 71 74 105.
Tongtian is deeply affected by his bond with Laozi and Yuanshi. Though he recognizes that their paths have diverged, he struggles to sever their brotherhood and is repeatedly wounded by Laozi's perceived abandonment and Yuanshi's contempt for his disciples 74 76 148 149.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Treasure Distribution Cliff
Tongtian guards Treasure Distribution Cliff for Laozi and Yuanshi but yields to Qing Xuan under threat of the Hongmeng Liangtian Ruler. Qing Xuan subsequently singles him out as fundamentally different from his brothers 39 40.
Questioning the Sanqing's Path
After the Sanqing become Saints, Tongtian is the first brother seriously unsettled by Qing Xuan's claim that they abandoned Pangu's true Dao. He seeks Qing Xuan at Fangzhang Island to learn whether the Path of Proving Dao by Force remains possible 69 72.
Founding Biyou Palace
Yuanshi's actions against Tongtian's disciples force a decisive break with Kunlun Mountain. Tongtian founds Biyou Palace on Golden Ao Island, accepts disciples without discrimination, and receives the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation from Qing Xuan 74.
Cultivation in Chaos
With the Chaos Bead concealing him from the Heavenly Dao, Tongtian cultivates Sword Law and Array Law. After dispersing Hong Jun's incarnation, he leaves the Primordial World to cultivate in Chaos and swears to prove Dao Hunyuan through Sword and Formation 75 76.
Human Race Affairs
Tongtian supports the Human Race's development by recognizing Fu Xi as Human Emperor, assisting Lie Shan Shi's ascension as Earth Emperor, and sending Jiejiao disciples to aid Xuanyuan during the conflict with Chi You 139 140 161.
Investiture of the Gods
Tongtian recognizes that the coming Investiture of the Gods Tribulation targets both the Human Race and Jiejiao. At Purple Cloud Palace, Yuanshi's insults toward Jiejiao's disciples nearly provoke a confrontation between the brothers before Hong Jun intervenes 176 177.
Trivia

- He initially believed Golden Ao Island was unnecessary because Kunlun Mountain was still the shared home of the Sanqing 72.
- His establishment of Jiejiao contrasts with Yuanshi's selective disciple recruitment: Tongtian accepts those with genuine Dao hearts regardless of race or origin 74 105.
