Background

Qing Xuan was originally a person from later generations who transmigrated into the Primordial Era as the Innate Gourd Vine, one of the Ten Great Innate Spiritual Roots. Aware that his gourds were fated to be divided among great beings and that his vine would eventually be consumed by Nuwa’s creation of humanity, he sought form transformation to alter that fate 1 3.

After awakening sentience, Qing Xuan absorbed Innate Spiritual Qi, nurtured seven gourds evenly, and awakened eight Great Dao Laws: Dissolution, Space, Slaughter, Water-Fire, Summon, Gestation, Chaos, and Creation 1. He persuaded Nuwa to transplant him from Buzhou Mountain to Phoenix Perch Mountain, where she protected and nurtured him with Nine Heavens Breathing Soil, Three Lights Divine Water, and a trellis made from Tongtian Jianmu 1 3.

Qing Xuan cultivated an Outer Incarnation through Creation Power rather than immediately transforming his vulnerable main body. He later stored the Innate Gourd Vine inside his folding fan, allowing him to travel while keeping his true body protected 5 20.

History

Early cultivation and Fangzhang Island

Qing Xuan befriended Fu Xi by sharing the Innate Bagua and presenting his perceived fate as the reason for seeking the sibling pair’s protection 3 4. He and Nuwa later travelled the Primordial World, explored Buzhou Mountain, entered a spatial rift, and used the Purple-Black Chaos Gourd to absorb Chaos Gales and convert them into Innate Spiritual Qi 7 8.

While exploring the East Sea, Qing Xuan discovered and refined Fangzhang Island’s boundary tablet, becoming its master. He established the island as a secure dojo and later helped connect it with Penglai and Yingzhou Islands, forming the Overseas Three Immortal Islands’ Three Powers Formation 19 20 53.

Dragon Clan and Zixiao Palace

Qing Xuan arranged trials for eight Dragon Clan juniors seeking access to the Dragon Tomb. He guided them until they reached the Zenith Heaven Realm and could endure the Ancient Dragon Clan inheritance 25 44. Qing Xuan himself later accepted the Ancestral Dragon’s inheritance, gaining the Chaos Dragon Chapter and accepting responsibility for the Dragon Clan’s future revival 42.

At Zixiao Palace, Nuwa unsuccessfully requested that Hong Jun accept Qing Xuan and Fu Xi as disciples. Although Hong Jun refused due to the six-disciple limit, Nuwa secured the Twelve Petals Merit Golden Lotus and Green Lotus Precious Color Flag for Qing Xuan and Fu Xi 38.

Human Race affairs

Qing Xuan supported Nuwa’s study of the Primordial Ten Thousand Races and accompanied her on a tour intended to inspire the creation of humanity 17 54. He later protected the Human Race’s interests against attempts by the Sanqing and their disciples to seize its fortune or influence its development 90 126 130.

He founded the Human Temple, declaring that contributors to humanity would be honored there while its enemies would be imprisoned. Guangchengzi and Chijingzi were turned into stone statues within the temple after their schemes in the Huaxu Tribe were exposed 130.

Heavenly punishment and Pangu’s disciple

To complete his true transformation, Qing Xuan fused the Five Great Lotus Platforms with the Innate Gourd Vine using Three Lights Divine Water, creating a Thirty-Six Grade Creation Green Lotus 133. He endured the Nine-Nine Heavenly Punishment, including the final Heavenly Punishment Blood Lightning, by combining his lotus platform, physical cultivation, folding fan, Hongmeng Liangtian Ruler, and God Slaying Spear Shaft 135.

After Hong Jun attempted to eliminate him as a threat to the Heavenly Dao, Pangu appeared and identified Qing Xuan as his chosen successor. Pangu accepted him as a personal disciple, transferred power to him, and instructed him to seek the Great Dao Realm if possible 138.

Personality

Qing Xuan is strongly driven by self-preservation, but his survival strategies are usually long-term and calculated rather than reckless. He befriended Fu Xi, sought Nuwa’s protection, founded Fangzhang Island, and cultivated alliances with the Dragon Clan, Witch Clan, Human Race, and Tongtian to avoid the predetermined destruction of his main body 3 17 25 40.

He is willing to take major risks when they offer a path beyond his original fate, including using all eight gourds during his primordial spirit fusion and later facing the Nine-Nine Heavenly Punishment in his true body 5 133. He also refuses opportunities he believes would harm others, such as taking Pangu Marrow at the cost of an Ancestral Witch’s chance to gain a Primordial Spirit 10.

Following three hundred years of karmic fire tempering, Qing Xuan becomes notably more composed and less impulsive 107.

Abilities & Skills

Innate Gourd Vine and Eight Laws

Qing Xuan’s seven gourds and main vine grant him affinity with eight distinct Great Dao Laws 1.

  • Crimson Dissolution Law — releases dissolution power; the Purple-Red Gourd can produce red sand capable of dissolving physical bodies 1 88.
  • Golden Space Law — allows spatial storage; the Purple-Gold Gourd is used to collect Innate Spiritual Roots 1 7.
  • White Slaughter Law — one of the seven gourd-derived laws 1.
  • Yellow Water-Fire Law — one of the seven gourd-derived laws 1.
  • Azure Summon Law — contained in the Purple-Green Gourd, which holds a summoning banner 1 6.
  • Green Gestation Law — one of the seven gourd-derived laws 1.
  • Black Chaos Law — the Purple-Black Chaos Gourd absorbs Chaos Gales, Chaos Qi, and Chaos-derived sword qi before converting them into Innate Spiritual Qi 1 8 88.
  • Seven-Colored Creation Law — originates from Qing Xuan’s Innate Gourd Vine body and is central to his cultivation, transformations, and refinement methods 1 19.

Outer Incarnation and main-body transformation

Qing Xuan initially formed a physical Outer Incarnation with Creation Power while his true body remained rooted and vulnerable 5 6.

  • His folding fan can contain and nurture the Innate Gourd Vine, allowing him to carry his main body safely 20 50.
  • He eventually merges with the vine and takes form through his true body rather than merely an incarnation 133.
  • His transformation triggers the Nine-Nine Heavenly Punishment because a top-grade Innate Spiritual Root taking form defies the Heavenly Dao 50 133.

Three Flowers and Law cultivation

Qing Xuan’s cultivation differs from conventional practitioners because he uses different Great Dao Laws for each of his Heaven, Earth, and Man Flowers 68.

  • The Innate Enlightenment Tea Tree’s Law Sword raises his Three Flowers from nine to twelve petals and allows him to determine his path toward the Primordial Chaos Golden Immortal Realm 50.
  • His unique approach permits simultaneous use of several Great Dao Laws, though he later recognizes the importance of bringing individual Laws to mastery 68.
  • He condenses Dao Artifacts for his Three Flowers during his advancement toward the Peak Golden Immortal of the Origin 68.

Physical cultivation

Qing Xuan cultivates the Nine Revolutions Primordial Art and uses heavenly punishment to temper his body 135.

  • He defeats the nine Purple Thunder Divine Dragons of the Eighth Heavenly Punishment through his physical body and Eight Revolutions Consummation 135.
  • His physical cultivation remains limited before reaching the Ninth Revolution, leaving the final tribulation highly dangerous 135.

Lotus Platform fusion

Qing Xuan gathers the Five Great Lotus Platforms—Creation, World Destroying, Karma, Pure World, and Merit—to form an Innate Five Elements Lotus Array 133.

  • The fusion produces a Thirty-Six Grade Creation Green Lotus 133.
  • The formation is stated to resist most of the Nine-Nine Heavenly Punishment’s force 133.
  • The Thirty-Six Grade Creation Green Lotus ultimately halts and destroys the Heavenly Dao Grinding Disc, though its petals are expended in the process 137.

Human Race Power of Faith

Qing Xuan recognizes the Power of Faith as more valuable than mere Human Race fortune 90.

  • Power generated through humanity’s genuine respect and belief can sharply raise his cultivation 90.
  • He uses the Human Race’s faith to empower himself and Nuwa against the Sanqing and escape the Immortal Slaying Formation 89 90.
  • He warns that harming the Human Race would create consequences severe enough to deter the Saints 89.

Teaching and strategic insight

Qing Xuan frequently uses knowledge of future possibilities and the Primordial World’s larger structure to guide allies 17 81.

  • He shares the Innate Bagua with Fu Xi and discusses it with him for forty-nine years 3 4.
  • He modifies the One Qi Incarnation method by splitting the Primordial Spirit directly and using Three Lights Divine Water to restore the original spirit 36.
  • He teaches Tongtian how to uncover suppressed fragments of the Law of Strength in his Primordial Spirit 73.
  • He identifies the six necessary paths of the Primordial World: Heavenly, Earth, Human, Demon, Devil, and Buddha 81.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Folding Fan — Qing Xuan’s companion treasure; its exact grade is unknown, though Fu Xi judges it to be above a Supreme Grade Innate Spiritual Treasure. It stores Qing Xuan’s main body, nurtures spiritual roots, records scenes, and can amplify the Hongmeng Liangtian Ruler 6 20 50 89.
  • Seven Innate Gourds — mature gourds containing complete Laws; normally concealed as fan pendants 6 8.
  • Hongmeng Liangtian Ruler — Merit Supreme Treasure bearing a Pangu Imprint that can suppress or deter the Sanqing 25 89.
  • Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud — contains Heaven Opening Merit and Pure Qi; used as a high-level defense and refinement target 41 89.
  • Five Great Lotus Platforms — Creation Green Lotus, World Destroying Black Lotus, Karma Red Lotus, Pure World White Lotus, and Merit Golden Lotus; fused during Qing Xuan’s main-body transformation 130 133.
  • Eight Treasures Glazed Cup — an Innate Spiritual Treasure found beneath the Twenty-Four Grade Creation Green Lotus, used to gather Three Lights Divine Water 12.
  • God Slaying Spear Shaft — a remnant of the God Slaying Spear used alongside Qing Xuan’s other treasures during the final heavenly punishment 57 135.

Relationships

  • Yuanshi Tianzun — Hostile rival. Qing Xuan repeatedly clashes with Yuanshi over the Human Race and ultimately punishes him after establishing the Human Temple 89 130.

Trivia

  • Qing Xuan strongly dislikes being called “Little Gourd Vine,” but Nuwa and Houtu continue using the nickname 6 12.

  • The second flowering of his Innate Gourd Vine produces spiritual fruits far weaker than the original seven innate gourds 50.
  • Qing Xuan initially regards his folding fan as a possible “Golden Finger,” but cannot determine its true origin or complete functions 6.
