Background
While still young, Garp operated in the first half of the Grand Line alongside Sengoku and Tsuru. Having helped clear out most of Paradise’s stronger pirates, he was intensely confident in his fists and initially believed he could handle Rocks despite the latter’s one-billion-berry bounty. 7
During the Navy’s disguised reconnaissance mission to Hachinosu Island, Garp’s impatience and loose talk exposed the group’s identities to tavern owner Patri Vic. Sengoku ordered him to remain behind and watch Vic, leading to an hour-long spar in which Garp comfortably held the upper hand without using his full strength. 8 9
After Vic joined the Rocks Pirates, Garp regarded his former sparring partner as a pirate who had “fallen into darkness.” He repeatedly attempted to recruit Vic into the Navy before fighting him, but Vic refused the Navy’s restrictions and chose piracy instead. 23 24
Following the Dorama Kingdom campaign, Garp was offered an Admiral position alongside Sengoku. He rejected it outright, unwilling to become a Celestial Dragon bodyguard or accept the office’s restrictions and administrative burden. 66
Appearance
Garp is a powerfully built Marine with sturdy, heavily muscled arms and a broad, confident grin. He commonly wears a Navy Justice cape, though he discards it—and even his shirt—when preparing for serious combat. 7 24 97
- Prominent muscular physique, frequently emphasized during battle. 7 97
- White-toothed grin and loud laughter. 7
- Navy Justice cape and formal tie while on duty. 24 97
- His body can be fully covered in dense black Armament Haki. 100
Personality
Garp is hot-blooded, impulsive, and eager to fight powerful pirates. He dislikes reconnaissance work and restraint, often creating problems for Sengoku and Tsuru through carelessness, but he never backs down when danger appears. 7 8
Despite his bluntness, Garp is deeply loyal to his comrades. Sengoku is one of his closest friends, and Garp immediately abandoned his fight with Whitebeard to aid Sengoku after Vic severely injured him. 66
He values personal freedom over rank or prestige. His refusal to become an Admiral stems from his dislike of serving the Celestial Dragons and his refusal to be bound by the position’s responsibilities. 61 66
Garp also has a casual, comedic side: he snacks during serious discussions, asks Sengoku for senbei, and is prone to loud laughter even in formal settings. 7 202
