Background / History
Founding the Rocks Pirates
Rocks formed the Rocks Pirates on Hachinosu and assembled powerful pirates from across the seas, including Edward Newgate, Shiki, Charlotte Linlin, John, Wang Zhi, and Silver Axe. He personally had Golden Lion approach Patri Vic because of Vic's connection to Whitebeard, whom Rocks considered unusually dependable compared with crewmates driven solely by profit 4 7.
His authority rested on overwhelming strength. Rocks suppressed his officers through terrifying Conqueror's Haki and enforced a rule against executives killing one another; offenders would be executed personally. He was unconcerned with the deaths of apprentices and ordinary crew, but regarded strong executives as necessary assets for conquering the world 15 21.
War against the World Government
Rocks openly declared his intention to overthrow the World Government and rule the world. His crew attacked World Government member states, cut off a captured nation's communications to prevent naval intervention, and later destroyed it after more than a month in hiding 13 20.
During the Menglas campaign, Rocks admitted to killing a Celestial Dragon and personally beheaded a Navy Admiral. Although the Rocks Pirates suffered heavy losses among their lower-ranked members, Rocks treated those casualties as replaceable while preserving his cadres 24 26.
Search for Uranus
Rocks recruited Ohara scholar Bannock Mogs to locate the Ancient Weapons, then directed his crew to gather Poneglyphs connected to Uranus. After the crew obtained five relevant Poneglyphs, he assigned Oden—the only member capable of reading them—to decipher Uranus's final route 67 87.
Oden identified God Valley as Uranus's location. Rocks returned to Hachinosu, retrieved an Eternal Pointer to God Valley from a treasure chest he had hidden there, and revealed that he had acquired it after attacking a Celestial Dragon fleet over a decade earlier 89 91.
God Valley and Death
At God Valley, Rocks prioritized Uranus over the island's treasure and interrogated Celestial Dragons for its location, killing those who could not answer. The Navy, Roger Pirates, and Giant Pirates converged on the island to stop him 94.
Rocks discovered that Vic and Whitebeard intended to oppose him. Vic believed Rocks would eliminate any subordinate capable of threatening his rule after obtaining Uranus, while Whitebeard exposed that Rocks had secretly stolen money sent to Whitebeard's impoverished hometown 115.
Rocks fought Vic alone while Whitebeard held off loyal cadres. After exhausting his Darkness-Darkness Fruit through an extended battle, Rocks was overwhelmed by Vic's Sage Art Wood Release: True Thousand-Armed Buddha and left mortally wounded in a crater 120 127 129. His final request was burial on Hachinosu; Vic honored it despite having killed him 130 142.
Appearance
Rocks is a tall man, though not as physically massive as Whitebeard. He is seen wearing a black robe and wielding a black longsword, with his presence described as oppressive enough to make even Vic uneasy 20 58 123.
- Wore a black robe when confronting Roger 58
- Carried a black longsword in battle against Vic 123
- Projected an aura of royalty while seated on the underground throne at God Valley 114 115
- Could intimidate his own officers into submission with Conqueror's Haki 15
Personality
Rocks was driven by a singular ambition: obtaining Uranus, overthrowing the World Government, and ruling the world. He saw wealth, territory, powerful subordinates, and even Ancient Weapons as means toward that goal 13 67 89.
He was ruthlessly pragmatic. Rocks massacred weak pirates on Hachinosu, killed Celestial Dragons during his search for Uranus, and regarded ordinary crew losses as easily replaceable 26 90 94. He also stole funds intended for Whitebeard's hometown, believing the money was more useful as his own treasure 115.
Despite this cruelty, Rocks understood the value of capable people. He protected Vic from hostile executives, wanted to groom him into an executive, trusted Oden to decipher the Poneglyphs, and prioritized the escape of his surviving officers during a Navy pursuit 21 49 87. His possessiveness ultimately undermined those relationships: his strongest subordinates concluded that he would eliminate them once his rule was secure 89 115.
Abilities & Skills
Darkness-Darkness Fruit
Rocks possessed the Darkness-Darkness Fruit, a Logia-type Devil Fruit he kept hidden for years by ensuring that anyone who learned of it was dead. He developed its power to an exceptional level, allowing him to turn parts of his body into black mist and evade otherwise fatal attacks 118.
- Elementalization — Turned his body into black mist to avoid damage, including Vic's attempt to impale him with God Slasher 117 118.
- Damage absorption and nullification — Used darkness to absorb Vic's flames, lightning, Haki-infused sword strikes, and Demon Sword curse, though doing so heavily taxed his stamina 124 126.
- Dark Claw — Formed black-mist hands from the ground to seize Vic's feet and restrict his movement 123.
- Black Dragon — Summoned a dragon made of darkness to clash with Vic's Wood Dragon Technique 124.
- Mist constructs — Created a black-mist duplicate with power comparable to his own; later produced additional weaker duplicates, each estimated at half his peak strength 126 128.
- Limitations — Repeatedly nullifying attacks consumed enormous stamina and burdened his body. The fruit also caused him to endure amplified pain when struck 122 126 129.
Haki and Swordsmanship
Rocks was an elite swordsman whose Armament Haki and sword intent could injure the Fleet Admiral through a full-body Haki defense 48.
- Conqueror's Haki — Pressured his officers into submission and maintained discipline among the crew's strongest members 15.
- Armament Haki — Matched the Fleet Admiral in high-level Haki clashes and reinforced his sword strikes with destructive force 46 48.
- Observation Haki — Detected Navy forces watching his battle with Vic from afar 126.
- Swordsmanship — Sent devastating Sword Qi at the Fleet Admiral and fought Vic evenly in prolonged blade clashes 48 121.
Combat Endurance
Rocks endured a prolonged battle against Vic's ice, fire, lightning, Wood Release, Sage Arts, and Demon Sword-enhanced attacks. He continued fighting after being trapped in ice and water prisons, burned by Sage Art Five Fire God Flame Fan, and pressured by Vic's Thousand-Armed Buddha 119 123 124 129.
Equipment / Items
- Black longsword — Rocks' primary weapon during his duel with Vic 123.
- Eternal Pointer to God Valley — Hidden in a treasure chest beneath Hachinosu for over a decade; used to lead the Rocks Pirates to God Valley 91.
- Demon Sword God Slasher — Briefly seized from Vic during their battle, but failed to control its will and discarded it 118.
Relationships
- Patri Vic — Initially valued as Whitebeard's friend and later treated as Rocks' most important subordinate. Rocks protected Vic from hostile executives, but Vic betrayed and ultimately killed him after concluding Rocks would never tolerate a rival to his rule 4 21 115 130.
- Whitebeard (Edward Newgate) — A highly valued officer whom Rocks believed would remain loyal. Their relationship collapsed after Whitebeard discovered Rocks had arranged thefts from his hometown; Whitebeard sided with Vic at God Valley 4 115.
- Golden Lion Shiki — Trusted executive and recruiter. Rocks sought Shiki's aid against Vic and Whitebeard, but Shiki refused to choose a side and left to search for Uranus himself 4 120.
- Oden — Recruited samurai and the crew's sole Poneglyph reader. Rocks entrusted him with deciphering Uranus's route, and Oden's work revealed God Valley as the destination 70 87 89.
- Gol D. Roger — A pirate Rocks attempted to recruit by offering immediate officer status. Roger refused, leading Rocks to order an attack on the Roger Pirates 58 59.
- World Government and Navy — Rocks' principal enemies. He openly declared his intent to overthrow the World Government, attacked its member states, killed a Navy Admiral, and forced the Navy into an alliance with the Roger and Giant Pirates at God Valley 13 26 94.
