Background / History

The Uchiha Clan traces its lineage to Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths. The clan’s Sharingan represents Yin Release chakra, while the Senju and Uzumaki clans inherited the corresponding Sage Body. The Diary further reveals that the Sharingan evolved from the Byakugan and can, at its highest known stage, evolve into the Rinnegan 285 294.

Uchiha Madara and Senju Hashirama established Konohagakure together. Madara later broke with Hashirama over the village’s leadership and direction, leaving the Uchiha tied to Konoha’s foundation while also becoming politically suspect within it 49 211. Historical clan records further establish that the Uchiha ultimately accepted the village’s founding only after being unable to overcome the Senju Clan and Hashirama in the Warring States Period 249.

Unlike the Hyuga Clan, the Uchiha historically intermarried with outsiders. This allowed diluted Uchiha bloodlines to exist beyond the clan surname; rare descendants who awakened the Sharingan would ordinarily be brought back into the clan 10 104 191. The clan did not tolerate its bloodline remaining outside its control, and an awakened descendant could be pressured to acknowledge the clan or face coercive consequences 389.

After the Nine-Tails Rampage, a Sharingan-wielding Uchiha known as Uchiha Tobi was implicated in the attack. The clan was subsequently isolated, relocated to Konoha’s outskirts, and distrusted by Konoha, while some members began preparing a coup 113 220 221. Later revelations establish that “Uchiha Tobi” was Obito Uchiha, who had survived his presumed death and was acting under Uchiha Madara’s influence 392 393.

Uchiha Shisui attempted to prevent the rebellion by using Kotoamatsukami on Uchiha Fugaku, but Shimura Danzō stole one of Shisui’s eyes. Shisui entrusted his remaining eye to Itachi before his death 133 134. The failed intervention removed a potential route for reconciliation, while longstanding hostility, public suspicion, and political manipulation drove the village and clan toward an irreconcilable conflict 374 394.

The clan was later massacred. Available information identifies Uchiha Itachi, Danzō’s Root, and Obito Uchiha—then operating as Uchiha Tobi and claiming the name Madara—as parties connected to the extermination; Danzō subsequently implanted numerous stolen Sharingan into his arm 50 52 392. Sasuke eventually learns that Itachi acted under pressure from Konoha’s higher-ups, choosing the village over the clan 220.

In the altered present timeline, Sasuke’s success during the Chūnin Exams and Kaede’s public emergence as a suspected Mangekyō Uchiha begin restoring the clan’s social standing. Former affiliated minor clans and old associates resume contact with Sasuke, seeing the surviving bloodline as a potential revival of Uchiha influence within Konoha 443 444.

Clan Traits

The Uchiha are widely regarded as a naturally gifted combat clan. Those who awaken the Sharingan commonly excel in ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu, with the Copy Eye allowing techniques that normally require years of training to be replicated rapidly 208.

The clan is associated with pride, arrogance, and a confrontational temperament. However, its members genuinely respect those who demonstrate superior strength, including the Legendary Sannin 233. Their internal arrogance and inability to gain Konoha’s full trust are both identified as factors in the clan’s downfall 319.

The clan’s long history against the Senju made Uchiha genjutsu particularly notorious. Even an Uchiha with ordinary innate genjutsu talent can reach a high level quickly after awakening the Sharingan, compelling the Senju Clan to develop extensive anti-genjutsu methods over centuries of warfare 353.

The clan historically possessed its own network of vassal and affiliated minor clans, comparable to the Senju Clan’s political network within Konoha. Those connections withdrew after the massacre but begin returning as Sasuke’s reputation rises and Kaede’s suspected Uchiha identity becomes public 443 444.
