Background / History
Itachi was recognized as an exceptional prodigy from childhood. His father, Uchiha Fugaku, took him to witness battlefield killings at roughly age three or four, while Uchiha Shisui personally guided his training. He later entered ANBU, where Hatake Kakashi—already a jonin at age twelve—initially led him. Itachi eventually surpassed Kakashi after awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan. 11 202 205
Shisui's death awakened Itachi's Mangekyō Sharingan. Although rumors claimed he killed Shisui, later information indicates he awakened it by witnessing Shisui's death; Danzō had ambushed Shisui, stolen one of his eyes, and left him to die. Before dying, Shisui entrusted his remaining left Mangekyō Sharingan to Itachi and asked him to preserve both Konoha and the Uchiha name. 133 196 211
During the Uchiha Clan Massacre, Itachi slaughtered his clan while sparing Sasuke. The account presented in the Diary links the massacre to the clan's planned rebellion, Konoha's higher-ups—particularly Danzō—and the intervention of the man calling himself Uchiha Madara/Kenji. Itachi chose the village over the clan, accepted the role of villain, and intended for Sasuke to become Konoha's hero and revive the clan. 49 50 53 212 220
After defecting, Itachi joined Akatsuki with Kisame Hoshigaki as his partner. He remains under the organization's surveillance and initially lacks access to its deepest secrets, including the identity and abilities of its Rinnegan-wielding leader. Through the Diary, however, he later acquires extensive information regarding Pain, Nagato, the Six Paths of Pain, and Akatsuki's future operations. 11 45 243

Appearance
Itachi is identified by his prominent Sharingan and, as an Akatsuki member, a black cloak patterned with red clouds. He is later shown suffering blurred vision and physical decline from repeated Mangekyō use. His condition is identified as a Kekkei Genkai disease associated with awakening and using the Mangekyō at an unusually young age. 11 212 269
- Black hair and Sharingan eyes. 11
- Wears a straw hat while entering Konoha with Kisame. 11
- Uses Akatsuki's black-and-red-cloud cloak. 50
- His eyesight progressively worsens; he experiences temporary vision loss after Tsukuyomi. 45 215
- Takes medicine to treat his declining body and has become more proactive about prolonging his life for Sasuke and Konoha. 131
Personality
Itachi is exceptionally analytical, cautious, and information-driven. When observing Obito's Kamui, he immediately considers its limitations, the nature of its alternate space, escape routes, and how to exploit a possible time limit. 49 50
His loyalty to Konoha and devotion to Sasuke drive nearly all of his decisions. He distrusts Danzō, hates the man claiming to be Madara for his role in the Nine-Tails Rampage and clan tragedy, and continually plans safeguards for Sasuke. 45 50 113
He is also willing to manipulate Sasuke's life and emotions to secure his brother's future. This ruthlessness later causes him to question whether hatred was truly the right method for awakening Sasuke's power. 158 208
The Diary's revelations have broadened his outlook beyond Konoha's internal conflicts. He methodically records information on the Six Paths, the Sage Body, dōjutsu evolution, and the Ōtsutsuki Clan, while recognizing that the Shinobi World contains dangers far beyond the political darkness he once believed he understood. 293 309 340
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Itachi possesses the Uchiha Clan's Sharingan and an evolved Mangekyō Sharingan. His ocular power places him firmly at Kage level, though its repeated use strains his body and progressively damages his vision. 18 45 210
- His Mangekyō awakened after witnessing Shisui's death. 196
- Mangekyō overuse causes overload and eventual blindness. 16 210
- His early Mangekyō awakening contributed to a Kekkei Genkai disease that progressively breaks down his body. 269
- He can leave chakra within Sasuke's eyes to trigger a Transcription Seal. 50
- He planned for Sasuke to inherit his eyes and pursue the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. 53 212
- He received Shisui's remaining left Mangekyō Sharingan following Shisui's death. 133
Tsukuyomi
Tsukuyomi is Itachi's Mangekyō genjutsu, described as an extraordinarily powerful illusion technique capable of manipulating perceived time and space. Kakashi endured three days and nights of torture within it and was severely injured despite surviving. 16 57
- Can incapacitate an elite jōnin through eye contact. 16 208
- Its intensity exceeds ordinary genjutsu and may be amplified directly by the Mangekyō. 16
- Inflicts severe mental damage that ordinary medical treatment struggles to heal. 16
- Uses place a major burden on Itachi's body and vision. 16 215
Amaterasu
Itachi's Amaterasu is a Mangekyō technique that produces black flames and serves as his primary physical attack. 50 208
- Burned through the Great Toad's esophagus to escape Jiraiya's trap. 208
- Can be deployed through a Transcription Seal as a countermeasure against Obito. 50
- Used to intervene against Danzō when Sasuke was immobilized. 54
- It does not kill instantly, allowing prepared opponents opportunities to evade or substitute away. 219
- Its delayed lethality leaves a narrow opportunity for space-time techniques or Izanagi to negate a prepared countermeasure. 220
Susanoo and the Totsuka Blade
Itachi possesses Susanoo, though he deliberately withholds it during much of his battle with Sasuke. Its Totsuka Blade can seal targets into a dreamlike world. 217 220
- He manifests a complete, armored Susanoo powerful enough to contend with massive summoned creatures and Tailed Beast-scale threats. 216
- He uses the Totsuka Blade to extract Orochimaru's Yamata no Orochi form from Sasuke and seal Orochimaru permanently. 217
- His possession of Susanoo meant he could have ended his fight with Sasuke much earlier. 220
Kotoamatsukami Safeguard
Shisui's remaining Mangekyō eye contains Kotoamatsukami, a genjutsu capable of altering a target's will without their awareness. Itachi intends to use this power as a safeguard against Sasuke following the destructive path shown in the Diary. 59 131 133
- Shisui entrusted his remaining eye to Itachi before his death. 133
- Itachi considers leaving a Kotoamatsukami-based contingency to stop Sasuke from abandoning his comrades and becoming consumed by power. 59
Genjutsu Mastery
Itachi's pure genjutsu is regarded as top-tier in the Shinobi World; only Shisui is suggested as a possible rival. 95 221
- Can trap Sasuke in layered genjutsu, making an entire exchange appear real when neither combatant has physically moved. 210
- Uses genjutsu to simulate Sasuke's eye being gouged out. 213
- His illusions are considered vastly superior to Sasuke's by Danzō. 54
- His combat use of genjutsu combines deception, timing, and psychological pressure. 54 57
- His Sharingan genjutsu was potent enough to leave Deidara with lasting psychological trauma after Itachi recruited him into Akatsuki. 352
- His illusion mastery makes him an exceptional counter to Orochimaru, whose repeatedly divided soul is especially vulnerable to high-level genjutsu. 218
Uchiha Style Shurikenjutsu
Itachi demonstrates elite projectile skill supported by Sharingan perception. His exchanges with Sasuke surpass the conventional ceiling of shuriken training. 86 212
- Uses complex midair shuriken collisions and trajectories. 212
- Conceals a Shadow Clone during a projectile duel without observers noticing the hand seals. 212
- His skill reflects the Uchiha Clan's ability to track and predict projectile paths with the Sharingan. 86
Tactical Analysis
Itachi constantly studies enemy capabilities and develops counters rather than relying solely on raw ocular power. 45 49 50
- Deduced Orochimaru's Konoha Crush Plan from Diary information. 45
- Recorded and analyzed Obito's intangibility, dimensional transport, and modified body. 49 50
- Assumed Kamui had a duration limit and planned to exploit the gap. 49 50
- Recognized Danzō's Sharingan-covered arm as an Izanagi resource. 52
- Deliberately drained Sasuke's chakra and stamina to force Orochimaru's hidden contingency to emerge. 217
- Obtained critical intelligence on Pain, Nagato, and the distinct abilities of the Six Paths of Pain without needing to infiltrate Amegakure himself. 242 243
- Takes notes on Momoshiki's Byakugan, Rinnegan-based ninjutsu absorption, and other Ōtsutsuki abilities. 293 301
- Theorizes that the Ōtsutsuki arrived in the Shinobi World roughly a millennium ago and that the Uchiha, Senju, Uzumaki, and Hyūga descend from their lineage. 294
- Investigates the relationship between physical strength, the Sage Body, and the evolution of dōjutsu. 309 329
- Considers whether the absent Sage of Six Paths may be hiding from Ōtsutsuki Isshiki or engaged in a larger conflict with Hagoromo and Hamura. 340

Story Role / Major Arcs
Return to Konoha
Itachi returns to Konoha with Kisame under the stated objective of capturing Naruto, the Nine-Tails jinchūriki. His actions also serve to protect Sasuke and send a warning to Konoha's higher-ups. He defeats Kakashi with Tsukuyomi but deliberately does not kill him, then retreats after Might Guy intervenes. 11 16 17
Discovery of the Diary
After receiving the Diary, Itachi learns of Orochimaru's planned invasion of Konoha, Orochimaru's interest in Sasuke, and Kaede's Sharingan. Akatsuki surveillance prevents him from freely warning Konoha or acting openly. 45 46
Preparing Against Obito and Future Threats
Diary footage reveals Obito's Kamui and involvement in the Uchiha massacre. Itachi begins planning Transcription Seal-based Amaterasu countermeasures while studying Kamui's limits. He later learns of the Ōtsutsuki Clan and recognizes that Sasuke and Naruto may face enemies beyond conventional Kage-level threats. 49 50 109
Itachi later realizes that his original Amaterasu contingency is insufficient against an opponent who can evade through Kamui or rewrite events through Izanagi. He resolves to seek a more reliable means of preventing Sasuke from being manipulated by Kenji. 220
Sasuke's Future and the Brotherly Battle
Itachi watches Sasuke's future descent, Mangekyō awakening, and conflict with Danzō. He is relieved by Sasuke's growth but devastated by visions of Sasuke sacrificing Karin and abandoning his intended path. 53 57 59
During their future confrontation, Itachi fights Sasuke through genjutsu, shurikenjutsu, taijutsu, and ninjutsu while intentionally withholding decisive force. His true objective is to remove Orochimaru from Sasuke, pass on protection, and secure Sasuke's future rather than kill him. 208 212 217 220
The footage also forces Itachi to confront the failure of his method of cultivating Sasuke through hatred. He recognizes that Sasuke's emotional bonds and desire to protect others may have been a healthier route to developing the Sharingan. 208
Intelligence on Akatsuki and Pain
By witnessing Jiraiya's future investigation and death, Itachi gains information that would otherwise have required an extremely dangerous infiltration of Amegakure. He learns of Nagato's identity, the Six Paths of Pain, and the scale of Akatsuki's plan to gather the Tailed Beasts. 242 243 320
Ōtsutsuki Research
Itachi records and analyzes the future attacks of Kinshiki and Momoshiki, including Momoshiki's Byakugan, Rinnegan-based ninjutsu absorption, and pursuit of the Nine-Tails' chakra. He theorizes that the Ōtsutsuki's arrival predates the modern Shinobi World by roughly a thousand years and may explain the origins of the Uchiha, Senju, Uzumaki, and Hyūga clans. 293 294
His research expands to the Sage Body, Shikotsumyaku, the Tenseigan, and the apparent relationship between bodily power and ocular evolution. The possibility that Isshiki's threat has forced the Sage of Six Paths into hiding leaves Itachi convinced that the true depths of the Shinobi World's dangers remain unknown. 309 329 340
Three-Year Countdown
Itachi concludes that major events will begin in three years, when hidden forces such as Akatsuki, Kara, and the Ōtsutsuki may emerge. Though he recognizes his own impending doom, he sees the present as a limited period to prepare. 256
