Background / History

Naruto is the son of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. During the Nine-Tails Rampage, the Masked Man threatened him as a newborn while Kushina struggled to contain the Nine-Tails. The circumstances of the beast’s sealing and his parents’ sacrifice left Naruto orphaned and made him the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki. 169 179 180

He grows up without knowing his parents and struggles with the isolation of being an orphan. During a later meeting across parallel timelines, he tells Minato about the hardships he endured, sees Kushina’s photograph for the first time, and receives his father’s apology and recognition. 169

Naruto also travels to the past through Rōran’s Ryūmyaku, where he unknowingly fights beside Minato against Mukade. Minato ultimately realizes Naruto is his son but erases the memories of the encounter to preserve history. 140 141

During the Pain invasion, Minato appears within Naruto’s mental space and directly reveals that he is Naruto’s father. Naruto learns that Minato sealed half of the Nine-Tails’ chakra within him because he believed Naruto could master it and would need its strength against the masked enemy behind the Nine-Tails’ attack. 275

Despite early academic shortcomings—including being unable to perform the basic Clone Technique—Naruto remains determined to become Hokage. Jiraiya later judges that his defining talent is not conventional classroom aptitude, but endurance, refusal to surrender, and the ability to improve under adversity. 23 152 204

Naruto is identified as the reincarnation of Ōtsutsuki Ashura’s chakra, while Sasuke is identified with Ōtsutsuki Indra. Naruto nevertheless considers himself Uzumaki Naruto rather than a continuation of Ashura. 258 319

Personality

Naruto is initially frightened when facing Zabuza, but recovers his resolve, retrieves his headband, and declares his ambition to become Hokage. His courage surprises both his teammates and Kakashi. 23

He is consistently described as optimistic and passionate despite his upbringing. Kitahara Kaede attributes part of Naruto’s persistent cheerfulness to Asura’s influence, while others view his resilience as an inherited ideal from Jiraiya’s way of the ninja. 30 242

As an older shinobi, Naruto remains compassionate even toward enemies. After overwhelming Nagato’s Six Paths of Pain, he approaches Nagato with paper flowers as an offer of peace rather than executing him. 245

During the original Pain assault, Naruto refuses to simply kill Nagato even after Konoha’s destruction. He instead seeks to understand Nagato’s motives and the cycle of hatred that created him, reflecting Jiraiya’s teachings on peace. 276

As Seventh Hokage, Naruto is strict about genuine effort. He is angered when Boruto uses a Scientific Ninja Tool to imitate the Rasengan rather than learning the technique himself, though he also reflects on his own failures to devote enough time to his family. 290 291

Appearance

Naruto is identified by his resemblance to Minato Namikaze. A future version appearing in an IF Line is described as fifteen or sixteen years old and freshly returned from the Fourth Shinobi World War. 140 244

  • Has blond hair, as noted through his resemblance to Minato. 140
  • His Sage Mode primarily changes his pupils, unlike Jiraiya’s more pronounced toad-like transformation. 244
  • His future Seventh Hokage incarnation is depicted as a middle-aged adult. 187 244
  • During uncontrolled Nine-Tails transformations, ominous chakra surrounds him and his pupils take on beast-like characteristics before he loses himself completely to the tailed beast’s will. 274
  • Uzumaki Menma, his counterpart from an illusionary or mirror world, resembles Naruto but has black hair and features more closely resembling Minato. 254

Abilities & Skills

Immense Chakra Reserves

Naruto possesses extraordinary innate chakra reserves attributed to his Uzumaki bloodline, with the Nine-Tails providing an additional vast chakra source. 24 43

  • Can produce enormous numbers of shadow clones without exhausting himself. 24 43 83
  • His chakra is stated to be roughly one hundred times Kakashi’s. 43 60
  • Kaede’s chakra after obtaining the Initial Uzumaki Clan Sage Body is only three percent of Naruto’s. 59
  • Recovers chakra exceptionally quickly, including after releasing a shadow clone. 43 44
  • His immense reserves allow him to use battlefield-scale techniques, including the Wind Style: Ultra-Big Ball Rasenshuriken. 158 159

Multiple Shadow Clone Technique

Naruto’s signature early combat technique is the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique. 23 44

  • Uses clones to rescue Sasuke from Zabuza. 23
  • Uses clones alongside Wind Release during the Demon Brothers’ attack. 82
  • Teaches both the Shadow Clone and Multiple Shadow Clone techniques to Kaede as part of a technique exchange. 44
  • Uses shadow clones to gather and replenish Sage Art chakra, extending his Sage Mode’s practical duration. 270
  • As Hokage, frequently employs clones to manage village duties and attend obligations when his workload prevents him from being present in person. 290

Wind Release

Naruto’s chakra nature is Wind Release, which becomes the basis for his highest-output offensive techniques. 36 244

  • Trains in Wind Release: Great Breakthrough under Kaede. 44
  • Uses Wind Release techniques in practical battle against the Demon Brothers. 82
  • Develops Wind Style: Rasenshuriken from the Rasengan. 156 173
  • Employs Wind Style: Ultra-Big Ball Rasenshuriken against the Ten-Tails; its scale is described as capable of deciding a battlefield in one strike. 158 159
  • Later uses Rasenshuriken freely in his normal state, controlling its direction, range, and size with far greater precision than during its initial development. 332

Rasengan Variations

Naruto rapidly learns and expands upon the Rasengan, Minato’s technique. 152 173

  • Learns the standard Rasengan within one week. 152
  • Develops Wind Style: Rasenshuriken. 173
  • Uses a simple Rasengan to finish Deva Path Pain after disabling the other Paths. 245
  • His massive Rasenshuriken is said to surpass even Minato’s Rasengan in power. 158
  • Combines his Rasengan with Minato’s to create the Taikyoku Rasengan, which destroys Mukade’s giant puppet body. 140
  • Uses Shadow Clones, Rasengan, and tactical positioning to defeat Deva Path Pain in the original Pain assault. 276

Nine-Tails Chakra

Naruto is the jinchūriki of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, initially a closely guarded Konoha secret. 45 71

  • Can draw upon the Nine-Tails’ chakra through a Tailed Beast cloak. 157
  • Eventually forms a cooperative relationship with the Nine-Tails, Kurama, rather than treating it solely as a sealed weapon. 187 254 258
  • The Nine-Tails helps him resist genjutsu by using its chakra to disrupt external influence. 258
  • Enters Nine-Tails Chakra Mode during his IF Line battle with Pain. 244
  • Temporarily loses control during the Pain battle, transforming into a destructive tailed-beast state dominated by Kurama’s killing intent. 274
  • Forms a chakra Nine-Tails construct in cooperation with Kurama and can synchronize it with Sasuke’s Susanoo in combat. 296 297
  • Learns of Kurama’s Baryon Mode while investigating future threats to his children and the shinobi world. 286

Sage Mode and Six Paths Power

Naruto demonstrates exceptional aptitude for Sage Art, exceeding Jiraiya’s expectations. 188 244

  • Enters Sage Mode almost instantly. 244
  • Maintains a near-perfect transformation, with only subtle pupil changes. 244
  • Uses Six Paths Yang Power to stabilize Jiraiya’s life-threatening wounds. 244
  • Activates Six Paths Sage Mode after the Fourth Shinobi World War, reaching genuine Six Paths-level combat power. 244
  • This peak state is temporary; the Six Paths Yang Power is later reclaimed by the Sage of Six Paths. 244
  • Uses clones refining natural energy at Mount Myōboku to restore his Sage Art chakra in the middle of combat. 270
  • As Seventh Hokage, enters Sage Fox Mode by combining Sage Mode with Kurama’s chakra; this form represents his peak Super Kage-level state outside his temporary Six Paths power. 244 297 299
  • Creates a giant Nine-Tails-shaped chakra defense in Sage Mode to shield others from Ōtsutsuki Momoshiki’s attacks. 296

Taijutsu and Combat Adaptability

Naruto’s early taijutsu fundamentals are poor compared with Sasuke’s and Uzumaki Menma’s, but his battle instincts, tactical creativity, and later physical ability develop immensely. 24 254

  • Uses battlefield deception and a Fūma Shuriken transformation feint with Sasuke to free Kakashi from Zabuza’s Water Prison Technique. 24
  • Displays improved speed, reactions, and coordinated combat after Kaede’s training. 82
  • Fights beside Minato against Mukade despite exhaustion and severe chakra depletion. 140
  • In adulthood, fights Ōtsutsuki Momoshiki largely through taijutsu with Sasuke to avoid giving Momoshiki’s Rinnegan opportunities to absorb ninjutsu. 299

Talk no Jutsu

Naruto possesses an exceptional capacity to understand, influence, and reconcile with hostile opponents, commonly described as his “Talk no Jutsu.” 147 276

  • His refusal to abandon Sasuke and his ability to inspire others contribute to his reputation as a future Savior. 72 280
  • Chooses dialogue with Nagato after defeating Deva Path Pain, seeking to understand his enemy’s suffering rather than answer hatred with revenge. 276
  • Reaches mutual understanding with Kurama, enabling their eventual partnership and access to the Nine-Tails’ full cooperative chakra. 187 338

Relationships

  • Minato Namikaze — Father. Naruto later tells Minato about his difficult childhood; Minato apologizes and recognizes his son’s strength. 169 173 Naruto also unknowingly fights beside Minato in Rōran and later learns the truth of their relationship in his mental world during the Pain invasion. 140 141 275
  • Kushina Uzumaki — Mother. Naruto sees her photograph for the first time after meeting Minato across timelines; the future Seventh Hokage later saves her after the Nine-Tails is removed. 169 187
  • Hatake Kakashi — Team leader and teacher. Kakashi is impressed by Naruto’s courage, tactics, chakra capacity, and eventual growth. 23 24 270
  • Uchiha Sasuke — Teammate, rival, and future battlefield partner. They cooperate against Zabuza and later combine their attacks against the Ten-Tails. 24 156 159 As adults, they remain mutually reliant defenders of Konoha and synchronize Kurama’s chakra with Sasuke’s Susanoo against Momoshiki. 259 296 299
  • Jiraiya — Mentor. Jiraiya identifies Naruto as the Child of Prophecy and is saved by Naruto in an IF Line. 158 244 246
  • Nine-Tailed Demon Fox / Kurama — Sealed tailed beast and eventual ally. Their relationship develops into mutual cooperation. 187 254 Kurama supports Naruto’s resistance to genjutsu, fights alongside him through chakra manifestations, and encourages Naruto to give more attention to his family. 258 291 297
  • Kitahara Kaede — Trainer and technique-exchange partner. Naruto teaches him shadow clones in return for Wind Release training. 44
  • Nagato / Pain — Opponent Naruto defeats at Six Paths level; Naruto then offers reconciliation rather than revenge. 244 245 In the original Pain invasion, Naruto again seeks to understand Nagato’s motives after defeating Deva Path Pain. 276
  • Uzumaki Menma — Alternate Naruto encountered in an illusionary or mirror world; Menma wields Nine-Tails power and fights Naruto. 250 254
  • Uzumaki Boruto — Future son. Boruto initially resents Naruto’s absence and relies on a Scientific Ninja Tool to imitate the Rasengan, but still acts courageously to protect Naruto during Momoshiki’s attack. 290 291 293
  • Uzumaki Himawari — Future daughter. Naruto is troubled by diary revelations concerning her Byakugan, her possible future as Kurama’s jinchūriki, and the dangers facing his children. 286 321
  • Ōtsutsuki Momoshiki — Ōtsutsuki enemy who targets Naruto’s Nine-Tails chakra and attacks during the Chūnin Exams. Naruto protects Boruto and battles Momoshiki alongside Sasuke. 293 296 299

Story Role / Major Arcs

Land of Waves Mission

Naruto’s first major mission tests his resolve against Zabuza. He overcomes fear, uses shadow clones to protect Sasuke, and works with Sasuke’s Fūma Shuriken feint to free Kakashi from the Water Prison Technique. 23 24

Training and Growth

After trading techniques with Kaede, Naruto gains Wind Release instruction and becomes markedly more capable in real combat. His later mastery of the Rasengan and development of the Rasenshuriken establish Wind Release as his primary offensive specialty. 44 82 152 173

Savior of the Ninja World

Kaede’s diary repeatedly identifies Naruto as a future “Savior,” a claim initially doubted by Sasuke and Kakashi due to Naruto’s poor academy performance. As more future events are revealed, Naruto’s role becomes linked to the battle against the Ten-Tails and the wider threat of the Ōtsutsuki Clan. 30 72 159

Seventh Hokage and the Nine-Tails

A future Naruto appears as the Seventh Hokage, saves Minato and Kushina, restores them to peak condition, and removes the Nine-Tails from Kushina. The event reveals both his Hokage status and his harmonious partnership with the tailed beast. 187

IF Line: Saving Jiraiya and Defeating Pain

In an IF Line, teenage Naruto arrives in time to save Jiraiya from Pain, heals him with Six Paths Yang Power, enters Sage Mode instantly, and annihilates the Six Paths of Pain. He then offers Nagato peace, seeking to avoid the tragedies of the original timeline. 244 245

Pain’s Assault on Konoha

During Pain’s invasion of Konoha, Naruto returns to find the village devastated and confronts the Six Paths of Pain in Sage Mode. He uses Rasenshuriken, Shadow Clone-based Sage Art chakra replenishment, and his combat ingenuity to overcome several Paths. 266 270

The battle pushes Naruto into an uncontrolled Nine-Tails transformation, but Minato’s residual chakra appears within his seal and restores Naruto’s consciousness. Naruto subsequently defeats Deva Path Pain and seeks out Nagato to understand him rather than execute him. 274 275 276

Seventh Hokage and the Ōtsutsuki Threat

As Seventh Hokage, Naruto discovers Kaede’s diary and learns of threats beyond the Fourth Shinobi World War, including Ōtsutsuki Isshiki, Kawaki, and Boruto’s possible fate as an Ōtsutsuki. Recognizing that he and Sasuke are not invincible, he resolves to devote more time to training. 258 259 301

When Ōtsutsuki Momoshiki and Kinshiki interrupt the future Chūnin Exams to seize the Nine-Tails, Naruto protects Boruto and faces Momoshiki with Sasuke. Their cooperation includes Naruto’s Sage Mode defenses and the Nine-Tails-wrapped-in-Susanoo formation. 293 296 299

Trivia

  • Naruto’s chakra reserve is compared to an “inexhaustible battery” when the Nine-Tails’ chakra is included. 43
  • He is considered Konoha’s only strategic deterrent during a period when the village has lost many of its strongest shinobi. 71
  • Naruto’s future strength causes Minato to question his own standing as a Kage-level shinobi. 195
  • He struggles to obtain a jōnin-promotion recommendation letter because he is an orphan, unlike peers with family support. 250
  • Naruto’s inability to perform the basic Clone Technique as a child is attributed in part to the Nine-Tails’ chakra disrupting his chakra circulation, rather than an absence of talent. 30 308
  • Although the world regards the Seventh Hokage as overwhelmingly powerful, Boruto initially believes Naruto’s Hokage position was effectively bought and has little understanding of his father’s true strength. 283 296
