Background

The Sharingan is the Uchiha Clan's hereditary dōjutsu. It is distinct from merely possessing Uchiha blood: Kitahara Kaede first received a “standard Uchiha Clan bloodline,” then later awakened the Sharingan itself. The bloodline fusion more than doubled his Chakra reserves before the eye awakened. 2

An outsider may possess a transplanted Sharingan, as Hatake Kakashi does, but cannot awaken one independently without Uchiha blood. Non-Uchiha users also cannot normally deactivate the eye, creating a continual Chakra burden. 2 9

Kitahara Kaede awakened his Sharingan after witnessing Hyuga Keiko in immediate danger. Its activation substantially improved his eyesight, combat prediction, and Chakra growth; shortly afterward, his Chakra increased by roughly another thirty percent. 7 8

Although Kaede's awakening was initially attributed to exceptionally diluted Uchiha ancestry, he later identifies his Sharingan and related aptitude as products of the Lottery System rather than genuine Kitahara-family Uchiha lineage. The Kitahara Family is stated to have no actual Uchiha bloodline, making Kaede's Mangekyō awakening especially anomalous by ordinary standards. 2 223 388

Awakening a Kekkei Genkai typically causes a period of rapid bodily and Chakra growth as the user's body adapts to its newly manifested power. The chance of awakening the Sharingan is heavily influenced by bloodline purity: children born to two Sharingan users have a high likelihood of awakening it, while descendants with only highly diluted Uchiha blood almost never do. 98 333

Only a minority of Uchiha ever awaken the Sharingan, and Three-Tomoe users are rarer still. Reaching Three-Tomoe is considered sufficient to give its user at least Jonin-level potential, with particularly strong users capable of reaching Elite Jonin level. 428

Kaede's system-granted Uchiha bloodline allowed him to advance from awakening to Three-Tomoe in roughly a month. By the time Sasuke sought his guidance, Kaede judged his Three-Tomoe ocular power to be comparable to an ordinary Mangekyō Sharingan and greater than Kakashi's regressed Three-Tomoe state. 63 223

Later revelations identify the Sharingan as an evolved form of the Byakugan and place the Rinnegan as a further evolution beyond it. The Byakugan is described as the origin of eye-related Kekkei Genkai, while the Sharingan and Rinnegan represent successive transformations associated with Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo's lineage. 285 286

The Rinnegan's evolution is not automatic. The Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan is only a foundational condition, and the further requirement remains unidentified; Itachi speculates that pure Yin Release Chakra or another exceptional source of power may be involved. 397

Nagato's Rinnegan is later revealed not to have been a natural Uzumaki awakening. The eyes were most likely Madara's and were implanted into Nagato because his Uzumaki constitution could better endure their overwhelming burden, though even he became severely emaciated through their use. 397
